The ocean is calm and stunningly clear blue.
The engines are purring and the Captain and
crew are alert and on the lookout for Los Cabo’s
famous king of sportfishes – the striped marlin,
Tetrapturus audax . It is a day when even the
novice can look forward to becoming a true
“big game” angler in the style of Hemingway,
Zane Grey, or John Wayne. Situated at the
very southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, the Los
Cabos area consists of two towns: San Jose
de los Cabos and Cabo San Lucas. Posed
between the Pacific on the west and the Sea of
Cortez to the east Los Cabos offers predictably
great year around fishing for striped and blue
marlin along with sailfish, roosterfish, dorado,
yellowfin tuna, wahoo and a diverse variety of
other sport fishes. Indeed it is in the center
of a migratory route for striped marlin that has
recently been documented by a major tagging
effort initiated by The Billfish Foundation, an
international marine conservation organization
that focuses on billfish – marlins, sailfish,
spearfish and swordfish.
Today Cabo San Lucas is a prosperous and
thriving town offering an array of entertainment
and shopping attractions. But only thirty years
ago it was a small fishing village centered around
a cannery. Pioneer sportfishing advocate Luis
Bulnes Molleda once managed that cannery,
and from the day in 1955 he watched a striped pg.

small open 24 foot pangas to
large luxury sportfishing yachts
with air conditioning, lounges and
flat screen TVs there is a slot for
everyone looking to tackle a world
class billfish. It is a good idea to spring the extra
bucks to purchase some live bait before leaving
the marina. There is nothing like dropping a
live mackerel back to a lit up and hungry marlin.
While dorado and tunas are usually kept for
the table, marlins and sailfish are conservation
only species. Over the last decade, due to the
activities of The Billfish Foundation and local
conservation groups, catch-and release fishing
has become the norm for these fish. Want a
mount of that first catch? No problem, a photo
and estimated lengthy are all that is needed to
get an exact fiberglass replica from a variety of
taxidermists in Mexico or the U.S. Releasing a
great catch so that it can continue to spawn and
be caught again one day is a natural recycling
effort intended to assure that this center of sport
fishing excellence will continue to offer great
fishing opportunities for future generations of

San Francisquito’s turquoise bay is shallow, sandy
and secluded. To one side, bright red clams burrow
into the sand and, if you can spot their siphons at
60 feet, the clams can be gathered for the dinner
table.

Las Animas is a prime spot for SCUBA diving and
snorkeling. A small sea lion colony reigns over the
island’s rocky point, which is also a great place to
free dive and spearfish for lunchtime snapper.
Isla Santa Cruz
Isla Santa Cruz juts from the water in a massive
rock face, which is home to intrepid cactus, osprey
nests, watery caves and shady mornings.
El Rincón de los Burros
This island greets the shoreline with thousands of
round rocks, which the tide makes smoother every
day. Swim to the shore to admire the colorful stones,
some of which are made of granite or filled with
agate.
Pargo Cave
A SCUBA dive at the pargo cave, which lies about
60 feet below what appears to be open ocean, could
reveal 80-pound reef fish, bright coral and lobsters.
Isla San José
A visit to the mangroves at Isla San José showcases

highlights
Lovers Beach—Although water taxi is the
most common way of getting to the strip of
sand that straddles the Sea of Cortez and the
Pacific Ocean in Cabo San Lucas, ambitious
tourists can trek their way to Lovers Beach.
The hike requires some skill, owing to rocks
and steep slopes, but the end result is a re-
freshing dip in the clear waters of one of Cabo’s
best beaches.
Sierra de San Francisco—Located in cen-
tral Baja, this rocky mountain range, which
forms part of the El Vizcaino reserve is also
home to some of the most outstanding ancient
rock paintings in the world. The paintings, some
of which are between 700 ~ 2,100 years old
are well preserved due to the arid Baja climate
and the lack of a large local population. In order
to visit the rock paintings you must arrange a
guided excursion out of San Ignacio about 1
hour away.
Bahia Concepcion—South of Mulegé, north
of Loreto on Highway 1 you will find one of Mex-
ico’s most beautiful bays. Bahía Concepción is
approximately 26 miles long with crystal clear
waters and sandy beaches that are a delight for
campers, kayakers and snorkelers.

Playa de los Enamorados—Aunque la mejor
manera de llegar a esta estrecha extensión de
arena que toca los dos mares de Cabo San Lucas
es en panga, los visitantes aventureros pueden
caminar hasta la Playa de los Enamorados. La
excursión requiere de algo de habilidad, debido a
las rocas y las cuestas vertiginosas, pero al final
te espera un refrescante clavado en las aguas cla-
ras de una de las mejores playas de “Cabo”.
Sierra de San Francisco—Localizado en la
Baja central, forma parte de la reserva ecológi-
ca Vizcaíno y es el hogar de algunas de las pin-
turas rupestres más maravillosas del mundo, de
entre 700 a 2100 años de antigüedad. Su con-
servación ha sido posible gracias al clima árido
de la Baja y la ausencia del contacto humano.
Para visitar estas pinturas es necesario progra-
mar una excursión guiada desde San Ignacio, a
una de distancia.
Bahía Concepción—Al sur de Mulegé y nor-
te de Loreto, sobre la carretera 1, se encuentra
una de las bahías más bellas de México. Bahía
Concepción es aproximadamente 42 kms de lar-
go con aguas cristalinas y hermosas playas que
son un encanto para los campistas y aquellos que
buscan snorkelear y aventurarse en kayak.
