Chapter 7 Japan and The Koreas

Section 1 Part 1 Japan


Every year Japan has thousands of earthquakes. They also deal with tsunamis, huge sea waves caused by the effect of earthquakes under water. Japan is an archipelago, group of islands. Japan has little land, fertilizers, and modern machinery to produce high crop growth. They use intensive cultivation, growing crops on every available piece of land. Japan has a long history, their ancestry comes from many clans, groups of related families. After Japanese emperors began to decline in the 790s, military leaders called shoguns ruled from the 1100s to 1860s.

Section 1 Part 2 Japan


They were also owned by powerful landowning warriors called samurai. Japans democracy now is a constitutional monarchy, were there are still shoguns and samurai but have no real power. Four close related cities in Japan form a megalopolis, huge urban areas made up of several large cities and communities near them.

Section 2 The Two Koreas


A kingdom called the silla ruled the peninsula from A.C.E 668 to 935. After it many dynasties followed, ruling families. South Koreas coastal regions are largely affected by monsoons, seasonal winds that blow over Asia for a few months. North Koreas farms couldnt produce enough income to buy fertilizer leading to famine, food shortage.
