Romania is located in southeastern Europe, bordering the Black sea, between Bulgaria

and Ukraine, for it is slightly smaller than the state of Oregon and a population of twenty-one

million. The climate is cold, cloudy winters with frequent snow and fog; summers are filled with

frequent showers and thunderstorms. Romania joined the EU in 200, beginning the transition

from communism since 1989 because of an unsuited pattern to the country’s needs. Domestic

consumption and investment have fueled strong GDP growth in recent years, but have lead to

large current account imbalances. Drastic austerity measures, as part of Romania’s IMF-led

agreement led to further 1.9% GDP contraction in 2010, but the economy is expected to return to

positive growth in 2011.
