Bengal (Vanga) theory


Many clain that the land of Suvarnabhumi was actually in central Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent. In some Jain texts, it is mentioned that merchants of Anga region regularly sailed to a distant land called suvarnabhumi and it is a fact that Bengal is near to the ancient Anga region of Bihar and is well connected with rivers and the bay of Bengal. Bengal had in ancient times an excellent navy and had a good trading relationship with Dravidian kingdoms, Sri Lanka, Java, Sumatra and Indonesia (A Sri Lankan buddhist king named Vijaya Simha was from Bengal region). Moreover, Bengal is very much associated with gold- The soil of Bengal region is golden color (gangetic alluvial), golden harvest(rice), golden fruits(mangoes), golden minerals (gold and clay) and yellow skinned people. This region was referred to in ancient Sanskrit texts as 'GaudDesh'(Golden/Radiant land). During Mughal dynasty, there existed a very rich trading town called 'Sonargaon'(Golden village), connected to North India by the Grand trunk road. Even today, Bengali people informally refer to their land as 'Sonar Bangla'(Golden Bengal)- the national anthem of Bangladesh being 'amar sonar Bangla...'.
