ATP, Cellular Respiration, and Photosynthesis

Mr. Rosenberg

How cells get Energy

Animals must consume glucose and other foods

Plants must produce glucose during photosynthesis in the chloroplast

Transforming Energy

Once a plant or animal cell acquires glucose, it must transform that into cellular energy ATP!

ATP

ATP Adenosine TriPhosphate Provides energy to cells Made my adding Phosphate to ADP

+ Phosphate

ADP

ATP!!!

-Phosphate

Respiration

Cells need oxygen to make ATP Both plant and animal cells need that oxygen

Two Kinds of Respiration

Anaerobic Respiration

Occurs in the Cytoplasm Energy is produced without oxygen Produces 2 ATP molecules

Two Kinds of Respiration

Aerobic Respiration

Occurs in the Mitochondria Energy is produced with oxygen Produces 36 ATP molecules

Anaerobic vs. Aerobic

Aerobic Respiration is much more efficient

Respiration Example

In exercise what is the response of your body when you are gasping for your breath?

Your body wants to slow down Your cells need more oxygen to produce more ATP

Photosynthesis
Water + Carbon Dioxide Glucose + Oxygen

H2O + CO2 C6H12O6 + O2

Respiration
Glucose + Oxygen Water + Carbon Dioxide

C6H12O6 + O2 H2O + CO2
