CROCHETED BEAR (Shown on page 9) Materials needed: Patterns on page 16; any brand of acrylic four-ply worsted-weight yarn—6 ounces of pale blue and 60 yards of ppale yellow; crochet hook, size G; one pair of large oval plastic eyes (see shopping in- formation on page 58), 20mm movable round plastic ayes, or scraps of white and black felt; ‘one 25mm plastic animal nose; scraps of black and yellow felt; fabric crafting glue, or threads to match felt pieces and hand sew ing needle; polyester stuffing; yarn needle. Finished size: Bear stands about 17 inches tall and sits 11 1/2 inches high. Gauge: 4 sis = 1 Inch. Always check gauge before starting project, ‘Note: This project as shown is unsuitable for children urider the age of 3—parts can be pulled off and accidentally swallowed. The plastic nose and eyes can be replaced with {elt ones if desired, and folt pieces can be ‘sewn in place rather than glued to make the toy safer. Thread needle with ‘inch end and sew ear to bear's head. Make ‘and attach second ear in same manner. MUZZLE With yellow yarn, ch 4. SIstin fourth ch from hook to join, forming a ring. Curve trunk: The 10-inch end of start- ing chain should be on inside of trunk. Pull this end, causing trunk to curve. Shape trunk ‘and when desired shape is reached, tack this ‘end to inside of trunk, holding trunk in posi- tion withthe other hand as you stitch, Thread needle with 1éinch end and use it to sew trunk to front of elephant’s head. Sew both loops of first 7 sts, back loops of next 8 sts ‘and both loops of last 7 sts to attach trunk to head. Finishing: Glue or sew eyes in place. Cut felt pieces according to patterns, and {glue or sew in place. See photo for place- ment. Gray yarn and @ whipstitch can be used to attach inner ears and pink tummy. ‘A large blanket stitch can be used around toanails. See color photo.
