COURSE DESCRIPTION This is a combined 5 credit CTS course, comprised of 2 credits for Legal Studies 10 and 3 credits for Legal Studies 20. This course will enable students develop skills in decision making, problem solving, communicating and critical thinking; develop knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about the law; identify the rights granted and the responsibility imposed by the law; engage in critical analysis of legal issues; develop an appreciation of the individuals ability to influence the law; demonstrate a tolerance for opinions held by others; demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with others; develop the ability to recognize, avoid, and resolve problems with legal implications; develop an awareness of legal issues in other curricular areas; and investigate career options related to the law. UNITS OF STUDY Legal Studies 1010: Private Law Students explore workplace and consumer law with a focus on basic rights and responsibilities at a place of work and the legal aspects of buying, selling, and renting goods and services Legal Studies 1020: Public Law Students explore the legal relationship between the government and the citizen with an emphasis on criminal law. Legal Studies 2010: Family Law Students examine a broad range of legal issues relating to personal relationships. Legal Studies 2020: Employment Law Students learn about unions and collective bargaining, contracts of employment, employment insurance, workers compensation, and women in the workplace. Challenging issues and law-related careers are also considered. Legal Studies 2030: Environmental Law Students identify laws related to the environment and describe how new environmental information affects the law. Students also examine, through case studies, the role of groups and individuals in bringing about changes in environmental law.

MATERIALS/TEXT/FEES Basic supplies such as paper and pen; All About the Law: Exploring the Canadian Legal System (sixth edition) STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Give respect to all members of the class Regular attendance & punctuality Come prepared and ready to work; stay on task and use class time effectively Contribute to a positive learning environment Give your best effort ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Each module is worth 1 credit. It is possible to complete some modules and not others and receive less than your 5 credits; however, Legal Studies 1010 and 1020 must be completed in order to move on to the 20 level section of this course.
