Lenten Song

Through forty days of fast and praise,

A month and ten days long
No sacrifice compares with Christ!
We sing our Lenten song!

We sing a tale of justice failed 5

A tale of tears and blood
Of a single tree on calvary
Made more of love than wood

Where on in gloom there hung the groom;

The Son, the righteous king; 10
Whoʼs ministry of hope set free
Did not one evil thing.

With parables and miracles,

For near one thousand days,
He brought men light and gave them life, 15
But they took His away.

With sneers and scowls they pierced his brow,

They lashed his back with thongs,
With nail-pierced limbs they hangèd Him,
Appeasing evil throngs.

Tears and sweat and blood did drip 25

For almost half a day.
People jeered and lost ones sneered;
Jehovah looked away.

With searing pain his arms did strain;

He drew his final breath. 30
He shouted: “It is finishèd!”
And gave himself to death.

And there he hung with piercèd lung;

His flesh, it hung in strips.
His loved ones cried and wondered why
His work would end like this. 40

And so the longest day began,

no shadow since eʼre longer ran,
His sheep but doom surmising;
Some fled, some wept, some felt disdain,
some went back to their boats and grain, 45
Their faith was compromising.

Until one morning with the sun,

two women found the tomb undone!
A thing, Oh most surprising!
Imagine if you can the noise! 50
when crying turned to shouts of joys!
When they heard of his rising!

Hallelujah is the song we sing all Lenten season long;

We celebrate the day
When death did die, Christ was risen,
All our sin was then forgiven, 60
We have a home secure in heaven,
the holy ghost is in us living,
