Passive Components

CHIP RESISTORS:

As shown, the resistive layer is mounted on the surface. The desired length is obtained by changing the length of the resistive layer. The resistive layer is terminated by inner electrode. The resistive layer is protected from the environment using protective coating. End Contacts are used to shoulder the resistor on PCB. The typical resistance varies from 0.1 to several m .

CODEWORD 0402 0603 1206 LENGTH 40 mil 60 mil 120 mil WIDTH 20 mil 30 mil 60 mil

The standard size of resistor is 40/20 mil i.e. for the power value of 0.5 Watts.

CHIP CAPACITORS:
At RF, chip capacitors can be used in the form of single plate or multi-plate configuration as shown.

The multi-plate combination is used for higher capacitance at RF. The typical size of capacitor is 15/15 mil. It extends up to 420/425 mil depending upon the required capacitance. The capacitance range is from 0.1 pF to several F.

SURFACE MOUNTED INDUCTORS:
The most common form of surface mounted inductor at RF is the wire bound structure. But, when smaller circuit dimensions are required, then flat coil inductors are used that can be configured with the micro-strip transmission lines. The typical size of SMI is 60x30 mil upto 180x120 mil. The value of inductance is 1 nH to 1000 H. The flat coil configuration has two different structures: square and circular. The circular structure gives less resistance and therefore it is more useful in the circuit where selectivity or bandwidth is the prime requirement. Generally, the resistance offered by the circular coil is 10% less than the square coil. The drawbacks of flat coil configuration is that it gives less value of inductance.
