Get to know your laptop

From the very beginning


The outside of the laptop

Lid Release Firewire port,


connect to a video
camera

CD/DVD Drive Power Socket

USB ports for connecting cameras, Modem and Ethernet ports for internet
printers and scanners

Headphone
ports

Connect to a monitor or datashow projector


Plugging in the power
Connect Power cord to computer power
socket

Connect the power lead to the Battery pack


Starting up your laptop
• Open the lid by
using your thumb to
push the button in
the front of the lid at
the front of the
laptop and lift the lid
• Press the Power
button and wait
Logging in
You may need to put in a
password on the next screen, click
in the box and type your password,
Press Return on the keyboard.

Track Pad (mouse)


When clicking and dragging
it is easier to use two
hands. Use your left hand to
hold the left click down and
your right hand to move
over the Track Pad.
The Desktop
Your screen may look
something like this. This
is called the Desktop.
At the bottom of your
screen is the Dock. This is
the launch pad for most of
your applications
The Desktop
Trash: when you delete anything it
goes here but will not disappear completely
until you go to Finder - Empty Trash

This is Safari, your access to the


Internet.
The Dock
Any files or folders that you have open will have a Black triangle
underneath them
Can you see these programmes?
• PowerPoint
• Word
• iPhoto Remember you can always close any
window by clicking on the first red button
• iMovie this will close the file, the minus button will
hide it and the plus button will make it
• iTunes smaller or bigger

• Mail
• Safari
• If you are not familiar with these programmes, practice
opening each one by clicking once on it. Close it by going to
‘name of the file’ - Quit (i.e. Word – Quit Word)
The Dock

• The Finder – click on this to


open your hardrive
• Widgets – clicking on this
brings up helpful programmes
like calculator
• iLife – iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto,
iDVD, Garageband
• System Preferences – make
changes to how your
computer runs
Word
Your screen should look something like this when you start
Word.
If you have only one toolbar at the top that means that you
will not be able to see all of the buttons available to you.
• Go to View – Toolbars
• Standard, Formatting, and Drawing should all be selected
• If they are not click on each one

• Finally you need to have your Tables and Borders toolbar.


Click on the Tables and Borders button on the
Standard Toolbar. Your new toolbar will appear and your
mouse pointer will turn into a pencil, click on the Draw
Table button on the new Tables and Borders Toolbar
and it will set your mouse pointer back to normal.

If your Tables and Borders toolbar looks like


this Click and drag on the bottom right hand
corner until all your buttons are on one line.
Word

• At the bottom left hand side of your screen


you will see 4 or 5 buttons
• The most important one is the Print
Layout View
• Make sure that this button is highlighted
by clicking on it

This is the best and most common page layout that you should
use in Word. If your page doesn’t look like it should i.e graphics are
missing, check that this button is highlighted.
Type on the page – Change Fonts,
Size and Style
• Select your work by clicking and dragging over
the words to be changed or hold down Ctrl – A to
select all of the text.
• Click on the arrow next to Times New Roman
and scroll down and select a font.

• Click on the arrow next to the 12 and select


a font size.
• Click on the to Bold, the to italicise and the
to underline.
Or go to File-Save in
Save this file the menu bar

• Click on the Save button


on the toolbar.
To save to Documents
Click on the Documents
button
• Then click on the folder
that you want to save in.
• Type in File Name
and then click Save.
Save to Memory Stick

• Insert Memory stick into USB


port
• Click on the Save button in
Word
• To save to Memory stick
select the disk icon
from the left hand pane in
the Dialogue box. Name the
file and click Save.
Find and Open Files
in Word or PowerPoint
• Go to File – Open

or click on the Open folder button

• Look at the name of the top of the


Dialogue box.
• In this example it says New for 99
• Double click on the File or folder that
you want.

Your files may be saved in the Documents folder


Click on the Documents button in the left hand pane
Double click on the file you want to open
Navigating
• Double click on the
Macintosh HD icon or the
Finder in the Dock
• Your window may look like
this with a Source panel on
the left hand side
• Click on the Documents
button to view your
documents
Finding Files in My Documents
• The following are the different
views you could have
• Click on this button on the View
panel
• You will be able to view all of the
files in your Hardrive.
• Try the other view buttons and
decide which one you like best.
Make a new folder

• Click on the Documents button


in the Source Panel
• Click on the Action drop down
menu and select New Folder
• A new folder will appear Do not
click, just type straight in a name
for the folder
• Hint: You can make folders
anywhere, on the desktop or
inside any other folders by going
Shift- Apple -N
• Close your Macintosh HD window
by clicking on the red circle
Organising documents
Move documents or folders into folders
• Click once on a document or a
folder and drag it into another folder

Delete a document or a folder


• Delete files by dragging them down into
the trash, which is on the Dock
• Empty the trash by going to Finder –
Empty Trash
Rename a folder or file
Rename a folder
• Click once on a folder or the name
• Click once again
• Type in a new name

Copy the folder


• Click once on a folder
• Press Apple D
• A duplicate will appear with the word
copy before it
Copy files to a CD and burn
• Insert a blank CD

• Click on OK
• The CD will appear on the desktop You can
name the CD by clicking once on the words
Untitled and then once again, type in a name
for your CD, it will replace the Untitled words.
• Double click on the CD
• Click on Documents in the Source panel, find
the documents you want to burn, click and drag
them down onto the CD icon in the Source
panel. Once all the documents or folders have
been dragged onto the CD icon, click on the
Burn button
• A new window will appear asking if you really
want to burn the CD, click Burn
• The CD will Burn, once it has finished you will
need to eject it, do this by either dragging to the
Trash or press the Eject button on your
keyboard.
Find your photos
• Go to the Desktop and click on the
iPhoto button on the dock
• Click on Library to see your
photos
• To download photos connect
camera through USB port,
turn on camera
• Click on import, when the
photos have finished
importing disconnect camera
Filmstrip
• If you are in
Filmstrip view you
can rotate photos if
they are not the
right way up
• Click on the photo
• Click on the rotate
button
Photo Slideshow
• Click on Library or an Album
• Go to File –New Slideshow (the new
slideshow folder will appear already named).
Or click on the Slideshow button

• Rearrange the photos by clicking and


dragging in the Photo Browser

Press Play
Music
• Click on the iTunes icon on the Dock and
then iTunes will open

• Your iTunes screen will look something like


this if you have music on it

• Click on a song and then press the Play


button to hear the music
Add music to iTunes
• Insert an audio CD
• The iTunes icon will start jumping in
the Dock and then iTunes will open
• Your iTunes screen will look something
like this
• If you are connected to the Internet,
iTunes will connect to a website that
will search its database and name your
songs
• If you don’t have internet you will need
to name each song by clicking on
‘untitled’ click once more and then
name them
• Click on the Import songs button to
import songs into iTunes
