Place the center 20 stitches on holder.
Knitting the front panels:
• Cast on 2 sts
• Row 1: Kfb, K1. You now have 3
stitches.
• Row 2: Kfb, knit to end of row. You
now have 4 stitches.
• Repeat row 2 twenty-six more times.
You now have 30 stitches.
Turn the work and place a safety pin in
the middle of the triangle on the side
facing you. The pins will be your guide to
constructing the kimono.
SHAPING WITH INCREASES & DECREASES
• *Row 1: Kfb, K2 tog, turn.
• Row 2: and all even-numbered rows:
Knit
• Row 3: Kfb, K1, K2 tog, turn.
• Row 5: Kfb, K2, K2 tog, turn.
• Row 7: Kfb, K3, K2 tog, turn.
• Continue in this manner, working 1
more stitch before the decrease on
every odd-numbered row until all
stitches have been worked. The last
row will be kfb, K27, K2 tog, turn.
• Do not work a knit row after this last
pattern row.**
• Repeat from * to ** once more.
SHAPING THE SHOULDERS
Next Row: K2 tog, knit to end of row.
Repeat this row until 2 stitches remain.
K 2 tog and pull yarn through last loop.
Panel measures approximately 10 ½
inches/26.5 cm.
Make a second front panel the same as
the first.
Knitting the Back
Cast on 60 stitches. Work even in garter
stitch until piece measures 1”/2.5 cm
less that front panels (approximately 9
½”/24 cm).
Working the right and left back
separately, work even for 1”/2.5 cm.
JOINING THE SHOULDERS
Note: The right front has a safety pin on
the right side, and the left front has a
safety pin on the wrong side.
With right sides together, sew front to
back at shoulders.
Knitting the Sleeves
Place markers for the underarm 4”/10 cm
from shoulder seam on fronts and back
at side seam. With right side facing and
beginning at underarm, pick up and knit
(see page 280) 22 stitches from shoulder
to seam to other marker. Work even in
garter stitch until sleeve measures 3”/7.5
cm. Bind off. Repeat for second sleeve.
Sew fronts and back together along the
side and underarm seams.
Knitting the Front Band
With right side facing and beginning at
bottom right front, pick up and knit 45
stitches to shoulder seam and 4 stitches
from shoulder seam to back neck, K20
from holder, pickup and knit 4 stitches to
shoulder seam and 45 stitches from
shoulder seam to bottom left front. You
now have 118 stitches.
Work even in garter stitch for 2”/5 cm,
ending with a right-side row. Bind off
loosely in knit.
