INTRODUCTION

Fieldwork in social work education refers to training and education. The training is respective skill oriented and education is imparted with broad perspectives. In consists of accumulating knowledge in different situations. It is a dynamic process of observing, amassing and implementing creative and innovative ideas. Moreover, it fosters the development of intellectual and emotional processes and attitudes. This training started as field instruction with apprenticeship in social agencies. The tasks given to trainees were similar to those craftsmen and there was dichotomy between administrative and non-administrative skills. fieldwork is considered to be learning through doing. Therefore,

The idea if Dewey, i.e., learning through doing has had a primary influence in the concept of fieldwork. It is an integrating factor acting as a balancing force between the two companions of fieldwork, which has crucial significance in the training of social work. It blends theory with practice combines philosophy with action, integrates the understanding about peoples with methods of helping them. The techniques drew heavily on scientific knowledge about people and social phenomena. It is functional and technical in nature and foster learning in students. Moreover, it is an integrated approach, which goes concurrently with the classroom teaching process.

Field work programme provides an opportunity to students to apply their theoretical knowledge taught in the class room appropriately in different practical situations. Similarly, it serves as a social laboratory, wherein a student tests his theoretical knowledge in practical situations and develops the skills for social living.

It is a way to transform knowledge through certain skills and techniques into action. The significance of field work training in social work is consequential because of its nature of dealing with problems practically. Mere class room lectures are not enough to comprehend practical situations, in professional education. It was this fact which promoted Annette Garrett to write, An extensive well planned field work programme is inevitable. It becomes very important in dealing with the dynamics of the human personality in the context of an individuals needs. It is evident that field work varies in quality and quantity. It is imparted under supervision and guidance of trained and experienced person(s) in social work. Therefore, it is seen as a two-way process. The student is helped through social work supervision, so that he can work in a complex, intricate and composite social environment. In simple words it a can be said that theory without practice is empty and practice without theory is meaningless.

The trainee Ms. C. Chellam of I MSW was placed in Gramium Voluntary Organization Kulithalai, Karur (Dt).The trainee was assigned the task of procuring practical training in the community development settings. The agency is a governmental organization serving the rural community. The trainee was privileged to be placed in such an agency where there is a good scope for learning and sharpening the skills in various projects.

OBJECTIVES OF FIELD WORK Social Work is Professional help rendered to a person, group or community through professional techniques which involves study & understanding of human behavior needs & potentialities.

The Process by which the efforts of the people themselves are combined with those of the Government authorities to improve their socio economic and cultural condition of the community to integrate these communities into the life of nation in order to enable them to contribute fully to National Progress.

Social work is a professional education aimed at helping students to acquire a deep knowledge of theory and techniques, of achieving social work objectives and goals.

The major objectives of field work are as under: To develop professional skills through practical learning, apply acquired knowledge in the fields. To develop the skill for solving the problems in micro level (individual, families, groups and communities) To provide concurrent opportunity for the integration of class room learning, in field practice and vice versa. To develop the skills required for professional practice at a particular level of training. To objective develop professional attitudes involving impartiality and nonjudgmental attitudes. To develop professional values and commitments. To develop an awareness of self and ones professional ideas.

AGENCY PROFILE The Gramium Non- Voluntary organization was started in 1991 at Kanakapillaiyur village, Krishanrayapuram Tk. Karur.Dt., registered in under the Indian Trust Act. I have pleasure to present GRAMIUM Non Voluntary Organization got 2nd place in Tamilnadu Best Anti Tobacco Organization Award for 2006. Let begin with a very happy note. The Bharathi Panchayat Level Federation of Thondamanginam and Syambu SHG of Poyyamani promoted by Gramium Won Manimegalai and District best SHG award respectively. Here is a brief account of the activities. OBJECTIVES OF GRAMIUM 1. To promote the medical and educational interests and all round development of socially, economically and educationally downtrodden people. 2. To help villagers to form their own organizations to work for their development. 3. To give leadership and skills training to the villagers. 4. To assist small, marginal farmers and landless workers to increase their standard of living. 5. To establish health centers, training centers and demonstration farms for the benefit of the rural community. 6. To provide education on prohibition, atrocities against worm, health and family welfare, national integration and the eradication of the caste system 7. To strive for the overall development of women and children

I. Promotion & Development of self help group Gramium has been promoting women SHGs and imparting training to the members. Trainings were conducted separately for the members and the Animators and Representatives of each group. In addition, Entrepreneurship Development Training (EDT) was organized for them. This enabled them to learn important aspects of entrepreneurship like characteristics of entrepreneurship, importance of enterprises, market study, quality control, account keeping etc., before starting the new ventures. For those who had decided on the enterprises, Vocational Training Programmes (VTPs) related to the respective enterprise were organized

The Soap, Phenyl and Washing powder preparation training included a 2 day practical training. The other trainees were taken on an exposure visit to the GRAMIUMs model farm at Kanakapilliyur to learn more about the turkey, rabbit etc., IV. SKILL TRAINING During the year, training in soft toy production and jute and Rexine bag making were given for 60 rural poor girls. Out of them 15 started manufacturing these articles commercially earning decent incomes. V.MODEL FARM A model farm has been established with the twin purposes of agriculture and allied activities promotion ad demonstration as part of training. Quail, turkey, pigeon, duck, guinea pig and rabbit rearing units have been set up here. In additional skill training visit the farm and see for themselves all these and get educated and motivated. It is proposed to expand this to a well equipped training centre.

VI. AWARENESS GENERATION PROGRAMMES

GRAMIUM has organized awareness generation camps on various subjects periodically in order to equip the target people.

A.ORGANIC FARMING To cut the cost of cultivation to bring back the abandoned lands for cultivation, to get rid of various diseases and to harvest harmless, health giving produce and to arrest pollution organic farming is being encouraged by Gramium. Hence a one day awareness training on Organic farming was conducted both at Thalaiyaripatty Training Cnetre by Mr. Rajasundaram, a graduate in Agriculture well versed in organic farming. 2000 participants were benefited through the programme. B. AIDS There were reports of AIDS afflicted and HIV positive persons from the villages in the districts of Karur and Dindugal. There were the stigma and wrong notion about the cause of the pandemic among the communities. Therefore to make them aware of the true picture of the disease and the need to treat the infected persons with sympathy and help in their rehabilitation were discussed in an awareness camp conducted. The participants were the representatives of the PLFs (Panchayat Level Federations). It is expected that they disseminate what all they learnt to the others so that every one could take preventive measures. HIV AIDS RELATED PROGRAMME; A. VCTC (Voluntary Counselling testing Centre) B. Health Centers C. Targeted Intervention among core Groups (FSW, MSM, IDU). D. Community Based care and support progrmme for PLHA and CAA, CIA in Karur and Dindugal Districts E. v Psychiatric awareness camp v Awareness camp for visually handicapped v Awareness camp on the importance of iodized salt v Awareness on consumerism VII CHILD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES A. Foster Children Programme Living without parents or with one parent and that too in poor families in many ways affects the growth of children. They are not able to get their basic needs fulfilled and majority of them are denied their right to education. VENUS continues to take care of the 26 adopted children. In this noble task some individuals are extending help for their education and health. B. Non-Formal Education (NFE) GRAMIUM conducted NFE in 5 villages for the dropouts and child workers who are illiterates. NFE gave them hope. Since last year, through the NFE classes they learn the 3 Rs of reading, writing and arithmetic. For the illiterates, it is a new experience and for the drop outs it is reliving the experience. 100 such children happily learn their lessons. Some of them will be joining regular school soon. D. Evening Coaching Classes Coaching classes are conducted in the evening after the school hours. The youth of the 5 villages where the classes are conducted take keen interest in the programme. They assist the teachers and even conduct classes. The children now score more marks. Their progress is discussed with the school teachers. The latter appreciate very much the effort taken in the coaching classes to improve their performance. The SHGs also are very much impressed. The SHGs are prepared to support the coaching classes themselves with the youth who extend all help. This is in keeping with the concept of sustainability after withdrawal of external support. Probably this programme will be run by the SHGs from the next year.

VIII. HEALTH AND SANITATION A. Total Sanitation Campaign Venus continued to help the rural families to construct low cost sanitary toilets under the Total Sanitation Campaign in 19 Panchayats at Kulithalai and 20 in Thogamalai block. Totally 548 toilets were constructed up to the ground level with the subsidy of Rs. 500/- each. 78 awareness generation camps (2 camps in each Panchayat) were conducted during this year in Thogamalai Block to motivate the beneficiaries to construct toilets and to provide clarity on health and sanitation. The following topic were dealt with in the programme. o Hygienic handling of drinking water o Personal hygiene o Safe disposal of human excreta o Food hygiene o Animal and solid waste disposal o Liquid waste disposal o Environmental hygiene Similarly 49 cultural programmes were conducted in Thogamalai block in the respective Panchayats covering the same topics. For further motivation the harvest festival of pongal was celebrated as Health Pongal in 4 blocks focusing on sanitation. 3 SHGs in Kulithalai block maintain public toilets. In Innungur Panchayat, the Grama Sabha (Village General Body Meet) passed a resolution banning open air defecation in the entire Panchayat. Thus the rural population is gradually becoming health conscious. Since there is a section of people who are yet to use the toilets, the staff participated in an user group training on toilet usage which helped them to educate and motivate the village communities.

B. Nutrition and Child care During the year five 2 day training on nutrition, balanced diet and child care such camps were organised, 2 at Kulithalai block and Krishnarapuram block. In these camps

the preparation of different kinds of nutritious food with the locally available grains, grams and vegetables were demonstrated. Also demonstration was organised to prepare nutritious powder with locally available grains for children. A total of 325 mothers participated in the camps. C. Community Health Venus continued its interventions in the area of health by organizing health awareness camps and nutrition demonstration camps. The staff helped the government authorities in organizing the Pulse Polio campaign. Under the RCH (Reproductive Child Health) programme, camps were conducted to generate awareness on anemia. This was important as many children were malnourished. During this year, sanitation awareness programmes were conducted to impress upon the participants the need to promote sanitation in the villages and to observe personal, food, water and environmental hygiene. They were exhorted to construct and use sanitary toilets. D. FAMILY COUNSELLING There are numerous confusions disputes, misunderstandings and mistrusts which all lead to tension, hatred, unhappiness and disgust and further to murder, suicide, torture or separation in the families. The best service is to prevent these by counseling. Hence a programme of family counseling was carried out during the reporting period. A Family Counselling Centre with a Counsellor was established for this purpose in Karur with the financial assistance of State Social Welfare Board.

E. WORLD WOMENS DAY World Womens Day was celebrated in Kulithalai and K.R.Puram blocks by the SHGs in association with Mahalir Thittam. Various competitions and sports and games were conducted to bring out the talents of women. In the public speaking competition the women vied with one another in articulating the position, problems and potentials of women. Then speakers from various fields shared their experience and expertise in women empowerment. Awards were presented to the Best SHG (Syambu Poyyamani village), Best

PLF (Panchayat Level Federation) and Best bank (which lent maximum credits to the SHGs). Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions, games and sports. The SHGs made all the arrangements for the function at the two places.

F. WORLD WATER DAY Water shortage on one side and pollution on the other side threaten people everywhere. The situation is worse in the villages due to open defecation and unhygienic living conditions. But the village communities are not aware of any of these. Therefore, to generate awareness on the gravity of the situation and to motivate them to rectify it, World Water Day was celebrated on 30.3.2004. Competent speakers provided necessary inputs. There was a debate on the role of individuals and the community in promoting health and hygiene. XIV. CAPACITY BUILDING With the growth of GRAMIUM there was an obvious need to see that the staff were equipped through training to improve their capacity. In order to encourage, create self confidence and to bring out their hidden talents and capabilities, GRAMIUM used to conduct regular meetings and trainings to the staff. Because of all these, they are discharging their responsibilities better, conducting trainings for the SHG members and leaders, imparting training to the target population of other NGOs and staging cultural programmes in the target villages and also for outsiders like police department.

HISTORY OF THE AGENCY The institutions humble beginnings to the year 1977 when it was first started in a small hut in the called Khajamalai, Trichy-23 under the careful and caring nurture hand of its founder the late Mrs. Sheerin Hasrat whose tireless efforts and total dedication made it the Numero Uno service Organization in the district. It became affiliated to the All India Womens Conference in the year 1978. Later in 1989 it was registered as a public trust according to resolution passed in a meeting of the organization and emerged the KLA Trust. After having served the community for more then 25 years now in varied areas like health, education and socio economic development of the organization has taken vast inroads into almost all areas of human existence and has contributed its share to the cause of multifaceted and total community development scheme in this part of country. We now have around 25 composition of the Trust.

THE VISION To recognize the inherent capacities existing among the marginalized and supporting and building on them to herald the beginning of a new life here people can make their own choices. THE MISSION To overcome economic, legal, social and gender based inequalities and facilitate the process of People gaining control over their lives. DE-ADDICTION CUM REHABILITATION CENTRE: The centre, aided by ministry of welfare was instituted in the year 1990 and since then it has been rendering yeoman service in the treatment of alcohol and drug dependants. Activities include identifying and motivation alcohol and drug dependants and providing medical and psycho-social intervention model of treatment in a center based approach. A holistic intervention programme is offered which includes medical management, psychotherapeutic intervention, group theraphy, family therapy, follow up treatment and affiliation with AA-Alcoholics anonymous a self help group for recovered addicts.

IDENTIFICATION AND SCREENING OF ADDICTS The centre conducts awareness programmes in different community settings through which our counselors and social workers identify and screen the screen the addicts and motivate them for treatment. Besides these our social workers undertake door to door campaigns both in rural and urban areas to identify and screen the addicts. TREATMENT PROCESS MEDICAL MANAGEMENT If the patient who has all along been an addict, suddenly stops taking alcohol or Drugs. He will experience many unpleasant symptoms like tremors fits .etc. These are called withdrawal symptoms. Medical treatment is given so that he will not suffer form a severe withdrawal this part of the treatment is called detoxication,. During detoxication specially trained physicians and nursing staff will be available to minis the discomfort and suffering of the patient. PSYCHOLOGICAL TREARTMENT This treatment immediately follows detoxification. Psychological treatment is given not only for the benefit of he patient but also for his family members. As for the patient help and support is provided to lea a comfortable life without alcohol/drugs. Guidance is also given to make improvements in his life style. The treatment includes individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy, recreational therapy, educative lectures etc.

FOLLOW UP: Regular follow up is maintained for a period of 2years during which time the patient is put on a course of ant abuse. Local patients are asked to report every 15days and others are asked to report once in every month. Regular follow up helps in keeping the treated patients under constant watch and enables effective post-treatment management. ALCOHOLIC ANONYMOUS These are self help groups formed by recovering and recovered alcoholics. These are fellowships of people who share their experience and solve their common problems. Our Alcoholic anonymous Group was forms in the year 1992 and since then regular meetings have been held till date where members come together share experience attended lectures and re educative sessions and resolve to help others in the process of recovery. AWARENESS AND OUT REACH ACTIVITY: Our Awareness generation campaigns are held on a regular basis in various community settings from Industries, Educational Institutions, rural areas and slums etc. STATISTICS So far, 3970 patients have undergone treatment in our centre. The out of the patients is 340.he centre is gaining wide popularity and is being recognized as one of the frontline institutions in the treatment of alcohol and substance abuse. AIDS PREVENTION AND INERVENTION: AIDS PREVENTION AND CONTROL PROJECT is administered by APAC and VOLUNTARY HEALTH SERVICES (VHS), Chennai with financial assistance from UNITED STATES AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL

DEVELOPMENT (USAID) under bilateral agreement with the government of India. The association embarked on project at Karur, a town about 78 Kms North West of Trichirapalli, In October 1996. The Project involves counseling patients with sexually transmitted diseases STD ensuring complete treatment and condom promotion along with peer education. The project is situated at Karur and operates on the Salem Madurai National Highway 7 and on the national Highway 67 that connects Coimbatore to Trichirapalli and targets truckers consisting of drivers and cleaners, commercial sex workers and allied group trucking industry. APAC works towards controlling and preventing the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS in Tamilnadu, INDIA. And it supports NGOs to implement targeted intervention programmes among various high-risk population groups. KLA with the assistance of APAC, implements the Prevention along the Highway Project and targeted intervention among the Karur district. KLA works towards the reduction of sexual transmission of HIV / AIDS among the slum population through this intervention. It has been working with the population of 75,000 living in sixty slums. The project mainly targets the men and women in the reproductive age group, male and female youths (17+unmarried and male and female adolescents KLA slum intervention project is supported by AIDS prevention and control project (APAC) voluntary health services (VHS) Chennai, with financial assistance from the United States agency for international development (USAID) GOAL To prevent and control the sexual transmission of STD / HIV / AIDS in the high-risk groups in particular and all others in general, Prevention along the Highway through multipronged approach with full participation of community. OBJECTIVES To increase the knowledge of slum population on STD / HIV / AIDS

To promote condom usage among Prevention along the Highway population

 To identify refer and counsel STD cases To sensitize the community on the need for caring the people living with HIv / AIDS To capacitate the community to help the PLWAs in living without any stigma and discrimination. To create an enabling environment at the community level which would facilitate the effective implementation of the HIV / AIDS prevention and care programmes Prevention along the Highway intervention project is supported by AIDS prevention and control project (APAC) Voluntary Health services (VHS) Chennai, with financial assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) STRATEGIES BEHAVIOUR CHANGE COMMUNICATION STD REFERRAL SERVICES CONDOM PROMOTION ADVOCACY ACTIVITES AN OVERVIEW The staff team regularly visits the target community to educate them on STD / HIV / AIDS and demonstrate correct condom usage. During the evenings, regular groups meetings have been organized by the staff. The volunteers play a key role in mobilizing the target group to attend the meetings. They also attend all the group meetings organized in the respective area. Behaviour change communication is the key strategy adopted for Prevention along the Highway the intervention project. And the core of the BCC is constituted by peer education. Peer educators from various sub-population groups are the major links for projects to reach the target population. The capacitated peer educators in bringing behaviour change among their peer groups play key role and they serve as

a major serve as a major link between the community and the project. They do one to one interaction and group meetings for their peer groups. They do STD identification, referral services, and IEC display and condom distributions. Victims of STDs are identified in the group meetings and in one to one interaction by the staff team and the peer educators through the symptoms expressed and they are referred for the treatment. The group meetings facilitate the participants to express free their problems and also refer their neighbors. And the project staff has a good rapport with government hospital and the corporation health posts, which help the community to take treatment immediately. The capacitated and trained counselors are available at the project counseling centers and at corporation health posts wherein they offer counseling to the clients from the community. Trainings are being organized with the assistance of APAC for the health care provides to ensure the quality STD care to the target community. KLA intervention has facilitated the community to get desensitized on various aspects like use of condoms not to avoid pregnancy alone but to prevent HIV / AIDS. Availability of priced condoms in the non-traditional outlets like grocery shops, petty shops, and saloons and in public toilets increases the condom usage among the target audience and it ensures the accessibility of the community The volunteers identified educate the community through interpersonal communications on HIV / AIDS and they distribute IEC materials like flip charts, condom flyers, folders, and other materials provided by APAC. The volunteers also take active part in BCC events like street plays. Community co-operation is well received as in the absence of any common lace to conduct the meeting their living space is offered. The staff has established good rapport with the community and the intervention centers are mostly identified with the help of community members.

FAMILY CONSELLING CENTRE: Womens Micro Credit Self Help Groups. The family counseling center was started in October 1986 with financial assistance from the Central Social welfare Board New Delhi. Two full time counselors serve the people who are need of counseling and guidance. The center caters to all sorts of problems and probable causes for family disharmony and caters to the specific needs of each category of people and offers specialized counseling, stress couselling, suicide prevention etc. WOMENS MICRO CREDIT SELF HELP GROUPS. Micro credit schemes seem to have a marked impact on the socio economics development of the rural population. This is a concept which has recently caught on what with several such experiments especially proving to be successful especially with women folk. OTHER PROGRAMMES: P.G. REASON FOR REFERRAL: The client Perumal is deficiency as well as anemic. Due to these reasons, the client was not to consented nutrition problem and cant even walk the excellent activities. Properly he is very thin and weak. CASE HISTORY: When Perumal was a small child, he was affected by fever 14 days. Due to this he became very weak and his hearing wad affected. He was not able to hear properly after that his father married again and the step mother did not pay much attention to the health of the boy. GOAL INTERVENTION: To make the client to understand the importance of education. To help the client to eat nutritious food and avoid eating unhygienic food products. COUNSULLING: The caseworker provided counseling to the clients family members. The case worker explained importance of education and food and nutrition. The family members were emotionally distributed by their sons problems. DIANGOSTIC: The case worker, according to the teacher advise as well as the clients annual status conditions and on the bans of performance of the client the case worker diagostined the client is very economic and psychological upset and as he was not able to receive love and step mother.
