NEW YORK STATE SENATE OFFICE OF SENATOR MICHAEL GIANARIS

HURRICANE IRENE EMERGENCY AND EVACUATION PROCEDURES We will begin to see the effects of Hurricane Irene late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Mayor Bloomberg has issued a mandatory evacuation of Hurricane Evacuation Zone A. Those living within the Zone must be evacuated by 5 pm Saturday. You can check what Zone you are in by clicking here. On Sunday and immediately following the storm, try to stay out of city parks to avoid uprooted trees, falling branches and other dangerous conditions. Be sure to stock up on basic, essential supplies such as batteries, flashlights, water and food. The MTA will shut down all modes of transportation at noon on Saturday. If sustained winds reach 60 miles per hour, the George Washington Bridge, Tappen Zee Bridges, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority will also be closed. Below is a list of the 13 evacuation shelters in Queens. In case of an evacuation, go to the shelter closest to you or stay with a family member or friend living in a non-evacuation zone. Pets are allowed in the shelters. Anyone planning to use Access-a-Ride this weekend should do so today as this service may not be available Saturday or Sunday.
