Essential Question: Where do people get their traits, such as hair color and eye color? How did scientists discover how we inherit our traits? y Demonstrate how genes interact in pairs to express dominant or recessive traits. y Use Punnet squares to show how genes may pair during a genetic cross.
Weekly GLEs/SPIs: GLE 0707.4.4 Predict the probable appearance of offspring based on the genetic characteristics of the parents. GLE 0707.4.3 Explain the relationship among genes, chromosomes, and inherited traits. GLE 0707.Inq.3 Synthesize information to determine cause and effect relationships between evidence and explanations. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: MONDAY: BRING BOOK CLASSWORK: Brain Pop, Notes HOMEWORK: 1. Define heredity, recessive trait, dominant trait 2. Complete Brain Pop Quiz (reverse) 3. Read pg. 100-105; answer questions 4,5,6,7 TUESDAY: BRING BOOK CLASSWORK: Classroom trait inventory HOMEWORK: Complete unfinished trait graph at home WEDNESDAY: NO BOOK CLASSWORK: Research gender genetics in multiple organisms HOMEWORK: Create your lesson! Be ready to present your findings to your home group on Thursday. Every student should prepare at least one sheet of paper summarizing the facts they discovered during research. Presentations should include at least one visual (drawn picture, printed picture, concept map, venn diagram, table, etc.) THURSDAY: NO BOOK CLASSWORK: Students teach about the organisms on which they have became experts. HOMEWORK: STUDY FOR TEST TOMORROW & ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW. 1. Categorize each of the organisms in the activity by the trigger for their sex determination (environment, X:A ratio, or chromosome with sex-specific gene). 2. In which organisms were male and female karyotypes identical? What conclusion might be drawn about their common sex- determination trigger? 3. If you could have a six-week internship in a research lab learn- ing about the genetics of one of these seven organisms in greater detail, which organism would you want to study, and why? FRIDAY: CLASSWORK: REVIEW/TEST HOMEWORK: NONE

VOCABULARY: heredity recessive trait dominant trait gene
