IGCSE Chemistry Sheet 1

Activity 1. Study the examples of mixtures below and classify them as homogeneous or heterogeneous. 1. Sponge cake 2. Cup of Coffee 3. Muesli 4. Scrambled egg 5. Wood 6. Pizza 7. Petrol 8. Brass 9. Clouds 2. For the heterogeneous mixtures, differentiate between the main phase and the particle type that is mixed into the main phase. 3. For the homogeneous mixtures, differentiate between the solute and the solvent in each case. Research Project 1. We often use mixtures in our homes. By law, manufacturers must print the ingredients of the mixtures on the containers. Identify six mixtures in your home. Select from body cleaning and beautifying products, food products in tins, frozen or in packets, wrapped sweets and chocolates, medicine and household cleaners. List the ingredients that each one contains and find out about these substances. Find answers to questions like: in phase phase do they normally exist, are they safe to use, do they affect the environment adversely, why are they added to the product? Record your results in a table. 2. Manufacturers add food additives and preservatives to food stuffs for preservation. This lengthens the shelf life of food and ensures that we do not get food poisoning when we eat their products. Research the preservatives that manufacturers use to preserve meat and fish. Also research the indigenous methods of preserving meat and fish. Then compare and contrast the manufacturers' preservation methods with the indigenous ways.
