Topic: Thermometer

1. In making a mercury-in glass thermometer, a student uses melting ice and boiling water to calibrate it. It is found that the lengths of the mercury thread in melting ice and boiling water are 5 cm and 30 cm from the bulb respectively. Find,

a. The change of the length of the mercury thread when the change in temperature by 1oC. b. The length of the mercury thread from the bulb when the temperature is 75 oC.

c. The room temperature when the length of the mercury is 12 cm from the bulb.

2. A student uses a faulty thermometer with a uniform bore to measure the temperature of melting ice and boiling water. The readings are -2oC and 102oC respectively.

a. The thermometer is used to measure the temperature of the liquid with a real temperature of 70oC. What is the reading shown? b. What is the real temperature when the reading of the thermometer is 20 oC?
