The compact spare tire is designed to have 8 tread life of 3,000 miles (4 800 km) when used as described, Tire Changing Procedure WARNING: Failure to follow the Tire Changing Pro- ‘cedure may result In personal injury or demage to your Jeep vehicle, 1. Park on a firm, level surface well off the road to pro- vide ample work space. Place automatic transmis- ‘ion in Park or manual transmission in Reverse, and stop engine. Set parking brake fully and activate ‘hazard warning flasher. NOTE: f forced to raise the vehicle on loose or soft ground, @ strong, flat board will provide a better base forthe jack when raising WARNING: Do not atart engine with vehicle on a jack. Vehicles equipped with Trac-Lok axles can roll the vehi. le off the jack even with one wheel off the ground. 2. Place the jack under the spring pivot near the wheel to changed. Align the jack withthe axe so that the saddle of the jack is beneath the spring eye pivot end. Postion lug ‘wrench on jack to use as a handle. mi WARNING: Do not use 2 block under the jack that prevents it from rising at least 3 inches before contac- ting vehicle. Attempting to raise the vehicle with the Jack completely collapsed can cause the jack 10 fall. & F Jack 6, Raise vehicle by tuming ug wrench/jack handle clockwise Until fre clears the ground, NOTE: When changing a flat tre, you must rise the vahiole high enough to permit instalation of the spare tre, which when inflated wil have & higher diameter WARNING: Do not work under vehicle without a jack stand supporting it. The jack is for changing wheets on- 1y. Check the vehicle stability after the vehicle Is raised. Passengers should not remain in vehicle. 7, Remove wheel nuts and wheel 8, Position spare wheeliti on vehicle and install wheel nuts with cone-shaped end toward wheel. Tighten huts clockwise until uniformly snug, using @ criss: ‘cross pattern, 42 NOTE: The lug wrench can serve as a lever to assist lit- ting the tire. Position the flat end of lug wrench beneath the whee! hub and roll the tire up on the lug wrench, Hold the tire with one hand while raising the lug wrench. Guide the tire onto the wheel studs. 9. Lower vehicle only until tire touches ground, by turn- ing lug wrench/jack handle conterclockwise. 40, Tighten wheel nuts securely in crisscross pattem with 60 {oot-pounds (108.5 Newton meters) orque. 11, Lower vehicle fully and remove jack assembly. 12. Install wheel cover securely, starting directly over vale lem, and remove wheel blocks. 18, Secure jack, lug wrench and tire at storage locations, Emergency Starting Procedures CAUTION: Jeep vehicles should not be started by ‘pushing or towing. In the event of battery failure, use jumper cables for starting a vehicle with a weak or run- down battery. In the event the engine turns over but Goesn't start during pushing or towing, raw fue! could ‘enter the catalytic converter. Once the engine is started, the raw fuel could cause the catalytic converter to overheat and rupture. Jump Starting WARNING: Do got attempt to charge or use # booster (on a battery with frozen electrolyte. Procedure 1, Place automatic transmission in Neutral or Park and set parking brake fully. 2, Turn off lights, heater, and all other electrical loads. 3, Remove rings, metal watch bands, and other metal jewelry and wear eye protection. 4, Make sure fender or body of other vehicle is not in contact with your vehicle, WARNING: Do not expose battery to open flames or sparks (including cigarettes, cigars and pipes). The battory produces hydrogen gas, which is flammable, explosive, and present within the Dartery at al times. Do not allow battery aotd to ‘contact eyes, skin, fabrics or painted surfaces. Serious per- ‘sonal injuty or property damage could result. Flush any con- tected area with water immediately and thoroughly Becareful when using metal tools and equipment near the Battery. Con- tact between tie postive terminal or metal in contact with i) ‘andany other metal on the vehicle could cause an injurious or damaging short circult. Always keep batteries and battery ‘0d out ofthe reach of children Jumper Cable Arrangement '5, Raise vent caps from discharged battery with a flat, nonmetal tool and remove the caps. 6. Cheek fluid level, If low, fluld must be brought to proper level before jump starting is attempted. 7. Check fluid condition. If slushy or frozen, do not ‘attempt jump starting. The battery could rupture or ‘explode. Battery must be brought up to 40°F (4.4°C) before it can be safely jump-started or charged. 8. Install vent caps on discharged battery vent wells. ‘A relief valve In the cap prevents pressure buildup. 8, Connact a jumper cable between the positive posts of the two batteries. The positive post may be iden- tified by a “++” sign on the post and the letters “POS” embossed on the battery cover adjacent to the battery post. 410. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the ‘egative terminal of the battery in the other vehicle. ‘The negative terminal has “NEG” embossed adja- ccent to the terminal. Do not connect the other end Of the jumper cablo to the negative terminal of the discharged battery. Connect to a bolt or nut on the engine. Do not connect the jumper to the carbur tor, air cleaner or fuel line, Keep the cables clear of belts and pulleys. 11, Start the engine in the vehicle providing the jump start, Let it run a few minutes, then start your engine. 12, Remove end of nogative jumper cable from your engine first and then other end of the samme cable. Remove the positive cable. Towing Disabled Vehicle If your vehicle is disabled and is to be towed with the front or rear wheels off the ground, towing speed should be limited to 30'mph (48 km/h) for a distance no greater than 15 miles (24 km). Manual Transmission NOTE: When towing vehicle over 200 mites (300 km), stop towing every 200 miles (300 km). With the transfer 145 ‘case still in N (Neutral) and transmission in gear, start ‘engine and rev engine for about one minute to circulate ll inthe transfor case, Ignition Key Available: tum ignition Key to Off position to Unlock steering. Shift transmission into gear and transter case Into (Neutral). Vehicle can now be towed with all four wheels ‘onthe ground or wth front or rear wheels raised. Besure park- Ing brake is released. Ignition Key Not Avallable and Vehicle is Unlocked: shift ‘fansmission into gear and transter case into N (Neutral) and ‘ow vehicle with front wheels raised. Be sure parking brake is released, Ignition Key Not Available and Vehicle is Locked:place doly Under rear wheels and tow vehicle with front end raised. Or, Aisconnect rear propeller shaft at rear axle yoke after marking the propeller shaft and yoko for proper alignment at reas- sambly. Secure shaft to underside of vehicle, and tow with front end raisod. Be sure parking breke is released. Automatic Transmission NOTE: When towing vehicle over 200 miles (300 km), stop towing every 200 miles (300 km) and with the transter case still in N (Neutral), start engine, place automatic transmission in D (Drive), and rev engine for about one minute to circulate oll in the transfer case. Ignition Key Available: tum ignition key to Off postion to unlock steering column and gearshift selector linkage. Move ‘earshit lever to P (Park) and transfer case shift lever to N (Neutra). Be sure parking brake is released. Ignition Key Not Available: place dolly under rear wheels and. tow vehicle with front end raised. Or, disconnect rear propeller shat at rear axle yoke (index mark for correct assembly later), secure shaft to underside of vehicle, anc tow wit front wheels raised. Be sure parking brake is released.
