Objective: To determine the California Bearing Ratio of the subgrade soil. Equipment: I. II. III. IV. V. VI. VII. Sieves of size 20mm. Loading machine. Mould. Surcharge weights of 4 kg. Spacer disc. Dial gauges Penetration pluger.

Procedures: Specimen Preparation. 1. Take about 5.5kg of soil sample passing through 20mm sieve. 2. Add water to the soils in the required quantity and mix together the soil and water uniformly. Then, divide into five portions. 3. Clamp the mould aong with the extension collar to the base plate. 4. Place the coarse filter paper on the top of the spacer disc. 5. Pour first portion of soil-water mix in the mould. 6. Give 62 blows with the rammer weighing 4.5 kg dropping through 450 mm in 5 layers evenly spread on the surface. 7. Scratch the top layer of compacted surface. Repeat steps 5 to 7 in similar fashion for the other four portions of soil. Fill in the mould completely in five layers. 8. Remove the extension collar and trim off the excess soil by straight edge.

9. Remove the base plate, spacer disc and the filter paper and note down the weight of mould and compacted specimen. Penetration test. 1. Invert the mould containing compacted soil and clamp it to the base plate. 2. Place the mould containing the specimen, with the base plate in position , on the testing machine. 3. Bring the penetration plunger in contact with the soil surface and apply a load of 4 kg so that full contact between soil and plunger is established. This should be taken as zero loads. 4. Set the reading of dial gauges to zero. 5. Switch on the motor, and as the penetration proceeds record the load ring dial reading at 0.25 mm interval of the penetration dial gauge. Record the load at penetration of 0,0.25,0.5.0.75 ... until 6mm. Stop the machine. 6. Take off the mould from the machine, remove the tested sample from the mould and clean the mould. 7. Collect about 20 to 50 kg of soil to determine the water content.

Analysis of results:

From this experiment, we obtain that the Particle Density for sample no.1 is 1.711 (Mg/ m 3 ) , second sample is 1.564 (Mg/ m 3 ) and the third sample is 1.509 (Mg/ m 3 ). The Average Particle Density is 1.595 (Mg/ m 3 ).

Discussion:
From the equation; Particle Density, s = (m2 m1) / (m4 m1) (m3 m2) We can use this equation to get the particle density of soil and the result be greater than 1 Mg/m3 in order to obey the fact of water content. If the data is less than 1Mg/m3, the soil put into density bottle is too little and has an error during the experiment.

Conclusion:
As conclusion, we have achive the objective of this experiment which is determine the specific gravity of the soil using the density bottle. The average particle density is more than 1 Mg/m3 can be considered as data.
