By Fritz Wenzel, President, Wenzel Strategies Research

Wenzel Strategies conducted a telephone survey of likely Republican primary election voters statewide in Nebraska, which will elect a new U.S. Senator later this year. The survey was conducted Feb. 17-19, 2012, and included 817 respondents. The margin of error for the poll is +/- 3.40 percentage points.

A statewide telephone survey of likely Republican Primary Election voters in Nebraska shows that state Attorney General Jon Bruning leads four competitors by a wide margin in the race for the Republican Party nomination for U.S. Senator. He wins 48% support in the five-way race, far outpacing his nearest competitor by nearly 30 percentage points overall. The more conservative the voter, the stronger the support for Bruning. Among self-identified moderate voters, he wins 40% support, while he wins 48% support among mainline conservatives and 50% among those conservatives who said they support the TEA Party movement. One in five likely voters 20% - said they were unsure for which candidate they would vote in the primary election. Brunings lead no doubt stems in part from his advantageous favorable rating, which is stronger than all other competitors. Nearly three out of every four likely voters 74% - said they have a favorable opinion of him, with 35% saying their opinion of Bruning is very favorable, the strongest favorable option available to respondents. Just 16% said their opinion of Bruning is unfavorable, while 10% said they didnt know enough about him to have formed an opinion.
