Identifying Quadric Surfaces

Matt Trzcinski January 13, 2012

DEFINITION A Quadric Surface is the graph of the equation Ax2 + By 2 + Cz 2 + Dxy + Exz + F yz + Gx + Hy + Iz + K = 0.

One Square: Parabolic Cylinder - Opens along missing variable axis. Two Square: Elliptic (Circular) Cylinder - Opens along missing variable axis. Two Square and One: Same sign: Elliptic (Circular) Cylinder - Open along missing variable axis. Makes a nose cone. Dierent sign: Hyperbolic Paraboloid - Saddle rests on positive square axis. Makes saddle or pringles chip. Three Square: All positive: Ellipsoid - Set equal to one to nd vertices. One Minus: Constant Equals Zero: Cone - Opens along signed variable. Constant Equals One: Hyperboloid of One Sheet - Opens along signed variable. Think of the constant as being a measure of how pinched the surface is. Two Minus: Hyperboloid of Two Sheets - Opens along signed variable.
