Traffic Jam is one of the most irritating problems in Bangladesh.

Everyone feels it but none seems to think over this unhappy situation as prevails in Bangladesh. The bad effect of traffic jam can better be understood than described.

Define the situation: The peoples who live in the city are the daily sufferer of this problem. A distance of three to four kilometers can take about an hour to reach. Destinations like Gulisthan, Motijheel, Old Dhaka, Maghbazar, Malibagh, Gulshan, Banani and Dhanmondi are nightmares for commuters from any point in the city. Especially frustrating are the points Hotel Sonargaon crossing, the road in front of the Prime Ministers office, Maghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Khilghaon, Rampura, Elephant Road, Science Laboratory, Green Road, Jatrabari, Sayedabad, Mohakhali and old parts of the city mainly at Dholaikhal, Postagola, Bangshal, Chowkbazar and Imamganj. People miss important appointments, late for work, children and old people fall sick. Sometimes, w can see a blaring ambulance stuck in the middle of a traffic jam trying desperately to find a way. People lose their time on their way for nothing. Traffic jam is obstructing trade and commerce.

The heat released from the engines, especially the private cars that use air conditioners, increase the overall temperature of the city. Continued exposure to pollution from the streets during traffic jams, will have grave consequences in the future health of these people. The economy is losing out in millions because of traffic jams. Government officials estimate a loss of around Tk 15,000 crore annually because of traffic jams.

Reason behind Traffic Congestion: The main problems identified for the traffic jams are: Increase in the number of vehicles Poor traffic management system Rickshaws Illegal parking

Scarcity of parking spots Tendency to break the traffic law Dhaka is a mega city. More than twelve million people live here. Day by day the number is increasing and most part of Dhaka is badly affected by the population growth. More than 7 hundred thousand rickshaws ply the city road, but only 75 thousand have legal number. This huge number of rickshaws is creating traffic jam. From time to time attempts are made to reduce the number, but the initiative usually produces no results. The number of rickshaw pullers is huge. Almost there are no roads or street or lane free from traffic jam.

Traffic jam is obstructing trade and commerce. Illegal parking is another reason for traffic jam. Cars, trucks and other vehicles are parked almost everywhere. Faulty traffic signaling systems, inadequate manpower and narrow road spaces and overtaking tendency of drivers create pro-longed traffic congestions and intensify sufferings of commuters keeping people motionless as well as creating suffocating condition in the streets. Also there are bus terminals not authorized by the traffic department and drivers do not go by traffic rules. VIP protocol maintaining is another reason for frequent traffic jams in the streets and divider problem in the citys different important roads also causes congestion. Besides, illegal car parking, and unplanned road excavating on the same road by Water and Sewer Authority (WASA), Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA), telephone and telegraph agencies without any integration among them, is responsible for intolerable traffic jams. In any roundabout in Dhaka the plying CNG, ricksha, bus, etc form multiple lines. They do this to grab a tiny space out of sheer desperation. This obviously creates serious problems such as unnecessary traffic holdup. The traffic managers have failed to do anything about this problem and the situation is going from bad to worse day by day.

The increased number of vehicles is an alarming factor for the country. A recent statistics shows that each day, Dhaka city gets 2000 new vehicles. For these purposes, neither did Bangladesh government plan ahead, nor they are taking any significant measures now-a-days. As a result, more and more traffic jam is making the lives of normal people a living hell. Traffic management system of Bangladesh is still the ones that were used to be in the 80s. Therefore, the new methods of traffic management is not being applied properly. Rickshaws, however, are identified as one of the most common reason for traffic jams. The number of rickshaws is very much high

and they dont maintain any law whatsoever. However, you cannot eradicate them off the street either because they are one of the best ways of communication and the greenest vehicle you may find. Parkings in the country are horrible because there isnt enough space for parking. Most of the buildings of the country thought of having room for their works inside their buildings but never even concentrated on having a parking spot. Therefore, the parking areas chosen by these workers here are the roads itself.

Measurement should be taken to solute the problem: There are a lot of things to do in order to solve the problems. Traffic jams are in worst position in Bangladesh here and government should try every possible method to control the traffic jam. I have found some possible method of controlling traffic jam by searching on various research paper and expert opinions. These are like below 1. As Dhaka has large amount of peoples; it needs lots of vehicles to carry the. So if the underground railway is started; it is then possible to convey most of the peoples in just one rail. That will not only reduce the numbers of cars to convey peoples but also give peoples the opportunity to reach their destinations at proper time. 2. Car parking on the main road should have to be prohibited. 3. Local Bus should be stopped at certain Bus Stoppage. 4. Government should have to make Flyover at every congested point of different roads of Dhaka. 5. Traffic Police should have to be trained up 6. Polices should have to be strict on each traffic laws enforcement. 7. Giving license to the private car should be very limited. On the other side, number of public buses should be increased. 8. Any kind of peoples congestion, meeting, symposium, or seminar should be prohibited in the middle of road. Hartal should legally be disallowed. 9. Each road must have separate lanes. Different type of vehicles will run on the different lanes. Up and Down bus lines should be separate.

10. If none of the above mentioned methods works; the government should hire traffic controlling expert from the abroad. Japan had the traffic jam problems long ago, but today they are self-controlled. Out government should use the traffic controlling methods from Japan.

The ways to get out of this situation will cost money, well-thought traffic management system and organization. Money will be needed to improve the infrastructure of the country. It will be needed to build new flyovers, underground railways etc. to help the conditions of the country. A well planned traffic management system can help city by not having unwanted traffic jams. Since rickshaws cannot be eradicated, they must be wellorganized so that they dont keep any hand on traffic jam enhancements. If the government takes and proper initiatives, they can get rid of traffic jams more easily they think they can. Its just a matter of time that the city will be flourished with an organized traffic-jam free road.
