1. Matter exists in 3 states ( solids, liquids and gases) 2. Matter can change from one state to another. 3.

A change in state of matter involves the absorption and release of heat. 4. The change in state of matter takes place through physical processes such as: - melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation, condensation and sublimation.

freezing sublimation sublimation melting Gas Boiling/evaporation Liquid Solid

condensation

The change in state of matter

a) Melting The process of changing a solid to a liquid Absorb of heat Example: Ice melts to become water b) Freezing The process of changing a liquid to a solid Release of heat Example: Water freezes to become ice

c) Boiling The process of changing a liquid to a gas Absorb of heat Example: Water boils to become steam d) Condensation The process of changing a gas to a liquid Release of heat Example: Steam condenses to become water

e) Evaporation The process of changing a liquid to a gas Absorb of heat Example: Water evaporates to become water vapour f) Sublimation The process of changing a solid to a gas / gas to a solid Absorb of heat (solid to a gas ) Release of heat (gas to a solid)

1.

When the thermometer is used to measure the temperature of the hot object, the mercury expands and the reading goes up. When it is used to measure the temperature of a cold object, the mercury contract and reading fall down.

2.

1. When the bimetallic strip is heated, it expands and bends towards the screw to complete the electrical circuit. 2. The bell will ring to sound the warning.
