Classification: Carbohydrate, hypertonic solution Mechanism of Action: Dextrose is used to describe the six-carbon sugar d-glucose, the principal form of carbohydrate used by the body. D50 is used in emergency care to treat hypoglycemia.

This drug was given to the patient because of her medicine induced hypoglycemia. Her blood glucose levels dropped to 40mg/dl at 12:00 midnight of December 2, 2011.

The patients CBG levels further decresed from 40mg/dl at 12:00 midnight to 20mg/dl at 3:00 am which led to the doctor to give the one vial of D5050. The response was evaluated after giving 2 more vials The patients CBG result increased to 250mg/dl at 6:00 am on December 02, 2011 from 20mg/dl at 3:00 of the same day. The patients CBG result increased to 122mg/dl at 12:40 pm on December 05, 2011 from 49mg/dl

NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES

Before Check the written medication order for completeness. It should include the drug name, dosage, frequency, and duration of the therapy. Check to see if there are any special circumstances surrounding administration of the dose to the patient. Be certain that you know the expected action, safe dosage range, special instructions for administration and adverse effects associated with drug orders. Prepare the necessary equipment. Prepare the dosage as ordered. Check the label on the medications three times before administering any drug. Never prepare a dosage of medication, which is discolored, has precipitated, and is contaminated or outdated.
