CAPSTONE PROJECT Title: Motion Capture Positioning System Programming Client: Naval Postgraduate School Advisor: Kate Lockwood, Ph. D. O verview: The goal of the project was to create a way to create non-traditional GPS signals using a programming solution. They provided me with motion capture data that I must in turn convert to GPS signals. In essence, I was given distance measurements, and had to create a software solution that will relate those distance measurements to work with GPS. Description: The Naval Postgraduate School wanted to create a non traditional GPS autopilot. NPS needed to develop an indoor GPS solution for autonomous navigation. They wanted to make this so that they can test vehicles using this non-traditional GPS where regular GPS is normally not located i.e. where there is not satellite coverage of the area. They constructed indoor courses for rovers and quadrotors (see below) that can be navigated autonomously to test the solution. Using a Vicon Blade camera setup with sensors fixed to the vehicles, data streams were recorded into the system about the x, y, z, p, q, r positions of the vehicles. They needed a programming solution in which that data can be parsed, identified, and in an organized way sent back to the device

Deliverables: This project involved creating a software solution that was tailor made for their programs and could be incorporated for testing of vehicles. Future plans include expanding this to a variety of vehicles, including quadrotors where altitude must be taken into effect

Paul Disselhorst CST 401 Spring 2012 Cover Letter Some Person Dream Job Manager Dream Job Company Someday Street Anywhere, CA Dear Dream Job Manager, I am writing regarding the recent job opening of Motion Capture Programming at your company and believe I am fully qualified for the position. I earned my Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology with a concentration in Game Development in May 2013, and feel my work on my senior capstone project sets me apart from other applicants, and because of this I believe I can offer something unique to your company.

For my senior capstone project, I worked with the Naval Postgraduate School in programming a motion capture positioning system. My objective was to create a software solution that would allow them to translate motion capture data into traditional GPS signals. My exposure to motion capture equipment and software, as well as my work with programming the solution have given me a strong background with the subject.

For the project, I helped set up a testing environment for a small rover that was marked with motion capture IR dots, as well as numerous mounted IR cameras that recorded data via the Vicon Blade program. I ran experiments with distance and different

maneuvers,

and created a software solution that translated the data stream into a more

traditional GPS solution.

While my project focused mostly on the programming of a software solution, my exposure to motion capture systems has given me much insight into how they work and I feel I would be a very valuable employee for your company. Sincerely, Paul Disselhorst
