Up For Debate:
Good vs. Great Fiction
Today you will work in small groups to come to a position on whether Sinclair Lewis’ story “Virga Vay
and Allan Cedar” or Anton Chekhov’s story “Lady With Lapdog” is “Great” fiction. Use elements of
fiction such as Narration, Plot, Language, Character/Characterization, Setting, Plot, and Theme to make
your argument. You should be clear about your criteria and give textual examples to support your claims.
You are welcome to compare and contrast the two stories as a means for making your case.
