PATRICK WAYNE VALLEY FIELD
One of the nation's most modern track and field facilities is Patrick Wayne
Valley Field, which was dedicated March 30, 1974. The facility includes the
first international track (400 meters) to have been built in the United
States. The track itself is a Chevron 440 surface, possibly the most resilient
surface ever produced. The entire layout of Patrick Wayne Valley Field is one
of the nation's most imaginative and modern in terms of surface and provision
for electronic aids. The track was named in the memory of Patrick Wayne
Valley, a former student-athlete who died in 1969. His father, Wayne Valley,
was also an Oregon State graduate who made numerous contributions to the OSU
athletic program. Wayne Valley was a highly successful businessman in the San
Francisco Bay Area. At one time he was the principal owner of the Oakland
Raiders of the NFL. Patrick Wayne Valley was a lineman on the OSU football
team from 1964 to 1966 and a member of the 1964 Rose Bowl squad. He died in a
drowning accident in 1969. Wayne Valley passed away in 1986.

OSU NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS IN 1961

Oregon State, led by All-America Dale Story, captured its first,

and so far only, NCAA championship by winning the NCAA crown in cross country
in 1961.
On that winning team was Story, Rich Cuddihy, Bill Boyd, Cliff
Thompson and Jerry Brady. Sam Bell, now at Indiana, was the head coach of
the national champions for the Beavers.
Story, a former national high school mile record holder from
Orange, Ca., who had transferred to OStJ in the Fall of 1961 from Santa Ana
Junior College as only a sophomore, won the individual championship with a time
of 19:46.6 over the four-mile course at Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.
He outdistanced his nearest competitor by 11 seconds.
Other OSU placers were Cuddihy, 12th; Boyd, 16th; Thompson, 25th
and Brady, 51st. Story's split times were 10:04.4 at the two-mile mark and
14:53.0 at the three-mile mark.
