Tutorial Sheet 6: Kinetics

1. The 100 kg beam BD is supported by two rods which have negligible mass. Determine the force created in each rod if at the instant when =30 the rods are both rotating with an angular velocity of =6 rad/s.

Answers: TB = TD = 1325 N

2.

The collar C is moving downward with an acceleration of 1 m/s2. At the instant shown, it has a speed of 2 m/s which gives links CB and AB an angular velocity of AB=CB=10 rad/s. Determine the angular accelerations of CB and AB at this instant. Perform calculations using vector notation. The bar AB can be assumed uniform and slender with a mass per unit length = 20 kg/m. The bar CB can be assumed massless. Ignoring the effects of gravity, calculate the shearing force on the frictionless pin at B. Note that the moment of inertia of a slender bar through its centroid is L2/12 and around one end is L2/3

Answers:

AB = 95 k rad/s2
F = 380 ( i + j) N

CB = 5 k rad/s2

3.

The spool shown has mass 8 kg and a radius of gyration kG = 0.35 m. If cords of negligible mass are wrapped around the inner hub and outer rim as shown, find the spools angular velocity 3 seconds after it is released from rest. (The equation for constant angular acceleration is =0+t).

100 N

G 0.2 0.5

Answer: after 3 seconds = 30.9 rad/s

4.

A mass M is attached to one end of a light cord which passes over fixed pulley A and under movable pulley B. Each of the pulleys has mass m and radius r and may be regarded as a uniform disk. Friction at the axle of pulley A can be ignored. When the system is released from rest, determine the acceleration of the mass M.

8M 4m g 8M + 7 m
