(cooling tower calculations) A tray dryer receives 100 m3 /min hot air at 90ºC
with a humidity of 0.02 kg moisture per kg dry air at 1 atm pressure. The air
leaves the dryer at 50ºC. A part of this air is recirculated after mixing with fresh
air (dry- bulb temperature 27ºC; wet- bulb temperature 20ºC) and heating in a
steam heater to 90ºC. If 5% of the heat supplied by condensing steam in the air
heater is lost, calculate the rate of condensation of steam. The steam is saturated
at 5 kg/cm2 gauge. It may be assumed that humidification and cooling of the air
within the dryer follows the adiabatic saturation line. Heat of condensation of
steam at 5 kg/cm2 gauge is 2080 kJ/kg.

a) A horizontal spray chamber with recirculated water is used for adiabatic
humidification and cooling of air. The active part of the chamber is 2 m long
and has a cross section of 2 m2. With an airflow rate of 3.5 m3/seg at a dry-bulb
temperature of 338 K and Y’= 0.017 kg water/kg dry air, the air is cooled and
humidified to a dry-bulb temperature of 315 K. If a duplicate spray chamber
operated in the same manner were to be added in series with the existing
chamber, what outlet conditions would be expected for the air?
b) Calculate the make-up water flow rate.

Ejercicio 6
Warm, moist air is being cooled and dehumidified in a packed tower at 1 atm
by countercurrent contact whit cold water. The air enters at a rate of 2000 lb dry
air/ (hr)(ft)2 and with wet- and dry-bulb temperatures of 115°F and 135°F. It
leaves with wet-bulb temperature of 85°F. The water enters the top of the
column at the temperature of 65°F and a flow rate of 1.5 times the minimum
operable value. Measurements at these flow rates on reduced heights of the
same packing (such that the outlet air was unsaturated) permitted the
evaluation of -hLa/(k*GaMBP) as -4.
Calculate:
a. The water flow rate.
b. The water- outlet temperature.
c. The outlet dry-bulb temperature and humidity of the air.
d. The water removed from the air stream per 1000 lb of dry air.
e. The NtG.

Ejercicio 10
(Effect of air flow rate on cooling tower performance) A cooling tower cools
227 m3/h of water from 314 ºK to 306 ºK using a countercurrent forced draft of
air entering at 317 ºK and wet-bulb temperature of 299 ºK. Measurements
indicate that the air leaves at 309 ºK with a wet-bulb temperature of 308 K. The
plant manager wishes to cool the water to as cold a temperature as possible.
One possibility is to increase the air flow rate, and it is found that the fan speed
can be increased without overloading of the motor so that the airflow is 1.5
times that previously used. Tower flooding will not occur at this higher gas
rate. Previous experience with the type of packing use leads the plant engineer
to predict that Kya is proportional to Gs’0.8. Assuming that the cooling load
remains the same, what will be the outlet temperature attained with the higher
airflow rate?
Resp 303.6 ºK

saturado a 15ºC.
