PROJECT DESCRIPTION: THE CHALLENGE OF HIS PROJECT IS TO IMAGINE THE 3-DIMENSIONAL IMPLICATIONS AND
POSSIBILITIES OF A 2-DIMENSTIONAL DESIGN. THE GOAL
IS TO GENERATE, DEVELOP. AND EVALUATE CREATIVITY USING THE ARRANGEMENT AND ADD.ITION OF THE FUNDEMENTAL SHAPES CREATED IN A PAST DRAWING EXPLORATION BY DESIGNING AN OUTDOOR SPADE FORMED FROM SIMPLE GEOMET,RY AND 2-DIMENSIONAL LlNEWORK.

PROGRAM: design an architectural folly characterized by three distinct spaces, each with an increasing degree of enclosure and complexity, governed by a set of proportional systems for design elements and a standard "kit of parts", to express a defined concept.
SITE: 56'x96' site area containing a 36'x84' buildab.le area, with existing
SOUTH to NORTH walkway. site is
located within a larger park setting.
CONCEPT: define structure and enclosure representing a "JOURNEY OF REFLECTION" by means of a curved, travelled path winding through a series of spaces surrounded by an increasing amount of turns and elements, eventually looking back over the entire passage.

GIVEN TASK. COUPLED WITH RESEA.RCH AND
ANALYSIS, I WAS TO DEVELOP AN ABSTRACT REPRESENTATION OF ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTS, AND FABRICATE A SCULPTURAL MODEL THROUGH THE USE OF A MOLDABLE MATE,RIAL, A T,RANSPARENT MATERIAL, WOOD, METAL, AND ANY OTHER APPROVED
SUBSTANCE. THE DESIGN OF THE MODEL'S
STRUCTURE RESPONDS TO THE NATURE OF THE CONSTRUCTED MATERIALS, CLEARLY AND CONCISELY COMMUNICATING THE ORIGINAL CONCEPTS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL PRECEDENT.

ASSIGNED BU ILDING: KOSHINO HOUSE, 1979-81, TADAO ANDO
DESI.GN CONCEPTS: THIS ABSTRACT MODEL OF ANDO'S KOSHINO HOUSE REPRESENTS HIS USE OF FORM AND FUNCTION, DISTILLED DOWN TO THEIR BASIC ELEMENTS. HE ALLOWS LIGHT - OR LACK THEREOF - TO DICTATE AND DEFINE THE MOOD AND FEELING ASSOCIATED WITH A SPACE, AT TIMES PERMITTING THE NATURAL ELEMENTS TO SEEMINGLY FLOW THROUGH THE HABITAT, CREATING A SENSE OF UNITY WITH THE SURROUNDING WORLD. HE RELIES ON THE TRUE ESSENCE OF CONCEPT TO CREATE BEAUTY, WHICH CONSISTS OF A DIALOGUE BETWEEN HIS GEOMETRY, AN APPRECIATION OF NATURE, AND THE PLAY OF LIGHT.
MATER IALS:. THE BLONDEWOOD BASE SIGNIFIES THE QUALITY MATERIALS USED IN ANDO'S WORK, WHILE THE CONCRETE WAS FORMED AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE ON ALL BUT THE EXTERIOR SIDES, 'REPRESENTING THE BARRILR BETWEEN PEACE (INSIDE) AND CHAOS
(OUTS.IDE). THE FORMS ARE SPACED TO ALLOW THE SUNLIGHT TO
CREATE THE SHADOWS SHOWN, AND THE GLASS .RODS WERE TO SYMBOLIZE PENETRATING LIGHT THROUGH THE OFFSET GLASS PANELS,
COMMUNICATING THE SIMPLE GEOMET.RY OF THE SITE. THE SOIL SHOWS
THE SECLUSION, YET INCORPORATION OF NATURE IN THE DESIGN.

what causes on awkward feeling inside a space? the movement of path, the tilting of walls, the slope of a ceiling ...
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: to research and understand the work of a precedent architect and pavilion, and to convey the ideas and concepts behind fhe work. prepare a 20"x20" presentation board including scal.ed drawings, perspective analysis, and a 3-dimensional concept model
DESIGN REASONING AND SOLUTION: fhe appearance of permanence (buildings are solid: they are made of concrete, steel, brick, etc.) is increasingly challenged by the immaterial representation of abstract systems. insteod of an enclosed ond private space Tschumi proposed its opposite: a 9 I ass vi d eo 9 a II ery os ani n c lin ed, t ra n spo re n t g I ass structu re. th ro ug h th is
t ra 11 spa re n C yon d dis to d ion, the p e rs 011 who is vie win g the vi de 0 9 a II e ry is a I so
viewed by the public. the oblique floor further challenges all perceptions of
spatial stability. at night, the endless reflections of the video screens over the
vertical glass surfaces reverse all the expectations of what is architecture and what is event, of what is wall and what i si mag e I of what defines and what activates.

PROGRAM: deve.lop an arts pavilion set in downtown Chicago's Grant Park area containing a small cafe with a variety of seat (indoor, outdoor, private, etc.), an exhibition space for both mounted and sculptural art, a small performance area, and an outdoor courtyard, as well as rest
rooms, storage, and transition spaces. design a set of
programs whose experience of space is created by fhe composition of architectural elements.
SITE: locafed Oil the northern end of Grant Pork, Daley Bicentennial Plaza is located just off Gehry's serpentine BP
Bridge. the site is on opportunity to continue the
atmosphere of public art and nodes of activities that has made Millennium Pork a success.
PROCESS: express design through concept statements and study mo del s which explore possible programmatic layouts and arrangements, and begin to develop the ideas, goals,
and aspirations of this particular project. begin to
understand and experience the arising issues of a long-term design project and continually produce new ideas and solutions to the design challenges.

CONCEPT STATEMENT: THE CONCEPT FOR THIS DESIGN STEMS FROM THE IMAGES OF A REGATTA, WITH SAILS MINGLING AND CROSSING, INTERACTING
WITH THE WIND AND WAT[,R. AS SUCH,
THE PAVILION'S STRUCTURE IS DERIVED FROM THE AUGMENTATION OF THE SAIL FORM IN ORDER TO DICTATE FLOW AND PERCEPTION THROUGHOUT TH.E DESIGN. ROOF FORMS AND CURVED WALLS INSTILL A REMINDER OF THE REPETITION OF A WAVES MOVEMENT, WHILE THE DEGREES OF EXPOSURE FOR EACH PROGRAM AID IN THE DEFINITION OF ITS PURPOSE AND FEEL.

concept, materiality, constructability, and assembly relating directly back to the pavilion's design.

STRUCTURAL STABILITY
ARCH 2230 ~ 2 week project 21
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: (GROUP PROJECT) design and construct a structure to
support the gravity load supplied by three individuals standing upon the
fabricated platform, as well as applied lateral/rotational loads. the purpose IS
to be able to think creatively about the means required to give the form stability and to be able to visually demonstrate the consequences when those elements are removed.
PROCESS AND APPROACH: the use of triangulation across the structural members
allows for maximum stability across the vertical plane. smaller members connected to
three, lou d-vbe o rinq dowels, helping to increase the overall stability and maximum
weight tolerance of the platform. groove and dowel pin connections create several
forms of moment resisting elements. the design revolved around the notion of using
the smallest members possible, while still keeping in mind a sustainable and recyclable ideology towards materiality
