1) The stock concentration of dye is 50 mg/mL. Calculate the necessary dilutions to make a 2mg/mL standard solution and a 12 mg/mL standard solution. All standard solutions must have a total volume of at least 8 mL. Make sure you think about whether you can actually measure the amounts you come up with, and remember you can have solutions that are larger than 8 mL.
2) A solution contains two dyes of unknown concentration. Dye number one has a molar extinction coefficient of 568 M-1cm-2 at 460 nm and 13 M-1cm-2 at 550 nm. Dye number two has a molar extinction coefficient of 37 M-1cm-2 at 460 nm and 70 M-1cm-2 at 550 nm. If the absorbance of the solution at 460 nm is 0.938, and the absorbance of the solution at 550 nm is 0.713, calculate the concentration of each dye.
