TechLore Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

by Larry Dillon October 27, 2006 12:15 PM Posted in: Televisions and Projectors

Many of the later model Sony TVs have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it. The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again. Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article. Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open). Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective. One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits. Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672. Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505 Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly. Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206. Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits. Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board. Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is 12 or -13 (negitive). Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board. Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes. Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure.. IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

Discussion:
adjam on November 10, 2006 3:55 AM hi, might be I'm missing something, but would greatly appreciate a bit more info. I have a kf 42sx300 which was repaired last year and I saw this diagnostic screen so I know the tele has it. However, the buttons you describe that need pressing do not appear on my remote, specifically 'display' and 'channel'. Are they known by another name in the user guide? thanx Rich8988 on December 2, 2006 8:23 AM

Hi, I have a KP-FX432M91 which 10 blinks. What it mean? Please help... Thanks prakash.subedi on January 6, 2007 8:35 PM How do I check for C515, C516 or jungle IC, IC206? Larry Dillon on January 6, 2007 11:47 PM Your going to need the right test equipment my friend. An ESR capacitor type checker is first. If your not a tech and have no solid state repair experience, play it safe and call out a pro to assist you in this type of repair. If you do not know how to check capacitors, no insult my friend but a TV set is no place to be experiementing around inside of. Good Luck and let us know how you made out. prakash.subedi on January 13, 2007 7:16 PM Made some progress, thank you. I went to Radio Shack and got some hints on capacitors and how to replace them (Being a computer scientist took some courage). If ESR capacitor type checker is too expensive; it might be worthwhile just to go ahead and replace these capacitors, seems. My only problem is that I need hints on where to find these capacitors on the circuit boards; there are about six boards. Will appreciate any additional hints. prakash.subedi on January 13, 2007 7:18 PM By the way, could home insects such as cockroaches that get inside the TV cause capacitors to go bad? Larry Dillon on January 17, 2007 2:52 AM Roaches can cause all sorts of problems in a solid state TV set. (EEEWWWWW) DavidT on January 18, 2007 9:01 AM I have a Sony KP57WS500 and the light blink 5 times, what should I do? I can here sound and see black screen. Any advice will help.......... Thanks! Larry Dillon on January 18, 2007 9:18 AM Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the Cboard, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly. This repair is not one that should be attempted by the end user as there are no user replaceable parts inside this set. This repair will need speacial test equipment, unless the problem is the indicated adjustment. Good Luck and let us know how you made out with this repair. DavidT on January 18, 2007 9:27 AM Larry, What do you mean by checking video out Q705,732,761. Is that a fuses or picture tubes. How do I know is that parts is bad any clues will help Larry Dillon on January 18, 2007 9:38 AM You would need to have a VOM and know how to check the transistors with it. Your going to really need a schematic, locate those parts and go from there. First though try thr adjustment. And sorry my friend if your not sure what that is, my advice would be to call in a pro to assist you in this repair, as this set has alot of high voltage inside them even when the plug is not plugged in. Your also going to need to know how to solder and unsolder on a printed circuit and solid state equipment. abeldo on January 21, 2007 2:04 PM Hi, i have the KDL-40V2000, whenever i turn it on the picture and sound switches on then off for a few times until it completely turns itself off. The red light would then blink a total of 11 times after every 2 second period. What does this mean? Larry Dillon on January 21, 2007 10:47 PM abeldo, . I am assuming you have the Sony KDL-40V2000 Television.

This is a UK model. This could be a problem in the backlight circuit or bad capacitors in the main power supply circuit. My best

advice on a set such as this, would be to contact your local Sony repair depot to assist you in this repair. Good luck and let us know what you decided

jacktumprime on February 1, 2007 12:31 AM I have a Sony kp-57hw40. the television does not seem to be turning on, but the standby light blinks 6 times between pauses. The set was taken to get fixed but because of certain circumstances was not and some wires remained unconnected. I I found most of the cords homes on the circuit board where 2 sets of blue green and red wire sets go, but I have one connection that I cannot find a set of wires to connect to it. It looks like the label on the circuit board says " l K Check". The connection point is highlighted in the image supplied. Please let me know what should be connected here as I cannot find any wires that remain unconnected. Also, does it seem that this is the cause of the tv's disfunction? Any help is appreciated. Stevedel on February 5, 2007 2:10 PM I think my first message got lost somewhere! My 18 month old Sony KV-32CS70 has stopped and blinks 13or 14 times. Any ideas? Larry Dillon on February 5, 2007 3:21 PM jacktumprime, There is nothing connected to this plug. It is only a test location. It is there for a service tech to see if the set is in highvoltage shutdown or if the set had no picture but had sound, you could measure the video 1k line and see if that is why the video was muted. The

socket should be marked CN8023, and this board is called the D board. This is an RA-6 chassis and is a good set. I am wondering why the set was not repaired. Was it in an authorized Sony repair shop. If not you should find an authorized shop and get this puppy looked at. Good Luck, and let us know what you had to do to get this TV set working. jacktumprime on February 5, 2007 8:01 PM Larry Dillon, might you give me a little advice as to what MAY be the problem. I only ask so I have a heads up for when I take it in because the last guy I took it to tried to tell me that the D board I had didn't even go to my television. Here are the exact symptoms: When plugged in, (1) I hear 4 clicks about half a second apart (pressing the power button after the initial plugging in also produces the clicks), (2) see the standby light blink 6 times each iteration, and (3) no signs of ANY video or audio. Thanks a lot. Larry Dillon on February 6, 2007 8:08 AM Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206. This means that somrthing is holding down the horizontal oscillator and not letting it start up. You could have a short in just about anything in the horizontal sweep circuit, or the sweep power supply. Have you had this Tv anywhere else then the shop you had ir=t in? I wonder why they said thats not the right board? I just hope they did not pull a switcher rro on you. i once seen a shop that did that to a customer.

jacktumprime on February 10, 2007 1:27 AM I have decided to make an attempt to repair the set myself because I know I will be charged as much as possible if I take it to someone in my hometown and I really do not have money for that, so either I'll be able to fix it or its off to the junk yard. Do you have any hints as to how to find where a short would have occurred; will a circuit tester do the job? Or can it be visual? Also, might you know what the purpose of this white substance in the image is; either it came on the board originally or the guy I took it into put it there (possibly a marker for where the short is?). The first thing I am going to do is replace the sweep power supply though. I really do appreciate the help.

Larry Dillon on February 10, 2007 5:56 PM I do not know why that stuff is on the board. it could be silicon? Do you have a service manual or do you know how to read a schematic diagram? jacktumprime on February 11, 2007 4:47 AM No, however I was just planning on purchasing one from someone on eBay. Larry Dillon on February 11, 2007 7:36 AM Give me your email addy I have a service manual I can share with you. I have to send the file Via Pando as it is a large file. if you do not have Pando extraction tool you can get it for free on line. jacktumprime on February 11, 2007 2:49 PM Hey thanks a LOT! Yeah i have pando. xxicedropxx@aol.com prakash.subedi on February 11, 2007 6:55 PM I am in the same situation as jacktumprime. Where can I get a copy of the service manual. Is it available on the internet or library? Larry Dillon on February 11, 2007 9:14 PM Prakash, subedi, if you have the same Model numberand have Pando. Its yours for free. Post your E-mail addy and I will send it via Pando. prakash.subedi on February 13, 2007 8:37 PM I can be prepared with Pando. The model I have is KP-53HS10. Thanks, Larry Dillon on February 13, 2007 9:19 PM What is your email address dude prakash.subedi on February 13, 2007 10:00 PM psubedi1@hotmail.com - thanks Larry Dillon on February 13, 2007 10:27 PM It is on its way. kurto1 on February 16, 2007 3:18 PM Would anyone be able to fire off a service manual to my e-mail for the sony KP-57HW40... it would be greatly appreciated. killkenny911@homail.com

Larry Dillon on February 16, 2007 6:02 PM I may be able to get my hands on a 51HW40 and thats the exact chassis as the one you have so the circuitry should be just about the same. Ask again in a day or so. I will have it then. dans_repair_service on February 16, 2007 7:07 PM The service manual for the 57hw40 and the 51hw40 are the same. I'll forward to Larry. Dan Larry Dillon on February 16, 2007 7:41 PM I am getting one Dan Thanks kurto1 on February 16, 2007 8:10 PM Ok.... thanks a lot. jacktumprime on February 19, 2007 4:43 PM I need some advice with the d board: as you know I am trying to repair a KP-57hw40. In order to make for a quick fix, instead of trying to find where the problem is on the d board (already known the d board is the problem) I am going to order a new complete d board. However, the only place I can find it at is selling it for over $400. Doing a little browsing, I found a d board for the KP-57WS500 for almost 1/4 that price. I am pretty sure these are the same d board as they carry the same sony part #, so would there be any problems if I purchased the cheaper one instead of the one listed for my model? Also, if I can use the cheaper alternative, are there any other sets that use the exact same d board? Maybe I can find an even cheaper alternative. Larry Dillon on February 19, 2007 4:58 PM If it has the exact same part number, should not be a problem. DakotaFox on February 24, 2007 4:29 PM Hello, I have a Sony KV-32v42. The picture has started to collapse to the top of the screen then fold over "backwards" occupying about the upper 2 inches of the screen. It will usualy stay this way for about 30 seconds to a minute then the screen will go dark. When it does show a picture it is usualy not for any longer than a minute. Usually immediately before and during collapse the picture will show what appear to be retrace lines. It started to die about a week ago. At first if I powered it off and on it would stay on. Now it doesn't seem to matter if I cycle the power or not sometimes it comes on and dies as described above or it doesn't display any picture at all. The sound works fine throughout the entire picture drop out and even when the picture doesn't respond at all the sound will work good. It doesn't seem to be displaying any usable code. When I turn the set on, the TV clicks, there is a buzzing hum noise for about 0.1 seconds, and then the picture will come on. (The TV has always made this buzzing hum noise immediately after turn on, it lasts about as long as it takes you to say the word "thrum", I had assumed that it was the degausing coil being activated.) The red standby light blinks at approximately 1 hz until there is the sound of a relay click then the picture comes on. When the picture drops out it does not start any blinking cycle. I have noticed that the light will blink until the second relay click, sometimes that doesn't occur, I have waited for over a minute (counted seventy regularly spaced blinks) before I cycled power again. I have tried whacking it with power on as an easy search for cold solder joints. It didn't seem to make any difference. I am an Electronic Technician but I am not in the consumer electronics field. I don't regularly work with CRTs but I am familiar with high voltage circuitry and safety precautions that should be taken with it. If you suggest particular components to check please let me know where I can get ahold of a component placement diagram or drawing so I can find them. I would like to fix it myself if possible because: the nearest SONY repair shop is over 100 miles away and the local TV shop doesn't work on SONYs; our TV cabinet is designed for a 32 inch 4:3 aspect ratio TV; and with the signal off of the satellite system the picture doesn't seem to be much different than the HD TV's until you slide up close enough to see the pixels. 1K to 2K dollars seems like an awfuld lot to spend for a new TV that Doesn't seem to show a whole lot better picture than I had been receiving. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your time. DakotaFox on February 24, 2007 4:29 PM Hello, I have a Sony KV-32v42. Larry Dillon on February 24, 2007 4:46 PM It sounds like you may have a vertical output IC going bad or a capacitor in the vertical wave shapping circuit going bad. I can assist you with a training manual and or a RA-3 chassis manual if you like as I will e-mail it to you via Pando because these are large files. Just conferm the chassis Number and leave an e-mail addy and I will forward the service manuals to you. Let us know how this repair turns out and Good Luck. DakotaFox on February 26, 2007 9:11 PM Thank You, As Soon As I can find a couple of guys to help me drag this behemoth out of it's hole I will get the back off of it and see wha the chassis number is. I put a little 13" That has no remote (Gasp!) in front of the Sony and used the Sony for remote sound control. My wife cycled power once after it had been on for a couple of days. The Picture came up. I had read a thread where a guy had a different model Sony that he had to keep powered on or it would take up to 36 hours to allow the picture to come up. I told this to my wife, now she won't let me shut it down to get the back off. It's tucked in a very tight spot so I can't get the back off until I get it out of it's hole and to do this I need to unhook it. Picture looks as good as it ever did. It has 3 picture modes, Vivid, Movie and Normal. I programmed one of the modes to be as dark as I could get the picture and use this as the "off" time setting. I'll get the info to you as soon as I can. Thank you Very Much! Dakota jacktumprime on March 6, 2007 11:29 PM Larry Dillon, I'd like to thank you for all your help, most people probably wouldn't have provided the advice you did for me free. My set has come back to life after I replaced the d board with one from a KP-57WS500. After I took a closer look, the part number for the d board from this set and from my KP-57HW47 are different sony part numbers, but the parts looked identical at a glance. So, to pass on some advice to anyone who has my set (KP-57HW40) and needs a new complete d board (which costs ~$400.99), the cheaper d board for a KP-57WS500 / KP-46WT500 / KP-51WS500 / KP-65WS500 (~$140) works just fine. bluesurf on March 7, 2007 10:59 PM nothing to see here jacktumprime on March 8, 2007 4:42 PM I do have one last question: After replacing the d board, are there any adjustments anywhere else I need to make? I ask because the red blue and green are off, making it look like those 3d pictures you are supposed to wear 3d glasses for, but without the glasses. Larry Dillon on March 8, 2007 10:40 PM Sound like you may have a convergence problem my friend. And thank you so much for the compliment! Glad we could assist you. jcsstar on March 9, 2007 10:34 AM I have a Sony Model KV-27FS200. I recently replaced the flyback transformer which brought it from dead to where I now have a picture however the picture is GREEN. It is blinking 5 times. I tried to pull up the diagnostics screen but the TV starts up with a picture but shuts off after approximately 5 seconds. If I change the channel the video comes back and all the channels are displayed. I am not an electronics technician and do not really have any diagnostic devices so if I need to check something out, I will probably go and buy it and just replace it. Currently I have spent $27 versus an estimated repair of over $200. I still have a little money to spend. I would appreciate any advice. cmontalvocarlos on March 9, 2007 5:41 PM i have a continuous blink once a second no pausing. What part do i need to repair this problem? on your chart it says ik video path is defected. what does that mean? Larry Dillon on March 9, 2007 6:51 PM That means that the video IC is not putting out a video pulse to the 1k video line. it may have a shorted componet along the line, the video ic could be shorted or a short in the video circuit somewhere. Almost anything in the video circuit can cause this. Some times there are small capacitors that can cause this problem but not one in paticular that I know of goes bad. This set is going to need to be diagnosed with the proper service manual as well as the proper test equipment. Sorry no quick fix here. Please call in a pro to assit you in this repair. Good Luck and let us know how you made out with this repair. Flo on March 14, 2007 11:41 AM I got a question, Is the light engine box on the sony kp57ws500 separable for service? if so please tell me how. Larry Dillon on March 14, 2007 2:10 PM There is no light engine on the Sony KP57WS500. That set uses Picture tubes. What type of problems are you experiencing?

Flo on March 14, 2007 10:49 PM I am trying to get the tv to a service tech, without moving the entire tv, so i can take out the bad blue picture tube. I need to send it out to be refurbished. Larry Dillon on March 15, 2007 12:24 PM Sorry to inform you but you can take out the blue tube and install a new one in the home BUT there will be several alighnments that need to be done to this set after the tube is replaced. You will need a service manual to perform these because of the on screen seervice menu. I have the service manual and will send you a copy if you want it, but I send it through a proggy called pando because of the size of this service manual. You can get Pando for free at www.pando.com Flo on March 16, 2007 9:27 AM If i can do it myself that'll be much better ( don't have any experience fixing tv's though). I wouldn't mind if you send me a copy of the service manual. You can send it to gunnerz09@yahoo.com, i'll appreciate it. leoglenn on March 21, 2007 12:20 PM Larry, I have the same problem that jacktumprime had with my Sony KP-57HW40...(6 blinks associated with 4 clicks). I've been following the posts and its clear to me that I need to replace the d board. Could you please send me a copy of the service manual. I also agree with jacktumprime about your helpfullness and professionalism. Anyone else would expect to get paid for the time and advice that you offer. And yes, I have already downloaded Pando. Here is my e-mail: leoglenn@tejaslabs.net Thanks again. Larry Dillon on March 21, 2007 12:22 PM Sure will, a copy should be on its way to you soon and thanks alot for the compliment. let us know how you make out with this repair. Good Luck leoglenn on March 22, 2007 11:15 AM Thanks Larry. I received the manual. However, unlike jacktumprime, I'm going to get a little ambitious and try to repair the d board myself (instead of just buying a new one). Partly due to financial issues (unfortunately I was just laid off from my job) and partly due to the fact that I'd like to learn more about electronics and how to better use an OVM. I'm fortunate enough to own a very good OVM that was purchased for me from a previous job (I was working in the residential construction industry). I'm also fortunate enough to have the time since I'm currently unemployed. You mentioned previously to jacktumprime to check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206. I assume these are located on the d board. Also, are these voltage regulators or resistors (or neither). In addition, any information on what settings I need to have the OVM set to to check these parts, and what kind of reading i'm looking for (or possibly a good web-site to verse me on how to properly use an OVM) would be greatly appreciated. Larry Dillon on March 22, 2007 11:20 AM OVM? You talking about a digital multimeter? A VOM? leoglenn on March 22, 2007 11:34 AM Yes, thats what I'm talking about. leoglenn on March 23, 2007 8:15 AM Yes, Sorry to show my ignorance. When I refered to OVM, I meant a digital multimeter. Can you give me any advice on what circuits I need to be testing? You mentioned to jacktumprime to check the C515 & C516 and the jungle IC, IC 206. Are these located on the D board? leoglenn on March 23, 2007 8:58 AM Am I asking too much????? vipalidan100 on March 25, 2007 5:32 PM Hello. I just recently aquired a Sony KV-34hs510 . Problem its having is the six blinks when pluging it in the outlet. I've seen the info in reguards to Checking C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206. Thing is, I took the cover off last night to take a look inside. I decided to plug it in with the cover off and for some strange reason it started workiing allowing me to watch tv and dvd's all last night. I try to turn it on this morning and the same original problem comes back with the six blinks. Might anyone have any input on this? Larry Dillon on March 25, 2007 10:42 PM sorry about the delay leoglenn, Using a multimeter is not something I can explain here as there are tons and tons of info on using a multimeter. You will need to learn what AC and DC circuits are, what resistance is, how to read or look at a resistor and know the value by the colors on them. This is certainly not somnething you will learn overnight or even in a month or so. I have been in the electronic repair biz for a long long time and I had to learn how to use all of the tesy equipment myself. Ok forst off, you really cannot get a reliable reading or a test for a capacitor with a digital meter unless there is a built in ESR meter. leoglenn on March 26, 2007 8:43 AM I understand. I've actually done some research and figured out what I needed to know as far as using the multmeter. There was a part on the D board called the FBT Assy/NX4006 that was fried. This part alone was $70, so I decided just to go ahead and order the entire D board ($140) since I could not be for sure if any other circuits were fried. I'll let you know what happens as soon as I get the new D board in. I do have one other question regarding the high voltage cables. One of the high voltage cables that went into the FBT Assy was damaged. I cut the damaged part off, re-stripped it and soldered a generic connector tip that I purchased from Radio Shack. The specifications on the generic connector are as follows:

contact resistance: 0.0025 ohm / max. current per circuit: 20 amps / max. voltage per circuit: 250 volts / voltage drop: 2.5mV at 1A Is this connector going to be adequate for this application? Larry Dillon on March 26, 2007 9:09 AM Should be and good luck leoglenn on March 26, 2007 12:54 PM The D-board actually arrived this morining, and its already installed. The TV works great after the auto focus adjustment, however I am getting some slight distortion accompanied by wavy green lines at the top left corner of the screen. It is only in the top left corner and not all the way across. Do you have any idea what this could be. I'm sure it's an adjustment but I cannot figure out what adjustment it is. The service manual basically gives instructions on all adjustment but it doesn't give specifics for my paticular problem. kuchiram on March 26, 2007 8:12 PM Hi Larry, I have a Sony TV KP-57HW40 and week back I have red spark on the tv and tv switched off and it started blinking 5 times. When I try to switch on the tv it comes with full blue screen with lines and immediately switches off and 5 blinks continues. I called Sony service center and they told me the blue CRT tube is bad and requires to replace and they do not have the part. I found the part online before I order the part I went through your post and found that I need the service manual to aline. Can you please send me the manual? I found this Discussion very helpful. When facing TV, left tube not lighting is this the CRT needs a replacement? Is this one blue tube? Can I go a head order the part? Thanks, Ramana Larry Dillon on March 28, 2007 7:56 PM Ok it could not be lighting for many reason. First swap out the board at the end of the green tube right next to it and see if it lights. If the tube does not light switch the HI voltage lead on the high voltahe spitter to see and make sure that the problem is not there. Afyer all the swaps, and the tube will not light still, Yes I would say the tube is defective. pmp816 on April 2, 2007 3:10 AM Hi, I am posting to see if someone could tell me what the self diagnosis I got from my TV means, in not so technical terms. This is what it reads: 2: +B OCP 0 3: +B OVP 0 4: VSTOP 0 5: AKB 1 9: ZCD 1 10: 9VON 0 101: WDT 2 Serial: 1

Model: 8 3 5 Is this problem an easy fix, or should I just get a new television? leoglenn on April 2, 2007 6:56 PM ok Rick Hinds on April 2, 2007 8:44 PM I have a Sony Model #KV-32FS320 FD Trinitron Wega and I am getting 9 blinks. Does this mean that the switching regulator has gone south? If so what is the average cost to have this replaced? The set will from time to time turn back on, but then once it is turned on, it's back to the self timer blinking its 9 blinks. I have even unplugged the set for a period of time in hopes that it was just an error caused by inadvertently hitting the wrong button(s) on the remote, (supposedly according to the owner's manual unplugging the set will reset some of the codes) but to no avail. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. double_u 8 on April 11, 2007 9:42 AM I have a KV-27S42 and am getting the THREE Blinks---B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672. I am not sure what this means or where to check. I am not affraid to crack the case and get after it, but just dont know where to start with this. Any advise? lgnicolas on April 11, 2007 10:48 PM We have a KV-27S26 Sony Trinitron. When we try to turn it on, the standby light keeps blinking 1 second apart. The screen is blank, but with sound. I saw that when that light blinks this way that there's a problem with the jungle IC or the IK video. The thing is, once in a while, after repeated turning it on and off, we could make the set work. Sometimes, when the video comes on, after a few second it will will turn gray then video out. Then sometimes, the video will come on for a few second, then the picture will only be displayed at the upper half portion of the screen (reversed) then video will go out again. What's even weird, sometimes, after that repeated on/off sequence, the set will turn on and will work great for hours (even days if we leave it on) until we turn off the unit. Then it's back to that same problem. Does this problem makes any sense to anybody? This TV was manufactured back in 1997 and I'm still debating if it's worth sending to the repair shop. If anybody has any idea, please let me know. Thanks! bstair on April 11, 2007 11:40 PM I have a kp51hw40 and it's showing a green screen and then shutting off and showing 8 blinks. Is this really only an audio problem? Any idea on where to get parts and repar? mpaul13 on April 27, 2007 6:01 PM Larry, at the risk of sounding very dumb, I need to ask you the following: on my kp57hw40 i am trying to put in in diagnostic mode per your instructions. question1: do i start with the TV on or off? question2: when you say, in the sequence, to press Channel, is it Ch+ or Ch-? question3: is there a way to get a standard picture on the screen to see if the colors are what they should be? Many thanks, Paul jacktumprime on April 28, 2007 1:24 PM Hello again, unfortunately I am back. I was surprised with a not so great present on my birthday. While watching my newly fixed kp-57hw40 last night, the screen began flickering while getting very fuzy and making a lound "sizzling sound" (not sure if the sound was coming from inside the set or through the speakers, or both). Within 3 secs, the set powered itself down, but the standby light remained blinking. When I pressed the power, it powered back on momentarily, but the problems starting reoccurring so I turned it back off. I am hoping that I simply had the set on for too long as I was using it for various things nearly all day and all night. I come to you now to see if there is a known cause for this, and what [if any] special measures I should take before powering the set pack on to test it. Thanks jacktumprime on April 29, 2007 9:23 PM Ok, I turned it back on today with the back cover off and literally saw flames coming from what I believe is the flyback transformer on the D board (see image). I know I can get a new one to replace it with for pretty cheap, but will that fix the problem, or is it possible for something else to be causeing the small flames which come from under this part?

pnjkimbro on May 4, 2007 3:52 PM Okay, I have a sony kp51ws520 and it gives me nine blinks, I was above and saw what it might be, okay, now what? I bought this thing from a consumer depot and they just laugh at me. What exactly is this part and where can I get it? I can't afford eight hundred dollars to tix it. I just paid six for it. fleance on May 7, 2007 4:06 AM First off I just want to comment that this is an amazingly informative thread. That being said I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on my 53XBR300. I recently finished remodeling and tried turnning the box on after sitting dormant for probably 9 mo. or a year. I had it connected to a PS3 via Vido 5 and was having some video flicker which I attributed to the good old sync issues that I've had since I bought it. However instead of just between scene transitions it started happening across all inputs and giving me the 5 (AKB) blinks. The screen is on for a coule of seconds, and off for a few. When it's on the picture is perfect, if I use the auto-focus button it stays on for the entire process and works fine but after it completes the box goes back to on again, off again. Not exactly sure what is meant by 'turning up screen slightly.' Is this done via the service menu or physical adjustment? If it turns out it's possible failure I reckon I'm handy enough with a meter to investigate if I had access to the service manual. <wink Larry> Thanks, -/todd fleance @ comcast.net grin_and_tonic on May 7, 2007 11:55 AM Sony KP-53HS10 continuously flashing light. What is the general verdict for: "Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective." If the cost for repairs in this direction is over a fer hundred dollars, I will try to fix it myself. I would scapt the set if I couldn't, so I have nothing to loose. Larry, do you happen to have a service manual for this set that you would be willing to send me? Thanks! dcosta <at> hsc <dot> usf <dot> edu Larry Dillon on May 7, 2007 12:45 PM jacktumprime, That part is called the flyback transformer and yes it is probably the problem. I have seen this part shoot out flames may many times. Good Luck with this repair and just be careful, and let us know how you make out with this repair. Larry Dillon on May 7, 2007 12:49 PM pnjkimbro, your problem could be the G board is bad, but only a good diagnoises will determine that. The G board is no longer available from sony but is it available fro PTS electronics and the phone number is 1-8---844-7871 and the sony part number is A1054-157-A. if you have no TV repair experience, play it safe and call out a pro to assist you in this repair, Good Luck and keep us informed about this repair and if you got the set working. Larry Dillon on May 7, 2007 1:01 PM fleance, Thank you for those kind words. You problem is that one or more of the picture tubes are probably going bad. You might be able to turn up the screen or turn them down, depending on what is going bad in the tube. The screen controls are located in the front behind the speaker grill and then there is another small wooden cover you have to remove several screws to get to. There are going to be six controls on a small square. Three of these will say focus, and three of them will say screen. It is the screen controls you might want to try and adjust. One is for the red, one is for the green and one is for the blue. Be fore you try and adjust these controls you will want to put on a black & white picture like from a TV show or a DVD. The idea thing is a test DVD. You then want to adjust these controls down (counterclock wise just a tad, but balance them out for the best possible black and white picture. If it does not work try the controls the other way. If this does not help you, you will need to have the set serviced by a Sony repair depot. One very important thing is DO NOT TOUCH anything else inside this TV set while it is one if you do not know what it does. Also if you get the picture to stop flashing, you may want to take off the screen and while looking into each tube lens, rock the focus controls back and forth till you get the best focus on each tube. And while your in there lightly wipe off the mirrors and the lenses but be careful not to scratch them. Good Luck with this TV set and let us know how you make out. Larry Dillon on May 7, 2007 1:11 PM Grin__and_tonic, I mailed you a copy of the service manual you requested. I hope you can get this set going. You could have dries up capacitors or a video drive problem on the video board. Good Luck with this repair and let us know how you made out with this repair.

I have a KP-43HT20 and it's driving me nuts. I got the dreaded 6 blinks and read the info above, however I cannot find the caps (515,516) nor the Jungle IC (found the jungle) IC 206. Is it possible that these are numbered differently on my model? Maybe Im blind... They shouldn't be on the lamp boards, or the AV out board. that leaves 3 (G, D, A, I think) the PS (G), the one with H CONT on it (D)and another with the Jungle on it (A). My plan was to extract the board and take the parts and board in to be repaired. Or even buy a replacement board. I just can't seem to find those components on any of them. If someone could tell me which board they are definately on and or where to look for a replacement board I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your time. I had a service tech come out and while he was here he visited the Sony website to get the error code and suggested fix from Sony being the D6301 diode on the "G" board. His boss wanted $250 to replace the diode. I coughed up a hairball. He checked the diode and wasn't sure it was faulty or bad. He also felt bad his boss is so greedy. As he was not certain that replacing the diode would actually fix the problem, what do you think? I would be willing to replace the whole "G" board if I have to. How do I get a part number for this board so I can replace it? Larry Dillon on July 6, 2007 9:18 AM gotbaggz, it sounds like you may have two diodes that are bad on the G board. Replace the G board or replace the diodes, D6301 part number is 6-500-567-21, and the D6116 part number is 8-719-081-97 and are available at http://www.partstore.com or a local Sony parts distributor should have these common diodes Good Luck and let us know if this helps you out. Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking selfdiagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206. This means that the horizontal sweep circuit quit working for some reason and needs to have the sweep circuit diagnosed. If you know how to troubleshoot solid state electronics, you should acquire the service manual and diagnose the circuit. If you do not, play it safe and call out a pro to assist you in this repair. It is possible that you replace the wrong G board as there is a G1 and a G2 board. Are you absolutely sure of the blinking light? You will need to go into the set to take a few voltage measurements before replacing any more boards. By the way the response I left you is not for this type of TV set. Sony has started to use the same blinking codes on the newer technologies in TV sets as they did in the older Sony TV sets. I am in the process of upgrading these codes

to the newer TV sets. cmaxwell4 on July 6, 2007 10:20 AM We replaced the G1 Board based on the recommendation on page 8 of the service manaual: Low B Error = 6 blinks = Probably Cause is No "DD 6V" output (G1 board) We will check into it further. If we replace the G2 and that is indeed the problem, should the set automatically come on or is there some type of reset that will need to be performed? Thanks, Tom chadgt on July 6, 2007 12:03 PM Hello. Unfortunately my trusted 7 year old Wega KV-32FS16, BA5 chassis, manuf July 2000 decided to take a dive the other night. We had left it on and went upstairs for awhile and when we came back down, the screen had changed to a blue screen with horizontal/slightly diagonal lines on it with the tv show picture as a ghost image, sound working fine, but standby light flashing 5 times and repeating. Changing channels/vid inputs sometimes brought picture back momentarily, however it immediately was flashing red colors and then would fade to all red before turning to the blue screen with the horizontal lines with a slight diagonal to them as well as the center lines had a slight hourglass effect to them. Flipping to blank inputs for vid 1-4 would just give the blue screen/lines. Also noticed the viewable picture shrank about 1/21" all around viewable front 4 sides. Turning off and on sometimes helped, but again not for long, and sometimes there was a wierd squeak and electrical snap sound. After some cursing and stuff, got on web and ended up here among other places. Found a couple posts elsewhere on web mentioning checking T501 and Q502 solder joints on A-board. Pulled tv apart and looked at things. I did find these solder joints and they appeared ok, but I'm no electronics expert. I tried poking/pushing with a stiff rubber hose at certain parts/boards with tv on and there didn't appear to be any obvious changes. Can any of you experts help me out here? Probable causes? More things to check? Am I going to need to take to a repair place? Any ideas on repair cost? Anyone know any good ones in Reading, PA area? We really like this tv and didn't have any plans of replacing it any time soon. Of course the irony of it all was we were in Circuit City the previous night just walking through tv section and mentioned we would only consider getting something new if ours broke. As well, I just self installed 2 other Comcast cable boxes on 2 other tv's in house the same day. Talk about bad coincidence. BTW, I have moved this tv out of the way and moved our 27" from upstairs in its place and all works fine, so not a cable problem at all. Please help. TIA. Many thanks Larry Dillon on July 7, 2007 10:12 AM smee204, no the sets are designed to work with these protection circuits. Your problem is an over current protection condition. The problem you have is with the CRT drive circuit or the piture tube itself. There just is no way to stop this from shutting down till you have the problem in the set repaired. Good Luck smee204 on July 7, 2007 10:23 AM ok thanks. Any ideas what could be wrong or how to fix it or where to start looking. Thank you gotbaggz on July 9, 2007 12:20 PM hi i have a kp46wt520 with 9 blinks i was told it was 2 diodes, but when i opened it up and was looking closely i found black corrosion on a part which spread to the circuit board. the only #s legible in front iof it is the last two 03 it is on the board next to the board where power comes in. is that the g board. i would like to replace the whole board but i cant find it. even sony doesnt make it anymore which is weird because i purchased the tv 3 yrs ago hasnt been that long. Also does anyone have a repair manual they would be willing to email me? gotbaggz@hotmail.com thanks this is a very helpful forum. chadgt on July 10, 2007 11:26 AM Larry, any insight on my issue with my 7 year old KV32FS16 with the blue screen with horizontal lines and 5 blinking standby lights? I decided to pull the back off again last night and look at the various things you have noted for 5 blinks "Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the Cboard, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly." Now, is this info only applicable to newer machines, or possibly not mine? The reason I ask is that I could find no transistors numbered as the six you noted above. On my C board (actually CA board, the board at end of CRT) I only have Q700 and Q701. On my A board, I only found Q501, 505, 601, 602, 605, 609, 616, with unfortunately nothing obvious as to damage/burned connection/etc. I found the CA board on the end of CRT on partstore for $9, which seems amazingly cheap for a whole board, is this something one could simply swap if questionable? Also, I did bring up the fault screen which showed "5:011", which I assume is fault code 5 eleven times. I just figured I'd get some opinions from you, and if help me fine, if not, I plan on calling some repair places tomorrow to see what to do as we want our tv back. Thanks,Chad jeep461 on July 10, 2007 10:54 PM I have a Sony KP51WS520. Nine Blink codes. I have a sevice warranty with Sears. The repair guy came out and said it had a "chort" he ordered a D sub board. This finally came in 3 weeks later and he came out to repair it. He plugged the new board on and the same nine blink codes. He fumbled around for another hour and a half and said he could not save my TV. He said my dog had urinated on the front corner of the TV and "chorted" the other board out and they do not replace that board because it will erase the EPROM and all there will be is nothing. His tools were a flashlight and a screw driver. I asked him to show me where and it was on a outside soild structure of wood. Well I then got excuses of humidity, moisture etc. Should I replace the diodes or wait and fight it out with Sears. Without it and the other blogs and posts I would have never been able to have decent information to fight with Sears. I downloaded the manual and referenced the pg for flash codes and the g-board. Even though it is PITA I will fight with Sears. The Tech they sent could not speak english or write it. (proficiently) It would be a lot easier to just replace the board myself. I was not aware of the Sears service issues until I had a problem. Seems this is their normal text book proceedure not just for TV's but all of their appliances. I would rather change the whole D board than try to chase something down on the board itself. Visually the board looks fine. Very informative. I have a Sony KP-46WT500, which has gone dead. During a lightning storm, I heard a pop and saw a flash of light from the unit (which was turned off at the time). The until will not turn on at all now, and there are no blinking lights. I'm just trying to get a handle on what the problem might be, so I can decide whether to attempt the repair myself or call in a tech professional. I have some minimal experience in electronics repair, but don't want to do anything where I am in over my head. Any idea on what the problem may be?

Thanks in advance. Larry Dillon on July 19, 2007 7:18 AM feff1122, this set probably has a bad main fuse right now, but I highly doubt that is the only problem. That would be fuse # F6001, on the "G" board. If that fuse is not bad, then you are going to have a blow input choke or line transformer that blew open, or the possibility of an open printed circuit foil trace. If you see the fuse blown, replace it with a 100 watt light bulb. Simply attach two wires on the light bulb and attach the ends on the fuse terminals. Plug in the set and turn it on. If the bulb pulses on and off, or comes on bright, there is a short in this TV set and you will need to find the short with a meter and a schematic or replace the "G" board. There is also a possiblity that there are problems elsewhere in this set. A power surge is a strange thing that causes all sorts of strange problems with electronics sometimes. If you would like to save 25 bucks or so, leave an e-mail here and I will send you a copt of this service manual. You will need to go to pando.com and download the free software so you can open this manual as it is a large file and thats the only way I can send it. Good Luck with this repair, and let us know what you find with this TV set. feff1122 on July 19, 2007 10:08 AM Larry, Thanks for the prompt response. I'm going test the fuse tonight, and hopefully that is the only problem. my email is feff1122@hotmail.com. Very much appreciate the help. Hamma214 on July 19, 2007 4:29 PM Larry I have a Sony KP51WS500 television. Here is the problem the TV will not come on. The TV will turn itself off after 10 or 15 seconds. The red standby light blinks 8 times , then off, then repeats the pattern. The extened warranty expired 6.5 months ago. The repair people want about $150 to just come to my house, not to mention the labor and parts charges associated with any repair. I have the feeling that they are posed to stick me with a $500 repair build with a 30-day guarantee. Can you share any insight as to what the flashing code may mean and what steps should I take other than call a repair person? ---Thanks feff1122 on July 20, 2007 9:06 AM With reference to my kp-46WT500. Fuse was indeed blown. Tested the 100watt light bulb, and test came back negative for a short (light did not come on), so I replaced the the fuse. TV came back on and is working again. One more quick question. I replaced the fuse with a 6.3a, 250v slow burn fuse from Radio Shack. The original fuse was a Buss GMC (slow burn) 6.3, 125v fuse. I shouldn't have any problem with the additional voltage rating on the replacement fuse, should I? From what I understand, you can go up in rating without a problem, but going down may cause issues in some circumstances. Thanks for your help on this. Larry Dillon on July 20, 2007 4:11 PM feff1122, that is great that you have it working again. Although it is extremly rare that a surge will only blow a fuse, there are times when you get lucky, and yes you did get lucky! Glod to have helped asd a repairman would have charged you at least 100 or so bucks to come out and fix this, if indeed they would have replaced the fuse in the house. I have seen a few techs get up to 400 or so bucks for a job like this. The voltage on the fuse really will not make a big differance, as it is the slow blow and the amps are correct, so you should be good. lafalot on July 20, 2007 10:25 PM Larry, Great advice website. I have four blinks and hopefully I can just replace a few parts and get this tv workin again. chadgt on July 26, 2007 9:31 AM even though i never got any comments to my posts on july 6 and 10, i figured i'd give an update, i just picked up my KV32FS16 at repair shop last night after they replaced the flyback transformer for my screen that had red flashes until it went to a blue screen with white horizontal lines, with diag code of 5 blinking lights (even though my research on here and on web didn't really point to that for 5 flashing lights) and all seems ok. i do have 2 quick questions though, i see on the invoice that he used transformer pn 1-453-338-41. when i look up my original part at partstore.com, it was -11, however i see that that part was superceded by -21. no mention of -41 for my specific model. when i look up -41, it lists -41, -21, and -31, with a note saying that -21 is a direct replacement of -41, but not vice versa. can i assume that vice versa would be the case and that the -41 should be fine for my tv even though my model was not listed under -41. i'm sorry but i'm just being particular with the part numbers. second, while doing a quick browse through all the service mode settings after the repair (i had written them all down previous to the repair), i see that the only one that is different is PREL, pre-shoot/over=shoot, changed from 0 to 1. what exactly is this setting for? would something during the repair have changed this, or did/could it have changed when i did the self diag mode reset to reset the counter for the 5 blink error codes to zero since the repair tech did not do this? tia. chad Ray34xbr on July 27, 2007 12:50 AM I would like to say I am a first time visitor because my Sony KV 34XBR800 trouble free til now. I am getting no picture or sound when powered up. I do see 7 blinks on the standby red light. Thank you in advance, Ray Gamb00ler on July 27, 2007 4:20 PM Hello Larry and everyone else! My problem is with a 5 yr old KV-36XBR450. It is periodically shutting down. When this happens the power light blinks 4 times. I went in to the self-diagnosis menu and it lists V STOP and AKB as having had an error. I called the Sony recommended service shop in my area. The service technician diagnosed it as a problem on the D board. The shop called the next day and said they could not get a new D board and that they would have to identify the exact problem and repair the old board. The charge would be $600+ (in addition to the $85 service call fee already incurred!). I am of course unhappy with this answer. I find it hard to believe that Sony no longer supplies new D boards. My questions are: 1) is it true that a new D board cannot be purchased from Sony for this TV? 2) if a new D board is available, what would it cost and where can I get one? 3) if no new D board available what is the best source and price for a used one? 4) my only electronics experience is assembling my own desktop computers. Should I attempt to replace my own D board? Thanks to all for a very informative and helpful web site! Gamb00ler Larry Dillon on July 27, 2007 7:23 PM
Gamb00ler, If I were you, I would search all of your address book for a friend who may have a little more printed circuit board experience then you do. This is not really a hard thing to replace, but there is a little more involved then a simple plug to plug replacement. the high voltage lead for instance, it comes off a special way, and the service manual shows exactly how this is done, and also any adjustments that may need to be done, such as convergence. No, every board is not exactly the same, as part tolerances are a bit different on every board. You can go to http://www.tristatemodule.com/. Find the phone number and see if you can get the D board number off of the original board, as they have a few on special right now for like 80 bucks! Heck the fly-back cost more then that. The new D board also includes new convergence IC's. So if your picture tubes and the rest of the TV set is in good shape, you should get several more years out of your TV set. Oh, if Tri-State does not have the board, or cannot repair it for you, try going to ptscorp.com, find the phone number there, and call them to see if they have any exchange boards or maybe can repair your board for you. Sorry, the best I can do for you right now. You really should go to http://www.servicemanuals.net, enter your model number for the service manual, and download the manual, as you should see how the board comes out, and like I said before, any alignments you may need to do. Good Luck with this repair, and let us know how you make out with this repair.

Looking forward to hearing from u aneuhaus on August 8, 2007 11:15 AM Larry, DakotaI am having the exact same issue with my KV-32v42. I had a repair tech come out and diagnose the problem and he told me it was the IC chip CXA2095S that was bad. (This chip controls the Y/C/RGB/Sync/Deflection for Color TV.) which seemed to make perfect sense to me. What did not make sense was the 400 bucks he wanted to chanrge me when the TV only cost 600. Being in the IC industry I replaced the chip

myself and was excited that my TV was working perfectly... until two days later and the same thing started happening again. I have the Service manual but would like some help diagnosing the problem further. Thanks in advance, this post itself had helped educate me termendously about televisions in general and how they work. It is much appreciated. Dakota, were you ever able to fix your tv and what did that require? DakotaFox said: Hello, I have a Sony KV-32v42. Thank You for your time. dkidd on August 9, 2007 4:44 PM Hi, I have a Sony KP51ws520. Hey LarryThanks for all to info you give everyone. You certainly know your stuff! I have a Sony KP-53xbr45 and its not turning on. Maybe the standby light will flash 1 time and then off. Jim My TV finally works. What a stupid service man. He had no service manual did not know the blink codes had no idea which board was the G board. Then he tried to argue with me grabbed the board tray aned tried to yank it out of the TV. He did get a piece of my my mind and a call to sears one telling him to replace remove the board and have replacement mailed to me. Same guy to put it in 3 weeks later. My son was home, he was afraid I would show up. My son told him I was sleeping. He tried to put in the board and not plug it in. My son said what about those plugs. He asked if he could try it and the TV came on. The Tech left and sat in his van for 30 mins. came back in and said he could not warranty it and it would not last. Due to "humidittttys" my son said that is alright it works now. The tech sat in back and vacumed and cleaned the back of the TV for 30+ min. and then tried to explain to my son the problem. He finally told him he did not care it was working fine. He then left . Well thanks for the web site and board. It really helped. I usally have service contracts and do not have to work on my appliances. This was the most outragious serviceman. It was humerous, I am sure "chort" will be a topic in our family for years. Sear's service warranties sure have declined in quality since they were taken over by KMART. I have done some research and Walmart sells online big screen TV's with the same warranty company as Best Buy and Circuit City only their contraCTS ARE 1/3 of the price for the same item.

Larry, I'm afraid I've come to an impasse on my solo repair effort and must again rely upon your knowledge, experience and generous helpful advice. I have downloaded and read the service manual, but I cannot find out exactly how to disconnect one of the HV leads from the D board. I have successfully disconnected the anode cap connection without damage. But, I cannot see how to disconnect the HV lead that goes from the D

board to the C board. The service manual states that a NEW D board does not include the HV leads and they must be ordered seperately. It is my hope that I can remove the D board complete with the HV leads and send it to Tri-State-Module for repair. Can you help with suggestions about disconnecting the HV lead from D to C boards? I can e-mail you the service manual if needed. Thank you, Gamb00ler Larry Dillon on August 15, 2007 7:00 PM What was that model number gamb00ler, and if I can assist you I certainly will. Anyways... he told me that it didn't work so I thought I might try and fix it. I'm experiencing 7 blinks from the standby light, and when you look at the screen you can see the green bulb blinking. Upon taking off the backing, I can see all three bulbs blinking, but the red and blue are dim. Any suggestions on where to start? JC23 on August 21, 2007 12:23 PM New to the site here. Here is my story. I got a Sony KP57WS500 for free the other day. The guy i got it from told me that there was no picture but that there is a sound. So i took it home looked up some problems on the internet. When i plugged in the TV I had a green screen with lines going across the screen. And the Stanby light would blink 8 times. The site advised me to adjust some knobs red, blue, green. so i adjusted the green knob and i got the picture. It looked perfect. Worked for about 10 minutes, and then screen started turning green again and then black. but i still had sound. Went back and did some more ajustments and same thing would happen. But now it started to smell like something was burning. You know that smell when something electrical starts to burn. So i don't know if there is a short or what? And now my standby light blinks 5 times. Would appreciate any help. Thanx guys. Larry Dillon on August 21, 2007 12:46 PM Your picture tube is bad. The green one. You probably burned out the voltage supply resistor going to the green tube, and that supplies voltage to other circuits in the set. Thank you for saving us so much time as we troubleshoot our Sony KP-57HW40. We have the service manual and have determined the problem to be the D board. There are two part numbers associated with the D board. A1300417-A and A-1348038-A. Our problem now seems to be finding the D board. In reading this thread, I see where someone found a D board for $140.00, which would be in our budget. We did find one place that sold it but they were out of stock and, when in stock the part was $310.00 Thank you. bito148 on August 25, 2007 6:51 PM Larry Dillon said: Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. (AY Board) Where might I find the +5 line? The set will still turn on, but after sitting overnight, when I do turn the set on, it immediately goes to the standby mode where I then get the (6 Blinks). I can press the power button again and the set will power up and works fine all day. I can go into the diagnostic screen and reset the error 6 code to 0 to eliminate the blinking light and I can turn the set on and off without any error codes during the day. It seems like the only time I get the error code 6 is when the set has been off for an extended period of time (overnight) in my case. Good Luck Christine118 on September 13, 2007 9:38 AM Hi, I googled about the problem we're having with our TV, so it seems like this is the place for advice. We have a Sony KV-32FS320 32" FD Trinitron Wega, and 2 weeks ago, it started having problems. When we press the Power button, it takes a lot of tries to get it on. Since then, we tried to just keep the TV on with the cable off, but I accidentally shut it off this past Sunday, and now I can't even get it on at all. It blinks 9 times. I tried unplugging it overnight, but it still won't come on no matter how many times you press the Power button. Are we able to fix this ourselves? If we can't, then I'd rather just buy a new TV rather than having to pay someone to look at it and then pay for the part and them fixing it. If there's a manual to follow, maybe my husband can attempt to try to fix it, and worse comes to worse, if it's not fixed, we'll just buy a new TV. Thanks in advance for your help. They should be available at http://www.partstore.com or a local Sony parts distributor should have these common diodes. DO NOT JUST RESOLDER THEM!! This will make the set work temporarly, but will not fix it unless you replace them. Good Luck and let us know if

this helps you out. Christine118 on September 13, 2007 11:01 AM Thanks so much. I found those parts on the website you posted. Wait, actually, it says for the second part you listed that that part is no longer offered and this is now a replacement: 8-719-074-43. Except I didn't see my model as one of the models it's okay to use for. What do you think? Is there a manual we can follow since we don't have much experience with this? Where exactly are the PSU and the horizontal circuit for this problem ? Also, there is something about the horizontal deflection stop that need to be check out or reset Can you help to locate and provide some tip to troubleshoot this issue please ? Hi Larry, I bought the service manual from the link that you provided to other reader. I found the main PSU and Horizontal deflection circuit on the D board. So, can i just replace the failure component (which one/part #) or I need to replace the whole D-board ? Thank you for any advise. Dass Larry Dillon on September 14, 2007 8:54 AM Dass, the problem might be the transformer as the blink codes only give the tech a clue where the problem is. If you are experienced troubleshooting the circuits with a schematic and can follow circuit flow, then for sure repair the D board. But if it does not work by replacing the parts mentioned, you will inevitably need to replace the D board if you can find one. You could also take out the D board and ship it to ptscorp.com, they overhaul boards for people. Go to the website and get the toll free number and give then a call. Good Luck. Christine118 on September 14, 2007 2:23 PM Hi - I actually ordered the service manual yesterday. I tried to look through it myself, but on the diagrams, they don't show a G board. annaobc on September 18, 2007 6:40 PM hoping someone can assist me....I have a sony KV 34HS510 and after reading all of the posts...which were great.... I realize that the blinking "stand by" lights were due to a bad power supply/transformer. Can someone let me know what I should be paying to repair this .... I dont want to be ripped off too much. Thanks so much Anna Larry Dillon on September 18, 2007 6:54 PM Too much?LOL You should not want to get ripped off at all my friend. LOL Those blinking codes are to point the tech in the area where the problem is. They do not mean specifically that the flyback is bad, but to look in that circuit for the fault. However sometimes the fly is the problem. This type of repair could run you anywhere from 200 bucks all the way up to 400 bucks. You could simply take out the D board and ship it out to ptscorp, and they could rebuild it, but you would have to know how to disassemble the TV set and what to adjust when you got it back. I would like to see what parts the tech is refering to and be sure he is repairing the tv according to Sony's specs. I would also like to look into getting a replacement board instead of fixing the components if I can order it for around the same price. The tech said the flyback transformer went bad and shorted the horizontal output. He also said that the processor IC (is this the jungle ic?) is on a different board and is also bad. Does $370 sound reasonable for this repair? I do not know if these guys are honest or not. porac69 on September 24, 2007 9:04 AM Hi, I have a kv-x2962u model SONY TRINITRON television. Thanks and God Bless Larry Dillon on September 28, 2007 1:12 PM thats a hard call my last two posts friends. You could possibly have a g or a D board problem, but it is also very possible that the picture tubes are bad. If the tech took off the front of the set and look at the picture tubes for tiny sparks in the tubes when the set is on or first turned on, then I would say, yes, the tubes are bad. This happens to a lot of early production models of the Sony projection TV sets. Before I spent a 1000 bucks, I would certainly go and look at other new tube type projection TV sets, as I have seen brand new sets going for under 1000 bucks. I have the same problem that DakotaFox had and same model. Can someone be kind enough to send me the repair manual? Thank you , well at the end i pissoff and dont call them again.

very much in advance. -HQ buuushman on October 3, 2007 4:26 PM I have a Sony Wega HD TV. Watching tv one day, the tv made a loud snap and the tv turned off. After turning it back on, the tv would automatically shut off when the tube tried to come on. The light at the bottom blinks seven times an interval. I cannot see anything on top of the boards which would indicate a problem. I live on Maui and don't have the money to pay Sears ( the only repair shop) the inflated cost of even the diagnostic check. Can you reccomend a solution? Model # KV 32HS420 ralphieboy on October 4, 2007 5:36 PM First, I would like to thank you for some REAL information concerning TV repair. I realize repair people need to feed their families also, but some of us still like to do it ourselves, if possible. That said, I have a Sony WEGA Model KV-32FS16. I will try to describe the trouble as thoroughly as possible to hopefully narrow down the trouble. First let me say that so far as I can tell the blink code I am getting is number 4 (4 blinks). I turn the set on for the first time, it stays powered on with no video or sound for a second or two, then shuts itself off. After this I get the 4 blinks. I repeat the powering on and it turning itself off several times (usually about 6 or 7 times), and it will eventually start the sound, and then the video several seconds later. During this process of repeated turning on, I can hear the picture tube crackling a bit more and more with successive turn-ons, the loudest being just before the final turn on that lets it stay on. The set then functions perfectly until I turn it off. It has never had any trouble whatsoever once it is on, and there are no blinks once it is on. I have already removed the back and poked around, having repaired older tube televisions in the past, I am not fearful and know what to watch out for such as the flyback. I found nothing that looks obviously fried or close to being so such as burnt looking or melting, etc. ralphieboy on October 4, 2007 8:27 PM Here's a quick update... I removed the back of the set again to take a second look around. Again, nothing obviously cooked looking, but I did notice a large grease-like stain around the flyback suction cup on the picture tube itself. I got some insulated gloves and pliers, and gave the cup a little twisting action to see if there might be a poor connection there due to this grease, and put it all back together. The symptoms are the same as before (takes several tries before the set comes on), but now the crackling sound from the picture tube (similar to the sound it would make as it finally turned on) is constant. Could this grease be the trouble? I assume it was put there to prevent mold, water penetration, etc. but should I discharge the tube and clean it off? What other trouble could this poor connection have caused with the electronics (assuming it is the cause)? I hope I don't have to change the flyback transformer (eek!) ralphieboy on October 7, 2007 3:47 AM Ok, after a third poke I did see something unnerving. I brushed the dust off the flyback transformer, and the long vertical portion does have a bright looking portion on one side... Almost as though it is probably getting real hot during operation... Also the crackling I noted as being constant in my last post actually stops after a half hour or so. There is also occasionally a high pitched whine after the set has been on for awhile. I'm going to roll the dice and say the flyback is close to a blowout. Mainly due to the fact that I do use this set quite often, and I don't need a fire starting... But before I spend the $100 and the effort in replacing it can someone at least fart in my direction or something if they think I've made the right diagnosis? :) The color and overall brightness has become brighter since my fiddling with the flyback suction cup as well. If anyone has a service manual they can send me for the KV32FS16 I would appreciate it. My email is ralphpagan@gmail.com. How does this pando thing work? I will download it if the service manual is available. Two set that several are possibly interchangeable... Are all these parts basically the same: 1-453-338-11, 1-453-338-21, 1-453-338-31, 1-453-33841? They all have a prefix of FBT NX-4600. Thanks for putting up with me! Good luck Larry Dillon on October 7, 2007 12:40 PM Ralphieboy, the grease your referring to is normal thing to have around that suction cup. It is a high voltage grease to keep moisture out of the cup and to stop the cup from arching when it is humid. The flyback is probably bad, but there really is no way to test it without a coil ringer. It is a type of test equipment and that does not always test it 100% as well. The best way to see if that is the problem is to replace it. I do not have that service manual. If you saw the flyback after I cleaned off the dust you would probably say its bad/going bad. I am thinking of just replacing the main board or "A" board, but what is the board that is mounted vertically on the "A" board that plugs in like a video card on a computer and recieves the signal from the front interface board? Sears lists each board for about $100, I am kind of guessing here. Even if I replace them both, its still cheaper than what the repair company quoted me for 1 board! Go figure. Frank Dogg on October 17, 2007 8:18 AM Hi, Just wanted to let you know I repaired my wega tv by resoldering a group of components on the "A" board. Apparently the problem stems from a poor wave soldering process in the factory and now its working like a charm. In case anyone needs to know, the parts resoldered were: Q605, D647, C690, D645, D620, R691, Q691, on the main circuit board at the bottom of the tv. No more on screen fault codes and it didn't cost me a dime. Some say its a temp fix, but hey, it was free! Thanks for your help Larry Dillon. Oh, and by the way, these parts ARE part of a "ZCD" or zero crossing circuit. Have a nice day. Larry Dillon on October 17, 2007 8:38 AM One of the diodes are bad and this will break down again. When it does, you will need to find the diodes in the zero crossing circuit and replace it. Get a chart, count the bands and colors, and there you have it! If you go to Radio Shack and look at the resistors there in the parts bin, most have the chart on the back, or do a search. Nope, the picture tubes are going bad my friend. When you disconnect the leads off the distribution block, you are only lightening up the CRT drive load. One or more of your picture tubes are bad most likely. briandavis on October 28, 2007 8:20 AM Larry Dillon said: Nope, the picture tubes are going bad my friend. I didn't disconnect the high voltage leads off of the high voltage block. I disconnected a two conductor cable from the D board. What does this two conductor cable control. Is there a relay in the high voltage block? Does this cable turn on the hv block? If the block was internally shorted, would that give me the same results as the CRT being bad? All CRT's light up and appear to be ok. Can I disconnect the hv cables from the block individually to determine which CRT is bad? If not, how do I determine which CRT is bad? Larry Dillon on October 28, 2007 8:22 AM No, do not disconnect the high voltage cable off the block. I have a Sony KDF-70xbr950 television with a mind of its own. Once its turned on, it turns off by itself after about 5 minutes. It stays off for about another 2 minutes and then comes back on. This goes on repeatedly. If I shut off the set, the red power/standby light blinks on/off five times. Important to note. I had this problem last year for a couple of weeks and it went away by itself. This time, the on/off cycling is more frequent. Most posts I've seen with similar problems don't mention how it was resolved or how expensive it is to fix. I spoke with Sony reps who gave me step by step instructions on unplugging and replugging in the TV...then informed me that I would have to contact a service tech. I asked what the field data looked like on this problem...since I have seen it posted in many places (everyone looking for solutions). They said they don't have that information available. tarheelFan on November 12, 2007 7:16 AM I have had a Sony KF-50XBR800 LCD Projection TV for over 5 years with no problems, but it has now developed the symptom of turns itself off after a minute or so, stays in standby mode for a bit and repeats that cycle. When I turn off the TV the standby light blinks 5 times which likely indicates the AKB circuit - based on earlier posts. I suspect this TV is old enough to not be effected by the 'updated' blink codes. Larry, if you have the service manual, would you e-mail that to me (p.amburn@gmail.com)? Great posts on Sony TVs - very glad I found this site. I'm comfortable with computers, minor electronics, but have not done TV repair. Not certain if this is beyond my reach for home repair. Larry Dillon on November 12, 2007 7:52 AM This TV set is an LCD type set and has no picture tube. The AKB is used only on sets that have a picture tube. Your problem is a bad lamp driver circuit. StephaneB on November 14, 2007 10:59 PM Hey, Larry I've been reading your posts and want to thank you for such useful information. This site has to be one of the best I have found on troublshooting these devices. Great job! Anyway, I have info to share and info I need to find: RE: Sony KV-32TS36 TV Was given this set free of charge. WOW! But it didn't work. Started out without power. Called the local tech shop, they were very helpful. Had a kit of about 4 parts that are the ususal suspects on these tvs. Cost about 20 bux. 1 resistor, 2 identical transistors and another transistor. I replaced the parts, and VOILA! it was alive! now the problem was no video. Lots of noise, though, and clear once I connect the TV cable. An internet search later found a clue if I hit the TV on the left side, the picture would return. I did that, and it did return, but only for a little while. If I left the tv off overnight, another whack was required. I supposed there was a cold solder joint, so more searching let to IC301 (the jungle IC). I disassembled the tv again, resoldered the IC, and anything else I thought could use it. The tv now turned on, and on the first attempt, 4 blinks then the picture came on. Power cycled a few times, everything seemed OK. Now after about 20 minutes use, the image and sound started to jump (like the input line was momentarily shorted). I tried several input sources to rule out weather, etc. All the same. When the tv was working, it also seemed to have poor RGB convergance on the corners. White areas had the primary colors next to it. Any ideas where I should look next? I have the service manual, if anyone needs it. It covers KV-27ts29/27TS32/27TS36 KV-32TS36/32TS46 models. I am also looking for an original Sony remote compatible with this TV. Kinda hard to get into the service menu with a universal remote, although I haven't tried.... Thanks for any advice. My email address is crang94@hotmail.com ifyou are looking for the manual. *** UPDATE *** FYI, I fixed the TV. The New symptoms that seemed to poing to shorting or arcing HV turned out to be a loosly installed flyback on the picture tube. If it weren't for the suction cup, the HV would have probably started a fire within the TV. Typically, how long after turning on the power, should you see an image? When I turn on the set, I hear sound right away, and the standby light blinks for about 7-8 times, then the picture just appears. I have never owned a Sony TV before this, so I am not sure if this is normal, or if there is still another issue. toc9498 on November 15, 2007 9:55 PM Hello Larry, I have a Sony KP-51HW40 television. Thanks Tony Dazman on November 20, 2007 7:40 AM Read thru all 14 pages and seems you've got your hands full Larry but any chance you (or anyone else) can help me? I've got an KF-42SX300U that's decided to show the 3 blink OVP error code. My problem is I cant find a schematic to see where the dodgy components are located. I've looked at several other Sony schematics hoping that some components may be similar but catn fint T603 or R672 in any of them. Any clues please? Thanks. Daz Larry Dillon on November 20, 2007 8:06 AM Dazman. Your TV set is an LCD type and the three blink code does not mean this on this model of TV set. I am however in the process of redoing the Sony blinking codes so it is a little better understood for all of the Sony TV sets. On your set, the three blink code is a warning that the lamp cover is loose or not installed properly. It could have come loose or there is a bad switch on the cover. If you are handy, check the cover and the mounting of it. Good Luck Dazman on November 20, 2007 3:10 PM Thanks for the speedy response Larry. I'll let you know how it turns out. Daz. Dazman on November 21, 2007 3:59 AM Right, got the screwy drivers out last night and this is what I found; The light cover microswitch does not seem faulty as the blink code changes to 2 when removed and reverts back to 3 when replaced. I did find that there is a light eminating from the Lamp Supply Block (SN 146879814) like a super bright white LED but it was not an LED. I've attached picture (from phone so sorry if not clear) of area where light shows. I have more pictures plus video but dont want to clog this system up. Thanks. SONY27Owner on November 22, 2007 10:34 PM Larry I've got 7-blinker bad news. I read the diagnostic you provided at the top of the thread but I am not familiar enough with electronics to know what the implications are. Is this fixable at home by a layman? If a professional is needed, any idea the degree of severity - that is, closer to replacing a light bulb and worth the repair or closer to repairing a picture tube and start thinking about making the kids happy with a new plasma TV. The model is KV-27HS420 if that helps. Thanks for the help. This is a great service. Larry Dillon on November 22, 2007 10:55 PM On this model number, a seven blinker means a horizontal deflection stop. This could be a minor bad solder connection in or around the High Voltage transformer, or a major breakdown. However, since this is in the high voltage area, this type of repair is not for the layman to do. If you wish to invest the money, a tech would be your best bet. I am sorry but there are no quick fixes I have on record for this model. According to the service manual, which cam out in 2004, this set does have a self diagnostic system, but this does not tell you what part is bad. Good Luck SONY27Owner on November 22, 2007 11:05 PM Wow! Unbelievable service. I thought I'd check back in in a few days and hope for the best. You need to replace or have two diodes on the G board replaced or the G board can be sent out to ptscorp.com and have it rebuilt. Not really a job for the novice I'm afraid. You should also call the repair shop and tell them that you need to replace the G board or the two zero crossover diodes and see if they know what you are talking about. An authorized Sony repair shop would, or should know what this problem is. Good Luck. Pat P on November 26, 2007 1:08 PM Larry Dillon said: Pat P, Do you want me to come to Florida? I have a KP57WS500. it's giving a 5 blink code, and sometimes the Red CRT goes nuts and get very bright and has retrace lines. If I cycle the power it goes back to normal. Problem is the last few times this has happened it has burnt a spot into the Red CRT. I now have a dime sized blue dot in the center of my screen. I've read through the service manual and learned what the 5 blinks mean. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the A board or could it be the CRT itself? When i adjust the screen voltage Blue and Green adjust as expected but Red doesn't seem to change at all no matter how far I turn it up or down. I researched prices for the A board and CRT. If I do need the a board and the CRT it's going to be a tough call on whether to fix it. I'm pretty handy which such things, but I'm not sure if the repair could be done without a scope. Any suggestions? Thanks Paul Larry Dillon on December 16, 2007 4:50 AM It sounds like you have a bad picture tube, and possibly a bad CRT driver board. The board is suppose to mute the video so that incase you lose sweep or when the set shuts off, the lose of sweep does not burn the tubes. I would replace both at the same time. Good Luck DMZ on December 23, 2007 12:56 PM I have a KV-36XBR800, now about 4 years old and a terriffic set for both regular and HDTV. Starting this morning, Sunday, Christmas Eve Eve morning (of course) turning on the set yields a blue screen with faint horizontal lines followed by the set's automatic shut off after a few seconds. The red light on the bottom front blinks 7 times, pauses for 3 seconds, then repeats. The troubleshooting guide shows this to be: High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits." Anyone have any idea what kind of repair bill this could wind up to be? Of course I'm now f**ked for X-Mas and more than likely won't get anyone until after this Tuesday.

Yeah, smart, and didn't listen to Consumer Reports for a change who''s busy telling everyone extended warranties are a waste of money. Can't begin to imagine the repair bill if it turns out to be the picture tube and there was no warranty coverage. Larry Dillon on December 24, 2007 1:34 PM On any large item purchase, you should include the extended warranty in your budget. I have even negotiated a free extended warranty with a purchase of a fridge. It is not hard to do. You have a lot of playing room when it comes to the appliance/TV stores. Not with the superstores like Wal-Mart though. GES1407 on December 29, 2007 2:11 PM Hi, My neighbour has a 50" sony 3lcd rear projection tv, a while after he bought it he has a purple haze in certain parts of the screen, which i searched the internet for him & found it to be the optical block, which the catalogue he had it from replaced under warranty, now the warranty has expired & he is getting the tv turning itself off randomly, was blinking red 3 times, After another search online we found some component number to check on the power supply, so we looked, but the numbers were nowhere to be found. when we put it all back together & tried it it wouldnt fire up at all, just hear some clicks, then we now get 2 blinks of the red light, which apparently is a power supply short circuit. He said he's had enough now & bought a new LCD tv, & has offered the faulty sony tv to me for free to see if i can get it working, i have some knowledge of component level replacement etc, but could really do with the schematics diagram to find the faulty part & any help or experience of any similar problems would be gratefully appreciated. Many Thanks. Pat P on December 29, 2007 8:21 PM We also have a Sony KV32HS420 CRT tube type, where when we turned it on one day and had no picture at all, just sound. The blinking code light was 7 count, of the which I understand is attributed to the high voltage circuit being bad. Previous owner said a service tech told him the Blue bulb was going bad. I setup the TV and it showed a nice picture for
about 5-10 seconds, then the screen when blue, then shut off. (The blue bulb was lit). Then the standby light started blinking 8 times repeatedly. I purchased a refurbed D board from Sony for $175 and installed it today thinking that was the issue after viewing prior comments and seeing the Blue bulb lit, but the above issue still persists. What could be the issue? Is there a way to test the blue bulb without having to purchase one? Why would it lite at all if it is bad? Looking forward to your response! And please send me the manual for this set, if you have it projects4joe@gmail.com! Joe

justin nichols on January 3, 2008 9:58 PM I'm looking for a schematic for an 51hw40 or 57hw40. My email is justin.e.nichols@gmail.com I just aquired a sony 51hw40 and I suspect it has a bad flyback transformer. the symtom is 6 blinks, no picture, and the power supply chirps then goes into protection. I checked voltages coming off the power supply and found that the +/- 22v and +/- 15v were high and the 135v b+ was slightly low. I disconnected the 135v line and the tv powered on and stayed on and the power supply voltages went back to normal which indicates a problem with the D board. I removed the pcb and started probing for shorts but was unable to find any. It seems that the horizontal drive and hi-voltage power suppy are 2 seperate circuts on opposite sides of the D board so I decided to disconnect one and try to isolate where the short is. I disconnected L8011 which feeds the high voltage p.s. and tested. the tv powered up with a different error code. In looking more closely I found that the FET that drives the flyback also drives another transformer (T8004) which supplies 200v and filament voltages to the video boards. I also noticed that these two transformers were running parallel to each other. figuring that T8004 would keep a load on the circut I removed the flyback and powered the tv on again. this time I had filaments on the picture tubes. I didn't really expect that since there seems to be a referance wire coming from the HV splitted block that that p.s. relies on for regulation and protection, at least I thought. Anyways I put the flyback transformer back and one by one started disconnecting picture tubes to make sure none were shorted. As far as I can tell none were. I would not consider myself an expert on tv repair. I'm a computer tech by trade but I like to tinker and I have enough experience to know my way around a chassis. Larry, this is a crazy long thread and I appreciate ppl like you that take the time to try and help. Anyways my questions are. Do you agree that this may be a shorted flyback and If not is there anything else I should check. I don't like replacing boards, If the D board can be repaired I want to repair it. My other question is about the retrace lines of death. It seems that the picture tube are prone to failure on this model. Is this something to be worried about being that I've never seen this tv with a picture. thanks for your time justin nichols on January 5, 2008 1:38 AM Hi Joe, I couldn't help but notice you're post so I'm gonna reply. With a picture tube you could get an internal short and still have it be "lit". the question is, when the screen goes blue, do you see retrace lines, (lines running horizontally across the screen at a slight angle). If you do, there's a good chance of a short or at least leakage in the picture tube. It's a hard thing to test for because like a capacitor, alot of times the short will only appear with a load........or overload (current leakage). The picture tube could also be hitting it's cut off point due to the insulation materials breaking down inside it. maybe you should try turning down the screen voltage for the blue tube. It's an adjustment on the focustat block. (a black block with six adjustments, 3 for focus, and 3 for screen voltages. If it's anything like my tv, It will be behind the speaker grill and be the bottom left adjustment on the block for blue. you might try turning it counter clockwise a quarter of a turn and see what happens. of course it would throw your color off so you'd be doing some adjusting to get color cal right. I'm not sure what goes wrong with these tubes but it's not uncommon to get a heater-cathode short. It could also be a failing cap on the video board. a shorted coupling cap might cause somthing like that. The tv I'm using now is an RCA 52" hi def that had a shorted coupling cap that was wreaking havoc on the green gun. that was another case of the tv shop telling the customer

that it had a bad picture tube so he was going to through it away. I'm glad I saved it. YaY, free tv for me!!!! anyways thats just my 2 cents, whatever thats worth. I hope it helps. Justin Don McBride on January 5, 2008 12:57 PM

I was wondewring if anyonoe could help. I was told that by a tech that I needed a new blue tube in my KP-57HW-40 TV. So I bought one and put it in plug all the wires back where they came from and now when I turn the TV on it comes on for about 5 seconds then the blue tube goes bright and right away shuts down the TV. The red light flashes 8 times. Before I replaced the tube the TV would stay on, it would have a good picture for about 15 min. then go all blue but would never shut off. I thouhgt I needed the red and green tubes but the tech that checked it said no it was the blue tube pulling all the power from the other two. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks Don Mc justin nichols on January 5, 2008 1:45 PM Hi Don, the first thing I would check is the focustat (the black box on the front of the tv with six adjustments on it), and make sure all the cables are seated into it (from the back side) tight. CAREFULL HI VOLTAGE!!! maybe you pulled the screen grid wire off when you were replacing the picture tube. I suppose it could also be the block itself. maybe you should see if you can control the brightness of the blue tube by turning the screen voltage adjustment up and down. (I believe it is the bottom left adjustment) if you cannot it may mean that the block is bad. It could also be a shorted cap on the video board as well. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Justin It could also be that your new crt it bad. If you had it shipped to you and it wasn't packaged to survive a nuclear bomb the elements could have been damaged in shipping. they are fairly delicate and not made to be bounced around a lot. Larry Dillon on January 6, 2008 7:08 AM justin, I sent out that service manual you asked for. Thanks for the assistance here. What is the model number of the set you are looking for? As to the focus, the focus controls are on the same block where you turned down the screen control to fix the set temporarily. What you need to do is take off the front screen. look at the focus controls and screen control block. They will have a R, G, and a B next to the focus control. With the screen off the set and the TV turned on, look right into the picture tube lens while rocking back and forth that color of tube you are looking into so that you can focus that color. Do the same for the other two colors. David Fournier on January 10, 2008 5:03 PM I wish that someone could answer my question from three days ago. I checked the self-diag light and it flashed 10 times. Will this need the convergence IC replacement/repair that I have been reading so much about? Or is it possible there is an adjustment to repair this problem? Thanks Mikeya11 on January 11, 2008 12:08 AM RE:KP-46WT500 ......One thing to add just now I took the panel off on the back..the Blue CRT does not come on at all. Does this mean simply replace the CRT? Or is there a possible short elsewhere in the circuit? Larry Dillon on January 11, 2008 7:52 AM If you have no blue, of course that's why the picture is green looking. You could have a bad tube but most likely, not. Open the front cover behind the speaker grill. You will see a small block with 6 screw type adjustment knobs on it. The row that is marked screen or S, you will see a R, a G and a B. Slowly, with the set turned on, turn the B or the blue SCREEN control, NOT the focus control clockwise and see if the blue tube starts to light. If it does and you get a picture, your screen needs to be adjusted to the rest of the picture. If it does light up in the blue tube, but! there is no picture, that means you have a bad video drive board on the blue tube OR an RGB drive problem and will take farther troubleshooting to find these problems. If the blue tube does not light when you turn up the blue screen control and you are Handy, Find the blue tube and with the set off and unplugged, gently pull off the blue drive board off the end of the blue tube. Now, the green tube is right next to the blue one, pull off that tube drive board and switch them around. In other words install the green tube drive board on the blue tube, and the blue tube drive board on the green tube. Make sure nothing is touching or shorting out. Plug in the set and turn it on. If the blue tube comes on, but the green one does not, Your drive board or RGB circuit is bad, If the green tube comes on and the blue does not, that means the blue picture tube is bad and would need to be replaced. When using the flash focus the blue cross is off to the bottom right. most of the time when I hit focus it doesnt move very much. but at other times it will make it all the way to the center and turn the cross white but then when it goes back to the video its off again. any ideas ? Dave R on January 13, 2008 7:14 AM Hi larry, I have a Sony KDLL32MRX1 tv. The TV use to take 5 or six attempts to start and resulted in 6 blinking red LEDS. When I took the back off the set you could hear arching from the relays on the G1 board on start up. I have now replaced these relays and reinstalled the G1 board. I still get the six blinking lights but now the relays fail to pull in. Can you help ? Larry Dillon on January 13, 2008 8:32 AM mikeya, read this article about convergence please. http://www.techlore.com/article/19631/Sony-Convergence-Procedure/ JimmyB on January 14, 2008 9:56 AM Hi Larry! I have a Sony KP57HW40 with a code blinking eight. The screen flashes green and the set shuts off. Sometimes the set is fine for a week or so then it acts up again. Would you point me in the right direction for repair and do you think it is worth being fixed? Any idea of what the repair bill may be if I can't fix it myself? The set is about 6 years old. Would you send the repair manual if you have it? Thanks, Jim TheDrew on January 14, 2008 10:13 AM Does anyone have the service manual for a KP-57ws510? projects4joe on January 14, 2008 2:40 PM projects4joe said: Larry Dillon said: Thats all good my friend, but that is only a temporary fix, and may work for a while, but you will still need to replace the tube in the near future. Now, take a soft cloth, spray some Windex onto the cloth. wipe off the lens on the three tubes as well as on the mirrors and that should make the set look pretty good for a short time till the set starts to shut down again. Thanks for the info. My set is a Sony KP51WS500. Do you happen to know the part number for the Blue Bulb and where one can be found? Larry, Can you send me the service manual for KP51WS500? I have the focus cleaned up as best as possible, but have ghosting(white/light blue) of images like lines on the football field etc. Is this because the blue bulb is going? Text is easy to read on the screen now. Larry Dillon on January 14, 2008 3:35 PM Projects4joe, where would you like me to send it to? Larry, Please send the manual to jimbonidie@telstart.net Thanks! k2schaib on January 16, 2008 6:50 PM hello, I was reading this article trying to fix my projection T.V. and Larry, you clearly have alot of knowledge of the subject so I thought I would post and see what came of it. Model # is KP46WT510, It had an eight blink diagnostic code which I found to be the HV block. Replaced that and fired it up. Powered on, albeit with a convergence issue, but nonetheless seemed to be working. I hit the flash focus and about five minutes later the T.V. cut out. Now all I get is a six blink diagnostic. On the web this seems to be a voltage issue of some kind. Read it could be the flyback transformer. Wondering what you thought of it. When I hit the power button it seems to try to power on for less than a second and then shuts off and gives the six blink code. Could you also send the service manual for the set as well? email: k2schaib@hotmail.com Thanks Larry BobE on January 16, 2008 8:22 PM Hi Larry, I want to add my thanks to the many before me who have thanked you for the service you are providing on this board. Your advice has helped so many, which gives me hope you can do the same for me. My KDF-50WE655 went bad on me a couple of weeks ago. It quit while I was watching (powered itself off). Now, when I try to turn it on, it attempts to start (I hear a few on/off clicks of a relay and see a very quick screen flash) before it gives up and shows me 10 blinks of the red Power/Standby light. I've learned a lot from reading through this entire thread, so I decided to give it a go on my own before contacting you. I managed to find a copy of the Service Manual online (I'd be happy to share it with you if you don't have one) and learned that the 10 blinks for my TV means "ATSC-OVP error" - "Probable Cause: No 'DTL Module 5V' output (G1 board, G2 board)". I studied the schematics, but without any real diagnostic tools at my disposal, I made an educated guess that the G1 board was the culprit. I ordered a new board, put it in the set and tried it, but the symptoms were exactly the same. Now I've reverted to the old G1 board, and I'm at a loss for what my next step should be. I can order a G2 board, but I'm trying to avoid the shotgun approach (although it seems I've already started down that road). I'm concerned about the clicking relay... I don't understand what might be causing that (or if, perhaps, it's the relay itself that's bad - which is on the F Board). I'm wondering if you might have any ideas on what might be causing my problem. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. projects4joe on January 18, 2008 3:24 PM Larry Dillon said: Projects4joe, where would you like me to send it to? projects4joe@gmail.com Thanks! austinross on January 18, 2008 11:51 PM Larry: First off, let me say that you are the man. What a great post and it's great to see that you take the time out to help DIYers. OK, now to my question - I have a 5 year old SONY XBR KV-34XBR800 set. I'm getting the dreaded 7-flashes on the standby light. After downloading the service manual it looks like this is symptomatic of "Horizontal Deflection Stopped" Which according to the manual is:
Horizontal Defl ection Stopped Occurs when either: 1) a +B overcurrent is detected (IC5007), or 2) overheating is detected (Thermistor TH5002). Which according to the manual is: +B Overcurrent (OCP)* 2 times 2:0 or 2:1 H.OUT (Q5030) is shorted. (D Board) +B PWM (Q5003) is shorted. (D Board)

Power does not come on. Load on power line shorted. So it looks like my D-board is jacked up. I found a WEB site that sells D-Board repair kits: http://www.fixyourowntv.com/dboard.php Ever hear of these guys or use their stuff? I'm a EE so I'm not afraid to bust out the soldering iron. How painful would you estimate a D-board reword is? Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Larry Dillon on January 19, 2008 3:54 AM It is a stab in the dark. The flashing LED is not a foolproof fault. I have heard of peeps using these repair kits and it not fixing the problem. That's why there is no warranty on the kit, and you would be better off to take out the D board and shipping it to ptscorp.com and have it rebuilt for about 100 bucks or so. This will happen over and over. I tried pulling up the error log with no luck. Thank you for the help. During my wait for a response I checked some other sites and found someone had a similar problem and they replaced the balast and the lamp. Well being impatiant as I am I opened up my tv removed the lamp and noticed that there were screens on the top and bottom of the lamp assbly and a tube at the top of the lamp receptical. I assume that this is some air flow path. One of the screens was about 95% blocked with dust. I cleaned it and put it back together and yep it works (so far) I have a feeling I just saved myself $500 or so for a gram of dust SWEET!!! I still would like to know how to pull up the error log for my model tv and how to get a repair manual for my tv? Thanks for posting your thread Michael! I have the same model tv and had issues last September (6 blink code) - got taken by a local service repair shop, charged me $200 for a generic replacement lamp that was not the problem, then took me for another $100 for a $6 replacement fuse. So it is now 4 months later and my tv is acting very similar to yours, but picture for 5 seconds then no picture for 30 - 40 seconds. Pulled the generic lamp and it did not have the screens that you refered to. Got the original (BAD???) lamp from storage and it had the screens which were very clean, put it in and is working great! So for that, I thank you! To check the diagnostics menu, press (DISPLAY), release, (5), release, VOL (-), release, (POWER), release. This will show you the number of faults since it was last reset. To get into the other diagnostic screen, do the above sequence except press VOL (+) instead of (-). To reset the counts in the previous menu, press (8) then (ENT). Be sure to leave you tv off for at least 2 minutes between power cycles! I have the service manual for this, if you want. It explains the diagnostic menus. -Kevin JimmyB on January 21, 2008 7:16 AM Larry, I never received the manual for a Sony KP57HW40. Would you please send it to jimbonidie@telstart.net Thanks

concise on January 21, 2008 10:26 AM My Sony KP-61XBR300 is displaying the blinking codes. I found the Sony Service Manual at this site: http://www.servicemanuals.net/. The Service Manual (150 pages) contains detailed diagrams and descriptions of each circuit as well as schematics and component lists. The blinking codes are included. User and Service Manuals for many Sony products can be found here. The online download cost was $35.50 and was available immediately. This was a high quality PDF copy. TheDrew on January 21, 2008 3:56 PM I believe they probably are high quality... The one Larry sent me was high quality as well. I asked for a sm from another site and it was like three pages long and didn't make any sense. This one that Larry sent me is 96 pages long and very detialed. Thanks again!! I have the nine blink error code and was hoping someone could point me in a direction of what to check. I saw posts before like check IC###, IC###, and yada yada. What would be a good start here? Thanks! Larry Dillon on January 21, 2008 9:44 PM JimmyB, That manual was sent out to you. It must have been undelieverable or got put into a trash or bulk mailbox? I will certainly try to send it out again. klindoug on January 21, 2008 10:58 PM Larry, I would post this in an e-mail or PM to you, but I can't, so I will ask you here. If you have a service manual for the KP46WT-510 can you email it to me at: klindoug@yahoo.com ? I would appreciate it. Everything is going fine with my IC change-out. I just need to check resistance on some pico fuses and I'm not sure exactly which ones to test. I think I need to review Zap's instructions. What a great forum this is. I wouldn't have dreamed for a better source for help. Thanks for all that you guys do! mark peterson on January 22, 2008 1:01 AM Larry can You please send me the manual for a Sony KP57HW40 to markusssss@msn I left out the u last time but I am truly sorry .....and i do thank You for being so helpful to us in need Mark... ejake on January 25, 2008 4:55 PM Hey Larry, I have a KP57HW40 set. About a year ago I had problems with the curved lines on the blue CRT. I turned down the voltage control and got rid of them. Now, the blue CRT flashes after the set warms up. It began a month ago and was flashing intermittently. Last night, it began flashing regularly, then shut the set off, the standby light blinks 8 times. When I looked inside, their is a bulb type component on the board on the bottom of the CRT. It lights up when the CRT flashes, and one of the other bulb like components on the main board lights up too. After a while, the TV will come back on, or when I power it off, it will come back on, then it trips off again when it heats up. Does this mean the Blue CRT is now shot? Is it worth replacing the CRT if it's shot, or can I expect the other 2 to be going soon also? Mikeya11 on January 25, 2008 5:17 PM Larry Can you Please send me the Manual for Sony KP46WT500 I know you sent it to me already once but I must have deleted it Thanks Matkiels1@aol.com Mikey concise on January 26, 2008 12:45 PM My Sony KP-61XBR300 displayed the blinking codes. My service manual explained how to interpret: 1. Use the controller to power-down the TV 2. Press the Display button 3. Press the "5" button 4. Press the Volume "+" button 5. Press the Power button Along with your picture, a table appears showing the codes and a brief description and the number of times the code was recorded. Overvoltage conditons as well as screen adjustment (AKB - 5 blinks) conditions are listed Under the screen (front of set) I removed the screen speaker covers and then the middle covers to access the three (3) video projection tubes (RGB) and the 6 adjustment knobs mounted on a panel in front of the yoke assemblies. In my case, adjusting the blue screen (intensity) setting stopped the error blinking code. Note: Over tweeking causes the yoke to auto shutdown and you need to pwr down/up. There are many programmable adjustments that can be accessed in a service mode from your controller: 1. Use the controller to power-down the TV 2. Press the Display button 3. Press the "5" button 4. Press the Volume "-" button 5. Press the Power button 1 + 4, 2 + 5, 3 + 6 are navigation key pairs. 6 alone displays test patterns and 9 switches between rough and fine adjustments. See your service manual for more info. I found two copies online. Tinixsoft.com had a PDF download for $5. concise on January 26, 2008 12:47 PM Oops, typo on my last post. schizophonic on January 31, 2008 5:08 PM Hi Acquired my uncles Sony KDL-40V2000. Its currently blinking 4 times which we can see from. However trying to activate the dianostic screen is near than impossible. When powering down the TV, we follow the service manual buttons. But when pressing the power button, the green light turns on and then it goes in the 4 red blinking light situation. How should we get the service menu up? Also an authorised sony repaire store can take the TV in for 55 to be checked over, but how much do you think its going to cost for it to repair? Larry Dillon on February 1, 2008 7:34 AM Have you tried to replace the bulb yet? If the bulb is bad, the diagnostic screen will not come up.
