Much information that speaker shares orally is LOST because of Listeners poor listening habits. Listening efficiency is no better than 25-30 % (Studies).

Listening is a NEGLECTED STUDY in schools & colleges even though in business world, it is considered a SIGNIFICANT PART of a managers COMMUNICATION SKILLS.

PREJUDICE AGAINST THE SPEAKER: 1
Can one maintain attention when speakers position, attitude or belief is entirely contrary to your own?

Noisy fans, poor lighting, distracting background music, overheated or cold rooms etc

THINKING SPEED:

Good speakers speak @ 80-160 words/ min, people have capacity to think @ up to 800 words/min. When audience is not processing speakers words, focused elsewhere, soon would be off & far away from words of speaker- MISSING SOME IMPORTANT POINTS.

FAULTS IN LISTENING- CAUSES
PREMATURE EVALUATION: 4
Our thinking speed OUTSPACES the speakers rate of speech. One arrives at the concluding thought quickly, often quite different from what speaker intended.

SEMANTIC STERIOTYPES: Internal reaction words vary from person to 5


person and are influenced by individual feelings, attitudes, biases etc. carried inside oneself. One tunes out the speaker coz A WORD annoys us & keep hammering in brain that effective listening gets impaired.

DELIVERY:
A monotone speakers can readily put listeners to sleep or cause them to lose interest.

1. 2 BE PREPARED. Before attending, try to learn something about speaker, topic, audience etc. ACCENT THE POSITIVE. Do it with +ve attitude LISTEN TO UNDESRTAND, NOT REFUTE ( ) Respect point of view of speaker if you disagree. Dont allow personal biases & attitude towards speakers /view influence your listening to the message. FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION. Towards speaker only. CONCENTRATE ON CONTEXT. Construct mental outline
of where speaker is going & listen for idea progression.

6 TAKE NOTES. Jot down ideas/incomplete sentences/ 7

words. Help eventually when recalling what speaker said.

CURB THE IMPULSE TO INTERRUPT. Listen attentively

until speaker invites questions. E.g., interviews, conferences,
