Its implied throughout the essay that humans often do not intend to lie, but we all do in various ways. We choose to make life easier by ignoring facts, confrontation, or potentially bad situations through a lie. A theme Ericsson focuses on is deciding when to lie. The trick of thought when telling a white lie is that you begin to think you know whats best for the person being lied to. She says, It is an act of subtle arrogance for anyone to decide what is best for someone else. (383). This essay also highlights situations that occur in everyday life. Omission is a lie that arouses from telling most of the truth but leaving out keys facts that change how the entire situation is perceived. Ericsson writes about the omission of Lilith from Genesis in The Bible as an example of omission. With this example, she explains that this little flaw of leaving Lilith out of the Bible changes how a woman is addressed as well as her competence to a man. Lies can changes peoples lives.
