To characterize the morphological traits of cotton hybrids and their parental lines using DUS guide lines

To develop the DNA fingerprints of selected hybrids and their parental lines of cotton using SSR markers.

To establish the distinct molecular IDs for each hybrid and their parental lines.

Morphological characterization
`

In the present study, 23 cotton cultivars were characterized morphologically based on guidelines given by National DUS testing. As per the DUS guidelines 21 characters prescribed for cotton were recorded. The qualitative and quantitative characters viz., leaf size, shape, colour, incision, pubescence, stem pigmentation, pubescence, stem color, petal color, petal spot, anther color, filament color, position of stigma, boll shape, bract type, number of serrations on bract, 50% flowering, days to maturity and plant height were recorded.

Each cultivar was pooled in to groups based on similarities of morphological characters which were recorded at appropriate stage of the crop and

The statistical analysis for quantitative characters is in process.

Molecular characterization
`

The molecular characterization by using DNA fingerprinting technique to identify polymorphism and to develop distinct molecular IDs for each variety, hybrid and its parents is in progress.

Isolation and quantification of DNA was done. The PCR amplification work was in progress.
