Meaning and Truth


Lecturer: Assoc. Prof. Aneta Karageorgieva Requirements: 1 final paper up to 2000 words (due on July 1st), Discussions Wednesdays 15-17, room 518, Block 4: March 2, 16, 23, April 6, 20, May 4, 25, June 8. The remaining weeks are reading weeks. Main topics

1. Philosophy of language as a theory of meaning. The relationship between meaning and truth.
The meaning of meaning (H. P. Grice).

2. The picture theory of meaning: Wittgenstein and his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus.


3. Another version of realistic semantics: Alfred Tarski. 4. The holistic theory of meaning: W. v. O. Quine.

5. Intentionalist semantics: H. P. Grice, Logic and Conversation. 6. Pragmatist semantics: J.Austin, J. Searle and the theory of speech acts.
7. Truth and Meaning in an anti-realist perspective: D. Davidson.
