1. INTRODUCTION This chapter presents the background of the study, problem and objective, its significance, and scope and limitation of the study. 1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Today, computer has become a part of life. It is evident that most of the countrys institutions still do not use the high technology. Particularly in pharmacies, daily transactions, inventories and record of sales are still done on paper. People know that modern pharmacies are now operating at great pace striving to serve as many customers as possible with the best of their abilities. But as the years goes by, the number of customers has grown and various cases arise that the manual method of managing customers transactions, inventories and updating sales, is no longer practical. In this study, researchers hope to develop a system that will minimize all works of manual methods, therefore allowing owners ease in updating inventory - a system that is fully automated, userfriendly, time effective and efficient. Owner knows that number of customers continually increase, managing a pharmacy can also become increasingly difficult, especially if everything is done manually. RAZOMED pharmacy is owned by Dra. Genevieve Razote. The drugstore is now exists for 4 years since April 21, 2007.

The researchers interviewed the owner of RAZOMED pharmacy. According to the owner, it is so hard to manage pharmacy using manual inventory process. The pharmacy uses the first in first out process, and every product is arranged by categories. Owner checks the daily sales. Staffs do inventories weekly and major inventories yearly. By weekly inventory, the staff will check the medicines which are not to sell like expired medicines. The staffs having a hard time in doing such inventories, sometimes it was overlook and miscount. The owner is not sure about the honesty of the staffs - the owner manages the sales but when compare with the sales inventory the stocks are not match. 1.2. STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVE 1.2.1. General Objective: The general objective of this study is to develop a computerized inventory system for RAZOMED pharmacy that will serve as proposal to help in managing the pharmacy easily and has less effort by updating the inventory automatically. 1.2.2. Specific Objective:

y Create a database of medicines and products using Visual Basic. y Make a system that allows to update the inventories automatically every purchase and order; y Develop a system that reminds the user about the stocks and expiration automated.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The system will benefit the following: y Owner The system will make it easier for the owner to manage the pharmacy and convenient when it comes to records. y Owners staff Staff can benefit a lot from this study, as they are an integral part of the whole management. y Customers Customers are the owners principal assets. And the reason why this study is conducted is to provide a solution to owners need to better serve their customers. y Researchers The researchers have developed their writing, analysis, and interpretation skills needed to make a good system. y Future Researchers This will benefit other researchers who wish to have similar studies as they can get background information from the result of this study which will serve as template to modify their research.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY Scope The system focuses on the following: y All records and files about stock and ordering are computerized and stored at the database. y The system has a secure log-in for owner and authorized staff. y Managing inventories is also integrated transactions. y Reminds the user about the stocks and expirations. y Update inventories in each order. y Changing users information can be edited. Limitation The boundaries of the study define as the following: y Only Authorized personnel will be allowed to use the system. y Changing users information can be edited by the administrator. y Only the administrator can delete items from the inventory list. y The system will not allow deleting of items unless it is expired or has null stock.

2. METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY We have learned lots of models that we can use in creating our proposed system. We decided to use the Prototype Model this methodology is a system development methodology in which a prototype is built, tested, and then reworked as necessary until an acceptable prototype is finally achieved from which the complete system or product can now be developed. And it is also an iterative, trialand-error process that takes place between developers and end users and it is feasible.

3. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE AND OUTPUT In the procedure of interviewing we already know when did the business start, and who is managing the business and how many employees does the owner has. As we stated in our outline the products that the business sell is more on medicines.
