6. The telescoping arm ABC (Figure 6.6) is used to provide an elevated platform for construction workers. The workers and the platform together have a mass of 240kg and have a combined center of gravity located directly above C. For the position when = 24, determine (a) the force exerted at B by the hydraulic cylinder BD, (b) the force exerted on the supporting carriage at A. (Ans.: FBD = 12.15kN, FA = 10.63N;35.7)

7. A 500kg concrete slab is supported by a chain and sling attached to the bucket of the frontend loader shown in Figure 6.7. The action of the bucket is controlled by two identical mechanisms, only one of which is shown. Knowing that the mechanism shown supports half of the 500kg slab, determine the force (a) in cylinder CD, (b) in cylinder FH. (Ans.: FCD = 7.68kN, FFH = 21.7kN)

9. The machine shown in Figure 6.9 is used for forming metal plates. It consists of two toggles ABC and DEF, which are operated by the hydraulic cylinder H. The toggles push the movable bar G forward, pressing the plate p into the cavity. If the force which the plate exerts on the head is P = 12kN, determine the force F in the hydraulic cylinder when = 30. (Given: a = 200mm) (Ans.: F = 6.93kN)

10. The nail cutter consists of the handle and the two cutting blades. Assuming the blades are pin connected at B and the surface at D is smooth, determine the normal force on the fingernail when a force of F = 5N is applied to the handles as shown in Figure 6.10. The pin AC slides through a smooth hole at A and is attached to the bottom member at C. (Given: a = 6mm, b = 36mm) (Ans.: FN = 26.25N)

11. The scotch-yoke mechanism shown in Figure 6.11 is used in a valve actuator. As fluid is pumped into the cylinder, the increased pressure drives the mechanism and applies a torque to the output shaft. This torque can be used to actuate (open and close) valves. At the instant shown, the pressure load on the piston is 300N. Determine the torque generated on the output shaft. The coefficient of friction between the follower pin and crosshead slot is 0.15.
