Abstract:
The ever increasing vehicle-population has had its impact on the traffic-control systems.
Initially, authorities would appoint traffic wardens to the signals to avoid accidents and traffic
violations. As it turns out, appointing a traffic warden for every signal in the city may not be
feasible. Perhaps, this calls for modern methods of traffic control. Our project provides a
solution to this problem by creating an automated traffic signal (although implemented before
too) that sets on for a fixed duration and also takes in account the condition of traffic overflow.
Moreover, it also provides a mechanism for check and balance of traffic violations at an
intersection.

Scope of Work:
Intelligent Traffic Light Controller is a completely automated system for controlling
traffic flow at an intersection. The basic purpose of this controller is to direct the traffic flow
from one direction at any given time by providing a green light signal and stopping the traffic
from other three directions through a red light signal. After a specific interval of time, controller
shifts the green light signal to another direction and the cycle continues.

What makes this controller intelligent is the fact that it can automatically sense the
traffic density at any side and relieve the traffic pressure by prolonging the period of green
signal for that direction. Another feature of the controller is that it will sound an alarm
whenever a car crosses a red signal illegally hence alerting the relevant authorities.

The circuit is based on sequential logic based on the fact that memory elements like
counters are used for calculating traffic density etc.

Infrared sensors further connected to the counters detect the traffic density in a lane
and the main control takes appropriate action based on the signal sent by the counters.

Another infrared sensor at the front of every lane ensures that no one crosses the signal
illegally by sounding an alarm.
