Annual Review of Sociology

About the journal The Annual Review of Sociology was first published in 1975 by the Annual Reviews organisation. Unlike many other journals, the Review generally does not accept unsolicited article submissions. Instead, it chooses to invite established Sociologists to write article in the annual publication. Hence, there is a greater degree of control over the contributors to the journal, ensuring the quality of the articles published in the Review. Journal scope The Review covers a broad range of topics in every publication. Examples of categories usually included in each issue include: Theory and Methods, Social Processes, Institutions and Culture, Formal Organisations, Political and Economic Sociology, Differentiation and Stratification, and Individual and Society. Other topics which are sometimes but not always covered include: Demography, Policy, Sociology and World regions, Historical Sociology along with Urban and Racial Community Sociology. Journal significance The Review is very highly regarded by the scholarly community, as can be seen by the high number of citations of articles published in the Review. One particular article published in 1998 has been cited 970 times as at 2010. The high number of citations underlines the quality of the articles. Students are thus encouraged to read and cite (where appropriate) the articles from the Review in their term papers. Articles published also tend to be reviews of the history of research in a particular area of Sociology, sometimes over a period of decades. Such a historical coverage usually means the bibliography for each individual article tends to be very extensive. The bibliography is thus likely to be of special interest to students wishing to read further on important works in a particular field of study. Journal coverage and publishing frequency The Review is published annually. NTU has electronic access to all issues of the Review via the electronic journals page. 1975 to present Annual Reviews site
