• By linguistic definition: Betterment
• Applied definition: Articulating every letter
from its articulation point and giving the
letter its rights and dues of
characteristics.

• Rights of the letters are its required


characteristics that never leave it.
• The dues of the letters are its presented
characteristics that are present in it some
of the time, and not present at other times.
i.e. the madd, idghaam
The obligation of Tajweed
• The proofs that the scholars bring to
show the obligation of Tajweed is that
Allah says in the Qur’an
• ‘And recite the Qur’an (aloud) in a (slow
and melodious) style
• (tarteela)’

• Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA): “at-Tarteel is
Tajweed of the letters and knowing
where to stop (correctly)”.[An-Nashr of
Ibn Al-Jazaree 209:1]
• And of the rights of reciting correctly is
reciting it the way it was revealed.
• Umm Salamah was asked about the recitation
of the Prophet (SAW) and she described it as a
recitation ‘clearly distinguished letter by
letter’. [Tirmidhi]

• Sa’eed bin Mansoor relates in his Sunan that a


man was reciting the Qur’an to Abdullah bin
Mas’ood and he recited “Innamas sadaqaatu
lil fuqara-i
ra wal masaakeen”, so Ibn mas’ood
said: “This was not how the Messenger of
Allah (SAW) recited it to me!” So the man
asked, “How did he read it to you oh Aba
Abdir-Rahman?” So he said “Lil Fuqaraaaa-I
raaaa
wal masaakeen”, he elongated the word
Fuqaraa and the knowledge of the different
lengths of elongation (mudood) is also from

• Lahn JALEE = MAJOR mistakes


• Lahn Khafee = Minor mistakes

• Lahn Jalee means to make a BIG mistake 
in the Quraan
• Lahn Khafee means to make a small
   mistake in The Holy Quran
Yes, it is like a driving test.
Make 1 MAJOR and you FAIL. FAIL
Minors are forgiven to a certain limit.
What is LAHN JALEE?
• Incorrect Makhraj or Sifaat (Not to
pronounce letters from the correct place of articulation
and their respective qualities)

• Addition (To add on letters to words)
• Omissions (To take off letters from words)
• Harakah with Sukoon and vice 
versa (To replace a Zabar, Zer or Pesh with a Jazam
and vice versa)
• Change the Harakah (To change the Zabar,
Zer or Pesh)

It is HARAM to make any of these MAJOR mistakes.


THE DIFFERENCE

• In the letters QAAF and kAAF there are 2


differences
• (1) Makhraj is different
• (2) Sifat (quality) is also different
THE DIFFERENCE

• In the letters TAA and tAA there is only 1


difference
• (1) Sifat (quality) is different
• The Makhraj is the same
What is LAHN KHAFEE?
• Full Mouth / Empty Mouth (To overlook
the rules of Tafkheem and Tarqeeq when reciting The
Name of Allah,
ah The Letter Raa’)

• Ghunnah (Not to adhere to the the rules of Izhaar,
Izhaar
Idghaam,
Idghaam Iqlaab,
Iqlaab Ikhfaa etc in their respective places)
• Madd (Prolongation) (Not to prolong / stretch a
letter when a MADD is present)

It is MAKROOH to make any of these MINOR mistakes.
