India-based telecommunications company Bharti Airtel is expanding into Sri Lanka with a January 12 launch of 2G and 3G services.

The company is investing $200m in the Sri Lankan operations. It has outsourced IT operations to IBM, while Huawei will roll out the networks. Bharti Telesoft, a part of the Bharti group, will offer valueadded services. Bharti Airtel will become the fifth cellular player in the country, competing with Telekom Malaysia's Dialog Telekom, Millicom International Cellular's Tigo, Hutchison Telecom's Hutch, and Sri Lanka Telecom's Mobitel. The company got a license to operate in Sri Lanka in early 2007 and appointed Amali Nanayakkara as the chief executive in October that year. It has recruited a large number of local people and about 20 people from Airtel India are also working there for the launch.
