Hardware Overview

The well known LIM building block, which was a combination of one call control element (LIM-processor or Telephony Server) controlling its own dedicated hardware has changed significantly.

MX-ONE V.4.0 is built with Telephony Servers using the distributed architecture for call control but using the capability of the IP network to allow software based control of several entities. Each of these Telephony Servers can now control up to 15 Media Gateways. For this reason, the term LIM is no longer applicable and will be gradually removed from all documentation. Therefore, the term LIM will be still referred to in this and other parts of the V.4.0 documentation.

This terminology change does not in any way impact the system ability to support existing configurations.

1. 5 Media Gateways

There are six different types of media gateways:

CJ EMG (not for new sales)

CJ Compact SM (not for new sales)

CJ Media Gateway Classic Stackable (with LSU-E) CJ Media Gateway Classic (with LSU-E)

CJ MX-ONE Classic (with MGU)

CJ MX-ONE Lite (with MGU)

The EMG (introduced in MX-ONE version 1) and the MX-ONE Classic (introduced in MX-ONE version 2) don't have a storage media like a hard disk. Because of this, they need an NFS exported root file system to boot from.

The NFS exported root file system is stored on the Telephony Server of that Media Gateway (in /eri_egx_root/nfs_root).

Only a small linux kernel and some files needed by this kernel and of course the communication parameters to connect to the NFS server where the root file system is located on reside on a in build flash memory to initiate the boot process. The OS of these two media gateways is Monte Vista Linux.

The new Media Gateway Unit (MGU) introduced in MX-ONE version 4 has a locally installed Linux (Wind River Linux) on a 512 MB flash memory.

1.5.1 EMG

The EMG is an Aastra proprietary hardware with the following specifications:

CJ 2 LAN ports

CJ 1 serial port (V24)

CJ 4 ports for analog extensions CJ 8 ports for E1/T1 connections CJ 96 GW resources

Figure 4: Media Gateway (MG)

The Media Gateway is implemented by running a proprietary application on the operating system Monta Vista Linux.

Note! This product is still supported but is not available for new sales.

1.5.2 Compact Server Media Gateway

The Compact SM (Server Media Gateway) is composed of an ESU board and EMG installed in a 2U 19-inch box. The box has built-in cooling fans. The hardware can be installed in a standard 19-inch rack.

1.5.3

Media Gateway Classic / Media Gateway Classic Stackable

The Media Gateway Classic consists of two components, the LSU-E handling the TOM-switch (together with OSU) plus the signaling towards the Telephony server and one or more IPLUs is used for media handling.

1.5.4 Media Gateway Unit (MGU)

The MGU, introduced in MX-ONE vA is a media gateway unit that interfaces the IP traffic (media) with external trunk traffic but as well contains a TOM switch and is the main communication interface between the legacy HW and the Telephony server SW.

The MGU supports:

o 2 LAN ports

o 1 serial port (V24) (Connector on the board i.e. no front connector)

o 1 USB connector

o 8 ports for El connections

o 256 GW resources

Figure 6: MGU board

The switch function is built on TOM technology and it supports all the functions of the current LSU-E and OSU's so that existing device boards can be reused together with the MGU.

In the 19-inch sub-rack the MGU board replaces the OSU <-> LSU-E <-> OSU combination.

LZU 103 1013 Rev B

Hardware Overview

Note! Only one 7U-subrack is supported by each MGU.

The functionality of MGU is similar to the EMG and most of the requirements can be recognized from the EMG with the additions and changes that is designed to eliminate some restrictions of the older EMG and LSU-E.

While the other media gateway types have one dedicated port for signaling, LAN 1 (ethO) on EMG and LSU-E (Media Gateway Classic), and one dedicated port for media, LAN 2 (eth1) on EMG and IPLU (Media Gateway Classic), both LAN ports (LAN 0 and LAN 1) of the MGU support signaling and media at the same time. This is achieved by configuring two IP addresses for each LAN port.

DTMF sender/receiver, multi-party conference bridge, recorded voice announcement are though not supported today by MGU. These functions are planned for future releases of MX-ONE

The ESU is used to serve one MGU. A Standard Server (more powerful) is needed, though, for serving 2-15 media gateway units.

However, there exists one special case when the ESU is allowed to connect to 2 different MGU, that case is for migrating customer that wants to keep existing LBP22 sub rack and utilize the advantages of the MGU. Please note that the maximum number of users connected to an ESU must never exceed 900 users.

New functionality with MGU:

o Full media redundancy (not possible with LSU-E)

o Full encryption support (not possible with EMG)

o Support for T.38 fax (not possible with EM G)

o Increased capacity (up to 256 GW channels compared with EMG's 96 GW channels)

o Platform for future features/functions (new codecs (e.g. G722.2, RT-A, ... ), Video ... )

Q Netwise Operator Workstation - Contact Management Suite (CMG) client

1.6.2 Compact Server Media Gateway

The Compact SM (Server Media Gateway) is composed of an ESU board and Media Gateway installed in a 2U 19-inch box. The box has built-in cooling fans. The hardware can be installed in a standard 19-inch rack.

Figure 7 shows the front view of the Compact SM. The upper row of interfaces is the same as those on the ESU board. From the left, the interfaces are:

Q Monitor.

Q RJ45 LAN x 2. Q RS232.

Q USB x 2 for connection of keyboard or external storage devices. Q -48V DC power input.

The bottom row of interfaces is the same as those on the Media Gateway. From the left, the interfaces are:

Q RS232.

Q RJ45 LAN x 2.

Q 4 analog extension ports. Q 8 El/Tl ports.

In addition to the standard ESU and Media Gateway interfaces there are two reset "holes" - one for the ESU and one for the Media Gateway.

The ESU reset is located to the right of the USB interfaces and is annotated with a switch symbol. The reset reboots the server.

The Media Gateway reset is located to the right of the -48V DC power interface. There is no symbol. The reset recycles power to the Media Gateway.

The compact SM can be powered from the 220-240VAC mains through the back of the unit or via the front interface using a -48V DC power supply.

1.6.3

MX-ONE Lite

The MX-ONE Lite is a subrack with 5 board slots, with power supply (on right side) and cooling fans (on left side). The lowest board position is dedicated for the Media Gateway Unit (MGU). The other board slots can be freely used.

However, a TMU board is mandatory to use in MX-ONE VA.O release. The 3 remaining board positions can be freely used for e.g. ESU together with for example for 1 ELU33 or ELU34. Another option is to use the MX-ONE server instead of ESU and thus make it possible to utilize the 3 board positions for tru n ks/ extensions.

The functions supported by the MX-ONE Lite include:

o Digital trunks (ISDN BRA, ISDN over El/Tl, DPNSS over El/Tl, CAS

over El/Tl)

o Analog trunk for loop and ground start

o Analog, digital, ISDN, DECT and IP extensions

o IP networking

o Legacy OPIs and region specific standards such as Chinese SS7 IP extensions are connected to the LAN and handled by the MGU.

1.6.4

The Media Gateway Classic (LSU-E)

In the Media Gateway Classic the Telephone Server can be embedded on a board - the Embedded Server Unit (ESU).

The Media Gateway Classic is composed of one or two 7U 19-inch subracks with LSU-E and DSU together with a number of boards for the different functions and interfaces. Each subrack contains two magazines.

The subracks draw power from their own -48V power unit.

A mandatory fan unit must be installed above the top subrack to ensure that the magazines are properly cooled. The fan unit is powered by the subrack power unit. Two subracks can be cooled with one fan unit. The power unit in the second subrack can be used as a redundant power supply for the fan unit.
