Chapter I Background of the Study Considering the poor economic status of the country and the high cost of products in the market, many people cannot find ways to afford products that maintain the hospitability and cleanliness of their home. One of the products that help our home to become presentably clean and pleasant is the air freshener that enhances our homes good ambiance. Grass, a plant commonly found branched into fields and wastelands are considerably hundreds, or even thousands in number in the Philippines but some of them are commercially useless. Some of the species of grass are not edible for human and other animals. Other species are considered nuisance that covers the surface of land. These reasons gave the researchers an idea to utilize grass, which has pleasant smell, into air freshener. This study will help to determine the potential of Bermuda grass as an alternative source of air freshener. The results of the study can be a great help for Filipinos engaged in business, predominantly for people living in areas with abundant grass for they could be one of the major suppliers of this type of air freshener.

Statement of the Problem The researchers want to find out the potential of Bermuda grass extract as the main component of air freshener. Specifically, the researchers seek the answers to these questions: 1. Is there a difference among the different proportions of Bermuda grass extract in making a feasible air freshener? a. 10 ml. b. 15 ml. c. 20 ml.

2. How is the experimental air freshener feasible in terms of: a. odor b. texture c. rate of sublimation

Hypothesis

1.

There is no difference among the different proportions of Bermuda grass in making a possible air freshener.

2.

Bermuda grass is not a feasible main component in making a homemade air freshener.

Significance of the Study Grasses are scattered in fields and wastelands and it ends up as a waste. The purpose of this study is to have less expensive and alternative air freshener to minimize the waste accompanied by the grasses. The researchers air freshener is different with the commercialized one because it is environmental friendly. For the experiment, the researchers used the extract of Bermuda grass as the main component in making an air freshener. The researchers product can bring benefits to the community especially for some houses producing a lot of grass. Community with a lot of grass lessens wastes on land. As the producer and supplier of grass, they can be a big help to make their place clean, that results to be an attraction for the tourists for vacations. For some, they were able to make a simple but unique job accompanied by the grass. It is very beneficial to some prospective businessmen who can manufacture and introduce to others this unique air freshener for good investments and for the improvement of Philippines locality. Scope and Limitations

The Bermuda grass used in this study were gathered from the football field of Lourdes School of Mandaluyong. This study is focused on the feasibility of Bermuda grass as a main component in making an air freshener. Standard procedure was used in this study. It was done in varying amount of Bermuda grass extract namely 10 ml, 15ml, and 20ml. The product was evaluated in terms of odor, texture and rate of sublimation. These variables were rated using the following scales: Odor was rated into: 5-very aromatic, 4-aromatic, 3-odorless, 2-unpleasant, and 1-very unpleasant. Texture was rated into: 5-very refine, 4-refine, 3-smooth, 2-quite smooth, 1- rough. The rate of sublimation is observed on a daily basis and recorded on the researchers data table. The researchers conducted the experiment inside the Science Laboratory of Lourdes School of Mandaluyong. No chemical analysis was done in the research.

Definition of terms Air freshener - a product used to mitigate unpleasant odor Color - visual perception that enables one to differentiate otherwise identical objects Extraction - a process done by extracting the Bermuda grass to get the fluid like structure Homemade air freshener - an air freshener that is made from ones efforts Herbaceous - a part of plant valued for medicinal or savory qualities Odor - scent given off by the product Pounding - the process in which the Bermuda grass is being crushed to a powder or pulpy by beating Bermuda grass - a creeping grass often used for lawns and pastures Sublimation - a process of changing state of matter from solid to gas. Texture - the visual or tactile surface characteristics and appearance of the homemade air freshener
