ECOTOURISM

---

JAFARIs FOUR PLATFORMS BASIS IN NATURE

JAFARI (1989,2001)
1950s/ 1960s ADVOCACY PLATFORM - Tourism was widely regarded as an ideal activity that resulted in many positive consequences for destinations and few negative consequences. 1970s CAUTIONARY PLATFORM - Came into play when the negative consequences of laissez-faire mass tourism growth became increasingly evident especially in developing countries. This platform argues that tourism eventually results in negative consequences for destinations unless careful regulations are put into place.

JAFARI (1989,2001)
1980s ADAPTANCY PLATFORM - Maintained the same left-wing ideological position as that of the cautionary platform, but distinguishes itself from its efforts to propose and implement tourism options that would supposedly be better suited to bringing about positive outcomes for a destination. 1990s KNOWLEDGE BASED PLATFORM - A more objective and holistic approach recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of all types of tourism modes. Emergence of sustainable development paradigm.
