    Phantom loading connects the current and voltage coils of a wattmeter separately so that less power is consumed compared to direct loading. When phantom loading, no external load is actually connected so the wattmeter only measures the small magnetizing current. Low power factor wattmeters are used for no load testing because only magnetizing current flows, which is out of phase, resulting in a low power factor.
