I Am Poetry Lesson

Objective Students will be able to follow a model to write a descriptive poem about themselves and create a podcast of their writing.
Grade Level Expectations: 2nd Grade Standard 1: Oral Expression and Listening Students will collaborate effectively as group members or leaders who listen actively and respectfully pose thoughtful questions, acknowledge the ideas of others, and contribute ideas to further the groups attainment of an objective Concepts and Skills Students Master: 1. Select and use applications effectively and productively Introduce lesson to students stating theyve written all types of poetry but they will write a poem about themselves Using I Am poem template, work together as a class creating one for the teacher Brainstorm ideas from class of what to say for each line

clearly outlining what is appropriate to write and what isnt Work through poem as a class, stopping to help others as necessary Revise and edit poems with peers Type final product in a Microsoft Publisher document and print (can add to a class poetry book or individual poetry book) Using Garage Band or any other recording device, have student sit with you and create podcast of their poem Combine all student recordings together for one class pod cast to post on class website

Differentiated Instructional Support

ILP/ELA:
Students can work with partner/parent/volunteer either in small groups or one on one to complete poem Provide additional explanation to concepts not understood by student to illicit an appropriate response Write student thoughts for them on rough draft if needed
