LOS NMEROS ORDINALES EN INGLS

Igual que que los hispanoparlantes, los angloparlantes utilizan los nmeros cardinales para contar y expresar medidas: Sin embargo, las secuencias de las cosas y las fracciones se expresan de otra forma: Decimos: El primero en llegar fui yo; t fuiste el segundo. Estos nmeros se llaman nmeros ordinales, porque se usan para indicar el orden (la secuencia) de las cosas. Igual que los hispanoparlantes, los angloparlantes utilizan los nmeros ordinales para indicar secuencias y fracciones: I was the first to arrive; you were the second. We are using the eleventh edition of this textbook. The board was three fourths of an inch thick. (3/4) They left me only one eighth of the estate (inheritance). (1/8) LOS DAS DEL MES

En cuanto a las fechas en espaol, pasa algo interesante. Decimos El primero de mayo (nmero ordinal) , pero el dos de mayo, el tres de mayo, el cuatro de mayo, etc. (nmeros cardinales).

En contraste, los angloparlantes utilizan los nmeros ordinales para expresar todos los das del mes. Dicen the first of May, the second of May, the third of May, the fourth of May, etc. sin excepcin, hasta el final del mes: the thirty-first of May. Es como decir, El primer da del mes, el segundo da del mes, el tercer da del mes, el cuarto da del mes, etc. hasta el trigsimo primer da del mes. De hecho, los nmeros ordinales se usan con gran frecuencia en el idioma ingls. Por eso es bueno dominar estos nmeros. Y , por suerte, es bastante sencillo.

Cuatro observaciones:

* Despus de first, second, third, todos los nmeros ordinales terminan en th.

* Toda y al final de un nmero se convierte en ieth para la lograr la forma ordinal: no slo twenty>twentieth, thirty>thirtieth, sino tambin forty>fortieth, fifty>fiftieth, sixty>sixtieth, seventy>seventieth, eighty>eightieth, ninety>ninetieth.

*Slo la ltima palabra se pone en forma ordinal: twentieth, pero twenty-first, twenty-second, twenty-third, twenty-fourth, twenty-fifth, twenty-sixth, twenty-seventh, twenty-eighth, twenty-ninth, y as sucesivamente, con todos los nmeros ordinales. * La ve de five y twelve se convierte en f para aadir th : fifth, twelfth.

Con practicar estas cuatro cosas, se puede dominar los nmeros ordinales en ingls.
