editorNew York, the city that never sleeps. But that doesn't stop it from being the Oz
millions come to looking for their dreams..or from being the urban jungle millions blame
{for their nightmares. I's a wondrous and wicked place, ripe and rotting all at the same
time ~ and init dichotomies itis both metaphor and partner to the man without fear,
Daredevil; its contradictions of raw violence and high society mirror its protector's
paradoxes of being both lawyer and vigilante, and its diverse and unique neighborhoods
cand locales (not just generic skyscrapers and city streets) provide the inspiration that fuel
Matt Murdock in his crusades for righteousness. They are tied together, the city and the
man, Daredevil a knight errant in red-and-horned armor pledged to redress the wrongs of
eight million plus men and women.
That's the dream, anyway. Or the nightmare. And the adventures about to take
Daredevil along are sure to be filled with both... ‘
‘A violent killing spree is rocking the city, the product of a deranged and mysterious
assassins’ competition between Tombstone, Taskmaster and a number of other killers-for-
hire. Complicating matters further is the Punisher, attracted tothe presence of so many
high-profile criminals in one place at one time; he's hoping to wrack up a body count of his
‘own, a solution Daredevil considers tantamount to putting out fire with gasoline. It's up to
the man without fear to defuse the situation, playing both sides against the other in deadly
game of predator and prey.
As the killers and the Punisher pass out of the picture, the reason for the foul
contest between the villains becomes clear ~ the Hand was coming to town, and the
various murderers were auditioning for that most exclusive league of assassins. The ninjas
have arrived at the behest of various Far Easter interests planning to move out of Hong

‘Kong in 1992 when that city passes over to Red China; these interests - both legal and
illicit — desire to relocate in New York and have employed the Hand to begin creating a
base of power for them (the businesses) to assume once they make the transition. The
assassin's ruthless spilling of innocent blood (as well as their worship of the mystical
Beast) draws the attention of the vengeful Ghost Rider, a force Daredevil finds himself
drawn into an uneasy alliance with in order to cleanse the city of the taint of the Hand.
Daredevil's fearless spirit and impressive fighting prowess against the dark league
of killers does not go unnoticed; it draws the attention of what remains of Stick's secret
Order of warriors, Stone and the long presumed dead Wing, Flame and Star. Weak and
secking to rebuild their numbers in order to once more stand against the Hand, they have
sought out the student Stick once spoke so highly of; for his part, Murdock is honored and
sorely tempted fo carry on the work of his venerable mentor. Believing this may bea
needed focus and direction in his life, Murdock trains at their side for a short while, but it
soon becomes clear it's an arrangement that won't work at this time; their presence reminds
‘Murdock too strongly of Elektra, the city around him is too much of a pull and a
distraction, and since losing Stick the Order itself has still to find its owncenter. In the
end, Murdock and the Order must part company, at Jeast until such a time as they have both
better defined themselves in their ways as wartiors.
In the meantime, the Kingpin and Typhoid Mary have been busy building the big
‘man's media empire in New York. Print, radio and tv scream garish headlines and yellow
‘journalism, foregoing the city's passions and humanity to play off its fears and bigotry and.
racism; needless to say, Fisk Entertainment is number one in sales and ratings. As the
Kingpin plays up the subway murder of a teenage tourist from the Midwest, Daredevil
becomes increasingly incensed -- not only at the racial tension the villain is sowing, but at
the injustice of the media focusing on the death of one teen from out of town (tragic as it
‘was) when three or more inner city kids died the same day; why should their deaths have
