THEA234 LANA ROELANDTS 220032777 ASSIGNMENT ONE 2012

Lana Roelandts 220032777 THEA234 Assignment One 2012 Exegesis The first speech for this unit, the introduction of myself, was my attempt at communicating to the audience that although I am not entirely comfortable with the concept of public speaking to an audience, I am willing to give it a go and even make a joke at my own expense to help both myself and the viewer feel a bit more at ease, and to attempt to hold the viewers attention for the duration of the speech, as humorous language can be a useful device for gaining attention, maintaining attention , and building rapport with your audience. (McCarthy & Hatcher, 2002, p.95) I also attempted to appeal to the audience as an outgoing type of person who is easily approachable and easy to get along with, so that the speech does not appear too mechanical and dry. I also tried to achieve this by trying to maintain eye contact with the audience, though there were instances when looking at my notes was required. I practiced diction exercises such as tongue twisters in an attempt to improve my diction and enunciation of words; however I feel that my nervousness shone through and my enunciation faltered. Using basic language was to attempt to involve the audience in the conversation, as I felt that if they understood what I was talking about, they were more likely to be actively listening as they would feel that the speech was more relatable.
