ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

1. What is measured by the Peak flow meter?

Peak flow meter measures the Peak Expiratory Flow Rate, which is the highest speed that you
can blow air out of the lungs after taking in as big a breath as possible. It indicates the airflow
speed in liters per minute.

2. Give some uses of the peak flow meter?

The peak flow meter is used to detect changes in your peak flow. Changes in the peak flow will
tell you what is happening w/ your lungs, how quickly it is occurring, and how severe the change
is…

3. What is the significance of the PEFR?

The PEFR is helpful in distinguishing between constrictive (TB, silicosis) and obstructive
(asthma) lung disease. In asymptomatic cases, it may be the only means of diagnosis. It can also
point out specific trigger factors for asthma and can help judge the response to medication.
